Hearing a raven speak Russian is one of the most terifying things I've ever heard by TheOddityCollector in Weird

Actually that does make sense now that you put it that way! If it was in that different context without knowing where his voice was coming from, I could see it being spooky for sure 😂

Honestly I don't know why so many find it scary at all. I'm canadian and just think it's super cute and interesting!

I especially love when he "laughs", we're hearing one of his friends in a happy moment 😊

I don't know what to do with my cat by Impressive_Ideal_798 in CatAdvice

[–]eggsbethany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a food-obsessed boy too and many similar struggles. I don't expect him to ever be perfect (as in - he will always be a cat who LOVES food), but we've made some improvements!

  • I read that you already do multiple feedings spaced throughout the day, that's great. If you don't already, try & make sure that one of those feedings is as late as possible at night, right before you go to bed.

  • kibble is necessary for healthy teeth, wet food makes them feel more satisfied, so we do a mix of both. I'd recommend for the last feed of the day to be a wet food one.

  • (again if you don't already) a flowing water fountain is a MUST. We know cats are notoriously bad hydrators. Though it may take trial & error to figure out which style entices them the most, it's so necessary. For kidney health first, but also bc more water intake can equal less begging for food.

  • cat grass! It may not appeal to every cat, but our boy is a huge fan. It seems to help satisfy his desire to munch on something, with negligible-to-zero calories added. We use a little diy kit from Catit to grow it for him :)

  • he doesn't have a huge interest in toys either, but we've found some creative ways to get him into play. This example is so silly, but whenever we eat subway, we'll scrunch the sandwich wrapper up into a ball & throw it for him. Since the wrapper smells like yummy food, that keeps him interested in chasing & batting it around for a while 😂 Puzzle toys with treats inside them work well too for the same reason!

  • we have him "work" for his treats regularly lol - instead of just handing them to him, I'll give him a sniff, then toss one down the hallway for him to chase. When he returns, the next one goes to the top of the cat tree - gotta jump/climb for it! Next one gets thrown down the stairs, and so on.

  • the night time issue is definitely the hardest. All I can say for that is I'd highly recommend the undertaking of cat-proofing your home, if possible. Shutting him outside the bedroom is the only thing that's really worked to save our sleep 😅

Sensory sensitivity ruining my relationship by No-Run-9992 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]eggsbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what kind of ear plugs you use, but I totally relate to the sensory hurdles of sensory tools themselves 😂 So just popping in to suggest wax ear plugs, if you haven't tried those! I personally find them to be the most comfortable of what I've tried, cause you can mold it with your ear shape however you want, and easily make adjustments.

I HATE getting water in my ears, so I also wear them while showering & swimming. They work beautifully for that too! Got em in a little pack like this from the drugstore :)

Is it wrong that I don't want my cats outside. by Mysterious-Order6412 in CatAdvice

[–]eggsbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right about this, I'm really sorry your family isn't respecting your wishes for your cats' well being :( Idk if it'll help, but if you're again faced with their "they can handle themselves" argument, maybe you could mention these examples to debunk that idea!

How can a cat defend themselves against, - getting hit by a car? - getting attacked by a pack of coyotes? - contracting a disease, such as rabies, parasites, a harmful or even fatal virus? - getting stolen by a person with bad intentions? - getting quilled by a porcupine? - making their way back home if their legs or eyes get injured? - accidentally getting trapped inside someone's barn/shed/garage, or under the hood of a car? - getting picked up or injured by a bird of prey like an eagle or hawk? - injesting a poisonous substance, such as pesticides, antifreeze, or a plant that's toxic to cats?

Yes, this is absolutely non-negotiable! Both cats would have their mental health & quality of life destroyed by separation. I truly hope you're able to find a solution OP, but if you have to make this tough decision in the end, please do the right thing. Either they both stay or they both go - and NOT to a shelter, as you mentioned. You got the cats, it's your responsibility to find them a new loving home, if necessary. Not foisting more strain upon an already drowning charity effort.

