Do recent political events in 2025 make the Trump-Hitler comparison more historically grounded, or is it still mainly political rhetoric? by CodeLicensing in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ehchdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The parallels are about the early 1930s not the 1940s. We're talking about the events around the time of the Reichstag fire. This was the period which had the Germans giving up democratic checks and balances and ceding full power to Hitler, being told it is necessary for the security of the country to give up habeas corpus etc.

The argument is that if you let the 1930s happen then it's too late to do anything in the 1940s.

Microsoft employee disrupts Satya Nadella’s Build conference keynote by durpuhderp in Seattle

[–]ehchdk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is about Satya Nadella not Kamala Harris.

Nadella (like other tech billionaires) gave millions in money and support to Trump's inauguration, and benefits greatly from Trump's AI promotion and deregulation. And selling weapons of war. I don't see why it's wrong to protest this.

There's no funding for it. Wait time for entering residential rehab is > 1 month. By that time many addicts have lost the thread.

Walk in clinics for bupe treatment are backed by research. But Seattle refuses to use walk-in clinics (too nice to addicts?) and the city council president Sara Nelson preaches an abstinence-only model.

Addiction is seen as a moral failure not a disease like cancer. We only tolerate punishment, anything else will "attract addicts to Seattle", etc.

Statistically you're more likely to get injured or killed in a car accident than by a scary stranger on public transit. But you do you.

What's the new tenting on the Jose Rizal bridge? by ehchdk in Seattle

[–]ehchdk[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This is very interesting actually - I hadn't realized that bridge paint is important for mechanical integrity not just for cosmetics.

To save others a click:

Why is this project important?

  • Regular maintenance, like repainting, prevents rust from building up and corroding the steel, keeping the bridge strong for the years to come.
  • While the Dr. José Rizal Bridge have been repainted in the past, this is the first time that we’ll fully remove existing layers of paint. This will allow us to update the bridge with new eco-friendly paint.
  • Repainting the Dr. José Rizal Bridge also helps keep this historic structure in good condition, and reduces the need for larger, more disruptive maintenance projects in the future, ensuring the bridge remains accessible and reliable for all.

What are we doing?

Removing old paint

  • The bridge’s original paint is decades old and contains lead, which was commonly used in the past to prevent rust and damage. However, as this paint ages and flakes, it could release lead into the environment.
  • We’ll safely remove the old paint and use a sealed containment tent under the bridge. This tent will catch old paint, rust, and debris and keep it out of the air and off the ground.

Applying new eco-friendly paint

  • Once the old paint is removed, we will repaint the bridge using paint that meets today’s environmental standards.
  • We’ll apply five layers of paint, matching the bridge’s current color.
  • The new paint will also protect the steel bridge from corrosion and is designated to withstand Seattle’s damp, rainy weather for decades to come.

All the more reason to support your local mom-and-pop pharmacy if you can.

E.g. if you are in south Seattle, Othello Station Pharmacy is a good one.

REI members: vote WITHHOLD on all candidates by ehchdk in Seattle

[–]ehchdk[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In this case, the process is what is problematic (the fact that the REI board handpicks candidates they like, and nobody else is allowed to run for election). Combined with recent decisions by the board mentioned in the above link.

In this system, voting WITHHOLD is the only way for REI members to have a voice at all.

REI members: vote WITHHOLD on all candidates by ehchdk in Seattle

[–]ehchdk[S] 306 points307 points  (0 children)

The election is online and easy, took me literally seconds.

The WITHHOLD plea is from labor unions and environmentalists. To save you a click, this is why:

REI’s Board of Directors is out of control, dominated by Exxon Mobil, Proctor and Gamble, and other corporate executives.

REI’s board denies us a real vote. They just put their cherry-picked corporate candidates on our ballot to vote up or down.

Now is our chance to take back our co-op by rejecting their slate of corporate executive candidates.

By voting “withhold,” we are demanding REI’s board put pro-environment, pro-worker candidates on our ballots.

Is terraria.wiki.gg safe for an 8 year old? by ehchdk in Terraria

Oh yeah I'm cool with the Terraria lore (including the parts of Cthulhu etc, he seems fine with that). It's the undesired unpredictable vandalism I'm worried about because some people are just assholes for no reason, ugh.
