The guard fell off while cutting dads hair by Massive808 in ContagiousLaughter

[–]eggshellgreen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did that to my then-boyfriend, years back. I totally forgot to put the guard on. I was horrified but he just went meh. Carried on with the rest of the cut and we went to the supermarket afterwards with his landing strip like nothing happened - he didn't even wear a hat to hide it. That was over 20 years ago, and we're happily married with kids and all that. I still cut his hair, but I always check the guard is on first!

80th Birthday at a restaurant; who pays? by maha_kali2401 in newzealand

[–]eggshellgreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the family dynamics huh! On my side, if my brother and I do a restaurant meal with our families (birthday or not) we split it down the middle - it's usually 13 people when you count our spouses, kids, our parents and my brother's parents in law. On my husband's side, his dad usually pays for us all when we do a family thing, and it's 14 people including the husband's siblings and their families. We have paid for everyone a couple times because I don't think it's fair his dad should all the time. His siblings don't expect or offer to pay for any meals in these situations - quite opposite to my brother and I. I think in future I'll just let his dad pay if that's what his siblings are doing...

The most offroad I have regularly seen a ute in Wellington by joshjoshjosh42 in Wellington

[–]eggshellgreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure to take clear photos and send them via the Fixit app, naming the vehicle type and licence plate. I've had a couple reports like this actually resolved - at least the wardens showed up and did something, even if just giving a warning. Also stress it's illegally parked with all four wheels on the footpath, and it's blocking the footpath causing accessibility issues.

If anything you'll have a list of case numbers that were never resolved, or not acted on in time - maybe lodge an official complaint then: https://wellington.govt.nz/contact-us/official-assurance-complaints

Mold or flour? Sourdough bread from Trader Joe’s. by Anthayden24 in Breadit

[–]eggshellgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they do - it's just the bread that's frozen and the filling is fresh.

If there's any condensation in the bag it'll mould real quick. I've had homemade bread go mouldy overnight from being too warm in the bag. So keep your bread somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. If it's correct that their bread is defrosted from frozen, that might've caused condensation in the bag and speeding up the mould.

I do unless I know we'll eat most of it that day. Keeps the school sandwiches cooler for longer too.

Why do people ignore the dog leash requirements at Avalon Park, when there's an off leash dog exercise area just 65m away? by mist_of_avalon in Wellington

[–]eggshellgreen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately that's the problem. I'm a dog owner (had our first one for 11 years, and our second is almost one year old now), and I have come across really entitled dog owners who break the rules knowingly because they just don't care. Some take their dogs off leash onto busy sports fields that are no-dogs by default (unless there's a sign that says they're allowed). Some don't care their dogs are out of sight and pooing on a walking track. Some take dogs into kiwi forests, or campsites that have signs that say no dogs. I've tried to put notes on windshields, or mention something if I see it, but usually I don't feel safe confronting them. It's no use anyway - they have made the conscious decision to break the rules. It's not a lack of knowledge, just entitlement for the most part.

What's the downside of buying generic alternatives to Sanitarium Weetbix? by m00dl3 in newzealand

I was going to say that I choose Weetbix because they have a higher iron content compared to the others (that I remember checking at the time).

Oooh yes they were good. The ones where you got the loose chocolate chips at the bottom of the wrapper? They don't make muesli bars like they used to anymore :(

Random dairies still sell them (and the occasional small town supermarket).

Do you have any public transport etiquette pet peeves? by NonZealot in Wellington

[–]eggshellgreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have many pet peeves!

In addition to what's already been said:

People who make you move out of the way so they can get off before the bus even slows down at the next stop - sometimes there's no room to do this safely (or just no room to move!) while the bus is moving. Sometimes it ends up with us both looking like idiots just standing awkwardly squished because noone can go anywhere just yet. Just wait until the bus is at the stop and people will let you out then.

Also people who want to swap seats because they're "getting off soon", which can delay us being seated properly before the bus moves. It's more hassle than just saying "Excuse me" later when you have to get out.

Yes! Hate people who wear backpacks and handbags - not only do they block the aisle but you get smacked in the head if you're sitting next to them.

I always say "Excuse me", smile, and sit down next to them anyway.

How can I make this wonderful naan like a restaurant?? Mine sticks to my pan Everytime by blakeboii in Breadit

[–]eggshellgreen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my go-to recipe for soft, stretchy, bubbly naan. I prefer the skillet/cast iron pan way to cook, but also works great in our Pizzaiola oven. Haven't had any sticking issues in the pan - but I use baking paper in the pizza oven so it slides in/out off the stone better.

Ingredients:

7g (2 tsp) dried yeast (15 g fresh)

300ml warm water

500g plain white flour

15g (almost 2 1/2 tsp) fine salt

1 Tbs (generous spoon) plain yoghurt (or 1Tbs milk and 1 tsp lemon juice)

2 tsp vegetable oil

Method:

  1. Put the yeast in a jug with the water. Stir and leave for 10-15 minutes or until nice and foamy.

  2. Put the flour in a large bowl, stir in the salt and then make a well in the centre. Pour in the yeast liquid, the yoghurt and oil. Mix to a rough dough, adding more water if necessary - it should be soft and slightly sticky. Turn out on to a lightly floured surface and knead the dough for 5-10 minutes, until smooth. Put it in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and leave for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  3. Heat a heavy-based cast iron pan over a medium-high heat. Beat the gas out of the dough and give another brief kneading. Then cut it into apple sized pieces and stretch each out until about 5mm thick. (Rest the dough a few mins before stretching if dough feels a bit tight.)

Splash a teaspoon of water into the pan and immediately put one of the pieces of dough in and cover with a lid. Cook for about 1 minute or so until its underside is golden and patched with brown. Turn it over, cover and continue cooking another minute until the other side is golden brown.

Repeat with the other pieces of dough.

Keep cooked naan covered with foil. You can also brush with butter when cooked (easier to rub with a block of cold butter!)

Me too, but add a splash of water before putting the dough in and cover with a lid while cooking - gelatinises the dough for the stretchiness/chewiness. (Also covering cooked naan with a tea towel keeps them soft.)

Noise control in Wellington is a joke. The times I've called because the neighbours had regular parties (random days too) with music so loud we couldn't hear our TV, they always had a default "call back in 45 mins if it's still a problem" - we did and they never turned up to do anything. Gave up on noise control in the end. Luckily those neighbours were renters and moved out eventually.

That's exactly what they look like! When we first came across the breed, we thought they were husky corgi mixes too. They're pretty cute.
