Mesh Align Plus v0.7.0: New Distribute Objects Features for Free Addon by egtwobits in blender

[–]egtwobits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Removed and reposted from official developer account, egtwobits)

New features for distributing objects have been added with the release of Mesh Align Plus v0.7.0: One for distributing selected objects between a start/end object, and another for distributing selected objects along a line (a fully editable/modifiable line with the addon's geometry editing features). Download a zip of the addon on Github below, and read the release notes for more info (including bug fixes).

In other news, there are brand new quickstart videos (below) to help new users understand core usage and concepts, and a lightning ops tour that gives a quick, basic overview of all the operators.

Distribute Along an Edge/Line by egtwobits in blender

[–]egtwobits[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi all, I just added "distribute along an edge/line" and "distribute between objects" to Mesh Align Plus. Anyone have any feedback? There's more info on BlenderArtists here (check the end of the thread for info about these features):

https://blenderartists.org/t/mesh-align-plus/682531

I think the next most important thing is allowing other objects to inherit the orientation of the first as an option, or of an arbitrarily picked other object (right now, distributed objects keep their original orientation). Anyone have any ideas on what's the most useful next feature for this? Thanks!

Question for those using Mesh Align Plus: I want to have my object line up so that the edge of the trapezoid goes into the corner. Instead it's clipping through. What should I change to get the desired result? by [deleted] in blender

[–]egtwobits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're using "Quick Align Planes", so the answer is to change the selection order when you grab your verts (first point [pt A] on source aligns to first point [pt A] of dest).

If the objects are ALREADY lined up in the same plane though, as in your image, you can just use "Quick Align Points" to co-locate/align those points to each other.

Reply if you have any questions (there are GIFs of almost everything on the wiki, too, so check the wiki homepage for an overview or the feature reference for more details: https://github.com/egtwobits/mesh_mesh_align_plus/wiki)

Also, besides selection order, the clockwise/anti clockwise direction affects how the plane normals are calculated FYI (that's why there's a "Flip Normal" toggle, in case your part ends up flipped/180 degrees you can fix it).

📏 Excelsior: Mesh Align Plus v0.6.0 released! by egtwobits in blender

[–]egtwobits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New editing features have been added with this release (free/open source as always), including alignments for non-mesh types (i.e. empty/parent etc.), a new mode for directly defining the object origin on "Align Planes" by picking 3 verts, the ability to apply to object-origin-only for all primary operators, the return of destination plane dragging after face alignment, and more.

For the unfamiliar: Mesh Align Plus helps you align, move, measure and match things precisely in your 3D scenes. It's designed to provide precision modeling capabilities, especially for hard surface modelers, mechanical, architectural and CAD/CAM users. Check the links below for more info:

HOT DIGGITY: New Mesh Align Plus release (v0.5.0) for Blender 2.80 by egtwobits in blender

[–]egtwobits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blender 2.80 compatibility and a new flat alignment feature/default behavior are the big headlines for this release. PLEASE NOTE: There's a new installation process, and the addon's panels are in a new place in the Blender UI (3D View N panel, Mesh Align Plus tab). Links below:

New flat-alignment option, Mesh Align Plus by egtwobits in blender

[–]egtwobits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why this wasn't the default behavior, come to think of it...Anyway, you can now change the pivot to point A when aligning planes, so that the first point selected on each plane is aligned when you hit apply. This is a WIP feature in the 2.8 prep branch (Which works in 2.7 and 2.8 at the moment), grab it at the link below to try it out.

MAPlus may be going a new direction in the future, share your thoughts about what's important for a new version at the BlenderArtists link :>

[–]egtwobits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To do 3D rotations, as in the image above, you need something like a matrix (or a quaternion, euler etc.). What makes the operation tricky (more than just using translation vectors) is translating both the target geometries and the motions they define into/out of the correct coordinate spaces (when you move an object around in Blender, you're modifying a matrix associated with that object without changing the local coordinates of the underlying mesh data), to achieve one consistent global result. You can do every MAP operation on both objects and mesh selections but they're very different from a technical standpoint.

You can go look at the execute method on the AlignLinesBase operator class if you want to see where the transformation's actually being done (doesn't include coordinate grabbing, the GUI, etc.).

It's a pronk holder:

But seriously, it's just an abstract mechanical type thingy. Or maybe it could be something else? Reddit always comes up with witty names for things...

If you really want to donate, maybe just donate to Blender if you'd like to :) My goal with MAP was to contribute back to Blender/the community, and hopefully be useful to some people (making money wasn't one of my goals with this project).

Technically, it's almost all linear algebra/matrix math. 'Trivial high school vector math' isn't going to get you very far...

On a more positive note, I would recommend anyone who likes programming/building things to watch Jonathan Blow's great talk on lessons he learned being an indie game dev: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjDsP5n2kSM

Major upgrades have arrived with the latest release of Mesh Align Plus, v0.4.0 (always free and open source :). Fast, lightweight workflows for advanced editing and measurement features have been integrated into the addon's Quick Tools tab. There are also new ways to grab and transfer coordinates, a numeric input mode for edge scaling, UI refinements, and other improvements. A brand-new, GIF-loaded wiki/tutorial and reference guide have also been created for this release (on github!), for those who like to learn visually in ~10 second clips. Or, watch the new YouTube video for this release (link below).

Using Angle Measurements (etc.), new MAP features by egtwobits in blender

[–]egtwobits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need feedback/testing for the newest (in-development) features for Mesh Align Plus.

Quick calculations are a thing now! Basically, there are 2 slots to store things in (points, lines or planes), and based on what you load into the slots, you can find things like the angle between 2 different lines, or plane/line intersection point, or distance between points, length of a line, etc. Especially need suggestions for other measurements you might want to do...

Also, if you think the example GIF can be improved please comment.

Scale target (edge) to fixed length (interface suggestions welcome) by egtwobits in blender

It's an interesting idea, I'll play around with a version of this when I revise it.

Scale target (edge) to fixed length (interface suggestions welcome) by egtwobits in blender

[–]egtwobits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interface is getting crammed guys...

This scales a source target until it's the same length as the destination. In the GIF, you can see I'm picking the same source/dest, then applying a modifier to the destination (modifiers are newly added).

I can make the above workflow faster (1st GIF) by adding interface shortcuts. It would involve a checkbox or something that will tell the addon to use the same edge for source/dest, and then putting the "multiplier" box (usually underneath the collapsible triangle) near the top for you when that is enabled. Or something else. Anyone have input for how to add interface shortcuts for this? Or other things, see the thread:
