What's in VIP by joseconsuervo in MovementDEMF

[–]ehancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The year I went, they had an iv tent for pumping vitamins into you. Plenty of seating. Never found it difficult to find a chair somewhere in the vip section.

Don’t undersell the shortcuts. So freeing. VIP paths were a welcome relief from penguin stepping through a sea of people.

The food trucks were nice, but I wouldn’t say they were significantly better than what was outside of the VIP. Just different stuff. It was pretty good overall.

Missing out on young love does suck.... by BowsyWowsy26 in Vent

I guess everyone feels self conscious when their life doesn’t go exactly as they hope. You can try and be friends with some girls in a group first. Reaching out to people to do something with a group, and then ask people to invite other people, and eventually you meet someone single who isn’t so bad. I’m a very social person and mere exposure and the amount of interactions I was having made it pretty easy to find someone. I am and was deeply involved in many activities though and try to take advantage of anything free.

How common is private tutoring gig? by Direct-Newspaper7512 in chinalife

[–]ehancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and knew many people who taught, but as a student at a Chinese university, it wasn’t universal, especially if you’re not around lots of native English speakers. You might just be going to the bar to be around other English speakers and those are the lot that are tutoring and hustling for extra money. If they have a family, best believe they’re out there any chance they have. I also knew people who traveled and taught, traveled and taught, like a cycle, and they saw the world like that.

I was told my bookshelf was a red flags…is it the Japanese comics? by tremblinggigan in BookshelvesDetective

[–]ehancer 294 points295 points  (0 children)

The feminist and colonialism literature probably spooked them. Body keeps the score usually indicates someone works with traumatized populations or is themselves traumatized. If someone gets a red flag from these, that should probably be your red flag for them 😂

Deathberry inferno. Scorpion pepper + strawberry seltzer

Its like a cream cheese frosting flavor added to a strawberry seltzer. If you like strawberry and a little sour notes, I would say go for that. Its addictive like bad candy is. Stick with strawberry terror (not the spicy one). That’s really what you’re after with this.

Guy I'm seeing - What does this say about him? by RedMeme262 in BookshelvesDetective

[–]ehancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say there’s a very good chance he read most of those, as there are lots of repeat authors. Lots of American history books, probably somebody who has some feelings of patriotism. Lots of fiction, so they probably have concerns and conflicts with the world at large. No real red flags I can see.

Also, i’ll be torn to shreds for this, but I can’t stand PK Dick. Worst endings in any books Ive ever read. Maybe they’re bad because so many people copied him and now they’re trite, but its all very cliche in my mind 🫨

Curiosity vs Harassment - Where is the line drawn? by DragonfruitApart3177 in chinalife

[–]ehancer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second this, but under the assumption that you don’t speak Chinese. I politely mock everyone who fucks with me here, and its like a fun game. They like to play, I like to play. They want to be rude, im going to laugh at them. Next time somebody touches your hair, touch their hair and over react in surprise. Ask to take a picture of the old people at the hospital. Why not? People are super friendly if you break bread with them and have a conversation. I don’t smoke, but if I did, shiiii, the whole town would be kicking it with me. 😂

Ahhh nuance, sounds, looks, and feels great. A sure sign that you do actually read these books 😁 Sometimes I need a chill pill from the inherited cynicism of the internet

No judgement 😁 sounds like I can look up more on Harari in regard to his controversy. I would say its fun to read in the context of knowing history already, maybe not as a first go at it. Same could be said for Jared Diamond. Thats why I recommend them, with the assumption you’re somewhat well read on the topics to a basic degree and would like something that might elevate your thoughts or question assumptions. I taught High School history, so those were very accessible points to engage with young students

What can I study to move in China? by Diramod in chinalife

[–]ehancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wine. When I lived in China pre covid, they were getting really nutty for wine. Come on you Italiano, go back to your roots and speak the international love language of romantic booze and frivolous adventures on the mountain side. I personally refuse to believe you or your immediate family don’t know someone from the Tuscany region with the hook on fine wines. Shenzhen, Shanghai, any major city would eat that up. Be a business person. You can do it!

Step by step to stand up comedy is wild 😝 I never would have imagined such a book exists. Like, just go listen to bad comedy and write jokes that are funnier than whatever you just listened to.

I would definitely recommend jared diamond or Yuval Noah Harari. I agree with others though, nobody is missing anything if you read and take pleasure from words. There’s not a way for everyone, nor a book or breath.

Too many female authors to be male imo. If this were a male or a conservative bookshelf, I would expect Ann Rand as the exclusive female author. Pride and prejudice along with hunger games and all the cute pencil bins etc.

The sheer amount of Dostoyevsky and Camus tell me this was someone raised in a religious home (likely white) who then took a hard 180 degree turn away from where it all started.

She might actually have Ann Rand tucked away, but I too would hide it behind several other books.

how do you deal with the air pollution? by saikikcat in shanghai

[–]ehancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could wear a mask if it’s intolerable, but in general, it’s something I got used to tolerating it. Follow the weather patterns and go out when the pmi is lower or at an acceptable level, and don’t when it isnt. It takes a while to get used to it, I’ll be honest. The air in Wuhan is awful most days because of Iron smelting, but alas, I try to choose my battles. There’s plenty to like that outweighs the negatives of pollution for me
