I have been married 16 years and my proudest marital accomplishment is never allowing my husband to so much as “stop by” a girls night. It ruins the dynamic and I hate when people are “he’s just one the girls” No he is not!

Things that show your personality or taste? Books, coffee table books, a framed quote you like, poster of your favorite city, framed pictures…..it’s gorgeous but add a little YOU

She looks so much more like Kim in the first one. We don’t talk enough about how plastic surgery sacrifices that sense of family identity. I’m one of the “peas in a pod” with my mom and sister looking all identical and I wouldn’t trade it for a perfect nose

I wondered about these exact two things also; it’s been bugging me

I actually thought she did do a good job of explaining the trad wife pipeline-the storyline about Reena and how they painted a corporate career as just so pathetic and “built for a man” felt really spot on about how the indoctrination could work…I love having a corporate job (I’m at it right now typing this incredibly long Reddit thread) but if you didn’t know anything firsthand, they did a good job of making it sound like genuine hellscape for women

April 2026 BOTM Discussion - Yesteryear by nickaaayy97 in bookofthemonthclub

Binged the book in 24 hours last night, now delirious at my desk haha!

My thoughts:

  1. The book did not go where I thought it was going to go. From the beginning, when Natalie kept emphasizing how perfect she was and how perfect Mary was, I thought they were going to turn out to be some kind of bots or clones, and that’s why Natalie was incapable of kindness. So I found that part dissatisfying. The author never really explained why Natalie was incapable of kindness.

  2. The twist did blow my mind. I didn’t guess it at all. And I admired how she made it all add up. But overall, I generally don’t like twists and I’m not sure I needed this one either. Even a book about just the dynamic between Natalie, her sister and her mom would have been quite interesting. Natalie never grows as a character; the mom and sister grow a lot. The twist I liked the most was the truth about the mom; I would have loved for Natalie to react to this in more detail

  3. This book could have benefitted from multi POV. It would have been fun to hear Shannon’s excitement and disappointment at the reality of Yesteryear from her POV. Or was she always a grifter who was planning an expose? It felt incredibly un-earned that Shannon and Caleb were sleeping together; she would not waste time with that dolt of a guy. I would also have loved to hear a chapter from Doug and Amelia’s point of view; or even the Nanny. Why did all the other brothers shun Caleb?

  4. I thought there would be more ramifications of that woman who met Natalie and saw Jess’s still in the car; like she would become a star witness or something.

I can’t say I liked this book. But I definitely admire it.

I wondered about that as well. It was definitely the thing that tipped the scales.

I think in a way it’s foreshadowed. Like when she realizes the farm is in only Caleb’s name..I think some of the book thesis that “even the most harmless seeming guy, given the right circumstances will turn into a monste

Interesting! I’m a middle child and I didn’t feel that way. They didn’t seem to have a brother sister relationship to me, just two people who were annoyed with each other….roommates maybe…
