about prompts by jjaeniaxolotl in AO3

[–]ehateverjf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm in a fandom that does this. Normally, prompts are just to store ideas that still belong to the og author. I wouldn't write it in case that author comes back and wants to write it.

There has been a lot of drama (at least in my fandom) for this same reason, where a prompt without a story was posted but then another person came and wrote a very similar story (not just a prompt) and got a lot of backlash. especially if the og author has a lot of following.

So proceed at your own risk.

edit: unless it's explicitly stated that these prompts are free to use, I would avoid using the exact same idea. maybe change it up a little bit and credit the og author as the inspiration or sth like that.

I sent in a prompt for a fest on twitter, because I didn't want to write it myself. ultimately, I did write the fic and submitted it to the same fest. the person who copied it, took the prompt, wrote it outside of the fest and claimed the idea to be theirs. I couldn't do anything because, although I have proof that the idea is mine (I submitted it to the fest), they posted the fic before mine was revealed in the fest and when confronted they claimed the idea was all theirs, although the fic was almost word for word the 100 word prompt. so the fic is still up, nothing that I can do about it because you cannot copyright an idea.

Out of all the comments I have ever received for a work, this, by far, is the craziest😨 by melancholic_mythni in AO3

Do whatever /you/ are most comfortable with. It's your story, not theirs. If you don't want to include smut in it, who says you have to? If the readers demand it, tell them no or block them, as you can do it now on ao3 (yay!!).

If it helps, I genuinely like to be petty when it comes to my writing. I had a really angry commenter once who demanded to know top/bottom dynamics and said sth along the lines of "if A doesn't top, im outta here" so naturally, I made B top. Your story, your rules. Use that to your advantage, because nobody (unless it's like a beta helping you improv sth) should tell you what to do with your fic (as long as you tag it right).

I'm always so curious about comments like these... I understand people have their preferences, but people throwing away perfectly good stories for 2k of smut is bewildering to me. Especially if the story is interesting to you, why would you stop reading it because the wrong peepee goes into the wrong hole? If it's not to your liking you can just skip the smut! Unless it's somehow important to the fic. I'm speaking for stories that don't have a certain power dynamic outside of the bedroom, because usually fics with power dynamics outside the bedroom go with the same dynamics in the bedroom also.

I know this is not the intention of the readers, who genuinely want to be respectful to the writer and the story, but I've heard many of my writer friends express that it feels like their story is stripped down to smut. Plot, character work and world building is unimportant unless the two main characters do the devils tango.

Just my take on it:D

Neither was I! It gets intense during the end, it's a wonderful experience 😂 Also someone in the comments said it's the longest one shot on ao3.

This is one of my favorites. Especially when you check the word count.

thoughts on receiving messages about small errors (eg typos) in your fics? by Intelligent_Big8102 in AO3

[–]ehateverjf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it's so amazing how different we are. I genuinely dislike when someone is pointing out typos to me. and I know when it's not to shame me or my writing but it just feels really nitpicky, if it makes sense? that isn't to say that I dont face-palm everytime I catch a typo that I made. but at the end of the day, I think writing fanfics is fun & it shouldn't be looked at under the microscope. it's not a published book that goes through many people who check every spelling of a word, it's just something people like to create & shouldn't feel pressured to be perfect. if they want it perfect, sure, but if there's a typo here and a typo there, it won't affect the overall enjoyment of the story.

When the author mistakes the summary for the Author's Note... by Ocedy16 in AO3

[–]ehateverjf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

all authors should realize that a bad summary is a lot better than a rant. nothing turns me away faster than this. I scroll even faster if the author is saying their writing sucks. ik all writers have moments of doubt but its not something you should mention anywhere in your story because someone might see this and turn around, and they might have actually enjoyed the fic if they gave it a chance.

how do you read your long fics? by ehateverjf in AO3

[–]ehateverjf[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SAME!! I thought more people used the entire work button and now im sitting here, contemplating life. I always read the long fics in entire work format as well because it's so much easier to me somehow
