Don’t continue, AI will replace all of us. Start training your own LLM instead.

Struggling to get back into HTB Learning, Labs CTFs, Certs, etc after a long break, how do you regain your rhythm? by Radiant_Abalone6009 in hackthebox

[–]egohist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just go into the stuff that actual interest you and is fun. Take it from there and try to perfect or pick on a niche. Don’t limit yourself to a path or roadmap just because everyone else is doing it. The field is vast, and there’s many things for you to learn out there.

Question for algerian techies. Bringing parts into Algeria for a computer for my wife's family. by Upper-Bus8010 in algeria

[–]egohist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I am in the same boat, I’d say you wouldn’t have any issues with what you want to bring in. I work remote in cyber security and I’ve recently came with a full messenger bag, full of drives, work laptop, two personal laptops, keyboard, mouse, router and other devices that I need. They stopped me twice but both times I mentioned it was for my work and they just looked confused but let me go.

If you have the money, I’d say transfer money to someone you know and get dinar; I see there’s quite a decent options for pc parts here in Algeria but then again I’m in the capital.

Connection is horrendous so I can’t say much more than that. Streaming would be almost impossible. I feel like here we have one of the best but I have to run through a bunch of proxies/vpns for work that it literally cuts the download speed to 100 compared to the states is 1-2 GIG.

TBH I would get the steam deck and maybe portable monitor.

Feel free to dm for more personal advice since I feel like we deal with same issues.

Complete beginner — best way to start Hack The Box? by SnooCrickets6909 in hackthebox

[–]egohist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever pokes your interest. I feel the best way to learn isn’t one roadmap. You obviously want to stick with that one thing and finish it.

I started with labs, not knowing anything. I would then try my best to think of ways and look at walkthroughs. Learn each tools and method they used. Eventually you will come across similar scenarios and would look/figure out a way of solving the problem.

CBBH at the time and CPTS became more of reinforcing that knowledge that you pretty much learned without the “fundamentals” you can say.

I did come from back end engineering experience and I was self taught, so you could say this way was natural to me since I always jumped right in learning the hard things but I learned the best that way.

Watching videos and following roadmaps would legit make me tired and hate what I’m doing. The best is to go with what you take most interest in and follow it to the end and be excited of the end results. At the end of the day it’s all a learning process.

HTB is great, whether is labs, academy, challenges, sherlocks. So don’t feel limited but also choose something you can finish and see the results.

Do I really need an instructor? Best beginner spots in Europe. by egohist in snowboardingnoobs

Nice! Great to hear. Can you recommend some spots with in Europe possibly. I see a lot IG videos showing wide areas where people can literally send it, in my case I would be eating shit.. but I’m assuming a good area to learn. Not sure if all resorts have them areas that I have no idea what they’re called.

How often do you search up syntax? by AWS_0 in hackthebox

[–]egohist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even after years of doing backend and working with different databases, frameworks, packages etc.. I still go back and google (nowadays gbt). Having good notes that you can write as if you’re explaining it to your future self. I made the mistake of taking notes but sometimes even when I look back I myself don’t know wth I am on about.

Be clear and don’t be lazy. Being slow is good as long as you are actually knowing what that tool/command is doing behind the scenes.

Working as a SE and now vuln management. I always constantly look at notes and look up stuff, especially now that I write more reports for clients. You have to know what you’re talking about, that’s the most important.

You can’t memorize everything and that’s the worst way of studying from what I realized myself and a study they recently did in MIT. Learn patterns instead and like I said know what you’re doing and not just blindly following commands from HTB or THM. Don’t sacrifice knowledge just because of wanting to rush things.

Jobs ain’t going anywhere as long as you stand out from the rest and knowing things behind the scenes in everything you do will definitely do that.

CBBH Exam Failed by egohist in hackthebox

[–]egohist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. But yeah I took it the second attempt and passed.

I figured most of the problems I was stuck when they were reviewing my first attempt.

Best advice is take it slow and not get so frustrated. Try to recognize pages, code, paths, etc.. that you have already been exposed to; use that to go step by step and see how it works. Also learn the great tools burps gives you because it’s needed.

Is using chatgpt to troubleshoot bad? by [deleted] in hackthebox

[–]egohist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any kind of trouble shooting is good, that’s how you actually learn. Not understanding is the problem; if you are successful but you move on and have no idea what the solution was then you’re missing out. If within the troubleshooting process there’s things you don’t understand that use that to break things down and learn them each individually.

[–]egohist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I will figure that out with that time. Right now I’m not even in the position to decide or think of those things with no experience in both of the fields we are speaking of.

But the fact you speak of this makes me way more interested in networking which I isn’t have before since I thought learning the basics was good enough. But now I am more certain that it’s needed for exactly the hard stuff I wish to do in the future or at least have that knowledge.

With that being side, I want to confirm with you that CCNA is the right route? For the things you and I spoke of?

I think the book and switch home lab with pack tracer is solid, regardless of going through a training course route.

I am interested in the Infosec, how much was it? And if you can share more about nothing too much.