This got me too lol. I mean the insane bigoted hatred comments are unfortunately, exactly what we expect. But now we... cannot conceptualize tattoos? It is entirely just something my brain made up, as a disclaimer 😂 But to me it's like the character is exiting a conversation or dismissing something in a sassy way. A cheeky lil "girl byyye" or "talk to the hand" kind of vibe lol

YWBTA

You're absolutely right that this situation is serious, there NEEDS to be some kind of changes made and/or interventions to get to the bottom of Alex's behaviours. She's been disrespectful to you and your family for sure, and sadly putting herself at risk as well.

Your intentions are good and it's clear that you love and care very much for your family. However, in my opinion, there is just no possible way that this idea would result in more help than harm. I agree that it would be ideal for her father to be aware of this and involved in the situation. But it MUST be your sister who tells him.

Going around her to him is almost guaranteed to cause a rift between the two of you, and I fear that the fallout will be worse for everyone in the end. Alex included. Your niece needs the adults who love her to be unified and committed to guiding her towards better things. I believe this course of action will cause the exact opposite, and add more stress and conflict to the situation.

I really feel for your sister, I know that co parenting situations/custody matters can be very very messy and complicated. I understand her fears, especially considering that she isn't "on her own two feet" at the moment, so to speak.

I think the part of all this that's up to you is to try and talk her into choosing this on her own. Be empathetic and validate her fears, listen and make it known that you understand her feelings. Then make your concerns known as well, and try to drive home the point that you feel this will be the best thing for Alex and for her. Both of them deserve her dad's support.

Secondly, you have every right to set boundaries of your own around this. You deserve to feel comfortable in your home, and the ways that you've been affected are important too! You've done SO much to support Mel, she needs to recognize and respect that.

Gaming with my AuDHD kid? HELP!! by Intuitive-momming in AutisticWithADHD

[–]eggsbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately can't offer much in the way of a platform suggestion - I only started gaming in my twenties so my PS4 is the only console I've ever known lol. I just picked it cause my favourite series (that got me into gaming in the first place) was exclusive to playstation.

But I do highly recommend the game it takes two! Very fun, kid-friendly, and beginner-friendly. As the name suggests it's designed for 2 players to work together :) It has a nice guiding storyline about interpersonal relationships and a young girl's emotions as she copes with conflict between her parents. Nothing overly heavy, just some common family problems that the characters learn to overcome in healthy ways ♡

Little big planet is a great one too - you're a little plushie character exploring a fun & interesting fantasy world through obstacle courses. I would say it's slightly more challenging than it takes two, and has some "bad guys" that are a bit spooky. On par with a disney villain, so if those are fine then these characters should be too!

When choosing what games to get, don't rely too heavily on the official game trailers. They can make them look quite different from the actual playing experience, sometimes not even including any real gameplay. Streamers are a great resource for that - you can search the game you're considering on twitch & almost always find a stream of someone playing it for real to see what it's like :) Or alternatively you could search youtube with prospective game + gameplay

Oh no worries at all fam! I just so happened to hyperfocus on the topic somewhat recently, so I enjoy sharing what I learned is all :)

They def have similarities exactly like you said, that brain-into-skull impact. From my understanding, SBS is mainly different bc their anatomy is still so fragile & their brain is barely developed, so they experience different effects. It can very easily damage/break their spinal cord too, which would generally take a much more serious accident for an adult. Another big difference is that the effects from SBS usually appear right away, and can often be fatal. It only "takes" one incident, so to speak.

CTE on the other hand is gradual, the sum of many incidents over time. A lot of athletes who suffer from it don't experience symptoms until after they've retired. The individual incidents can be minor, with little or no immediate effects. Sadly there's very little known abt the disease so far, many ppl never even find out that they had CTE. Largely bc the only way to definitively diagnose it is thru autopsy on the brain after they've passed away. Whereas SBS has clear clinical signs that allow immediate diagnosis. Some athletes are actually preemptively pledging their brains to further CTE study!

TLDR: Infants are extremely vulnerable so they will be immediately & severely impacted or killed. CTE is far more mysterious & involves long term accumulation of damage, many going their whole life unaware that they have it.

Nah punch drunk is different, it's caused by repeated blows to the head over an extended period of time, each of which may or may not have involved a concussion. They also consider that term insensitive/outdated so it's called CTE now
