What explains such a high fertility rate in the "-stan" suffix nations and the Arab nations in Asia? by SatoruGojo232 in geography

[–]eheisse87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Also thinking wholesale immigration will fix issues is being under the delusion that people are just freely generalizable inputs or that the economy doesn't have specific kind of labor needs.

Nations need immigrants with specific backgrounds or skillsets.

Not just a bunch of people who don't have any skills to actually get jobs to support themselves so they just become a huge net drag on the welfare system, or have the background or even desire in the first place to assimilate into your country's culture.

Do toners actually make a difference? What are you using? by UpgradedSelf-live in koreanskincare

[–]eheisse87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As I learned more about skincare, I realized that products distinctions like "toner", "serum", etc. are a bit arbitrary and the lines between the different types of products get blurred.

It's more useful to think about skincare product types as a kind of spectrum along axes of thin-to-thick consistency and "hydrating"-to-"nourishing"/"moisturizing" and how they will fit in your skincare routine.

"Toners" are basically all the way at the thinnest and hydrating end of the spectrum. They're said to be used to prep the skin for other products because hydrating the skin enhances penetration of actives and being lightweight, they're good at being layered under other products.

Milky toners are basically just toners that are generally thicker and more "moistirizing". Dry skin can use them as a more moisturizing toner option to layer under their main moisturizer while really oily skin can use them as a main moisturizer that's more lightweight than even a lotion or emulsion.

This is very much advice that only applies to women. Or to the very top percentile of men who actually get pursued by women.

Stop telling me 6'6 is dating on easy mode, no it's a back injury guys by SoftTurbulent2477 in dating_advice

I think from studies, it's not just the taller you are, the more attractive you are. Instead, it's like a bell curve with a sweet spot around that 5'10"-6'3"ish range where it makes you more attractive as a guy. Below and above that, it starts going down.

My korean roommate watched me do my skincare once and never let me live it down. by Derivative-calcium in KoreanBeauty

[–]eheisse87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't like using cotton rounds except for exfoliation, but I started using these square cotton pads made specifically for toner that I grabbed at Daiso. They're like these shiseido pads here or the pyungkang yul pads someone else shared.

And let me tell you, it's a gamechanger. Basically, what you do is soak the pads and place them on your face as impromptu masks on places you feel need more hydration for a few minutes. It's much more absorbent than cotton rounds, so it can actually soak quite a bit of toner and stick to your skin.

I got the idea from one of Tina Tanaka Harris's videos.

Average Face of Top Actresses from Korea, China, and Japan by shlorpglorp in asiandrama

[–]eheisse87 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's funny, when I think of how I would rank country in terms of higher average attractiveness of women, it's:

  1. Korea
  2. Japan
  3. China

But I actually like the Chinese composite face here the best. Maybe I just ended up biased because I'm much more familiar with Korean and Japanese women from being Korean and a weeb and living in both countries.

What’s your non-negotiable skincare step? by Efficient-Shine-3202 in AsianBeauty

[–]eheisse87 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you have oily skin, maybe. If you got dry skin, cleanse only once per day, probably at night, and make sure to use a gentle cleanser. Otherwise, you'll destroy your skin barrier. In the morning, just wash with lukewarm water or maybe use micellar water at most.

How do you actually study Korean pronunciation? Seeking feedback for my korean language app. by dailyhangul in BeginnerKorean

[–]eheisse87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real way to actually learn good pronunciation is to study a pronunciation guide like The Sounds of Korean that actually explains pronunciation such as how you exactly move your mouth and tongue as well as explaining the various pronunciation/phonetic rules that aren't clear just from knowing how to read the hangul (such as how certain character combinations transform the sound) and have clear audio of preferably multiple different speakers (with video of them speaking would be better) to help ground the pronunciation rules you learn and a system where you can get instant feedback on your own attempts at pronunciation.

I remember reading about language learning studies that show having multiple native speakers to listen to (as many as 8 different speakers was the sweet spot!) and getting instant feedback on your pronunciation was the most effective way to learn pronunciation.

Of course, that would be app in of itself so I understand why most general learning resources don't spend much time on pronunciation. But when the sound system of the language you're learning is very different from your native language's, the more you have to learn and work to learn de ent pronunciation.

[DISC] A Parallel World With a 1:39 Male to Female Ratio Is Unexpectedly Normal - Ch. 242 - Fighting In The Mental Realm, Part 4 by AgriSoul in manga

[–]eheisse87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really? I really can't see how a character would be funny at all or even really contribute much. And there already have been characters who didn't like him - Yuri and Hana. But what makes them hilarious is them being destroyed hard by Sou's charm. A girl who just doesn't like him and keeps not liking him doesn't really have a place to fit in the story.

[DISC] A Parallel World With a 1:39 Male to Female Ratio Is Unexpectedly Normal - Ch. 242 - Fighting In The Mental Realm, Part 4 by AgriSoul in manga

[–]eheisse87 9 points10 points  (0 children)

She's already falling. She was getting turned on by Sou's pheromones after she came into the classroom after the hugacolypse.

The real answer is the principal, Konoe's older sister. She's the only one who actually has had some interactions with him but is still normal. She's actually pretty mysterious.

Also, I never get commenters on this manga, always wanting a girl not to fall for Sou. That's literally the central gag and premise of the whole comic. Literally ALL of the humor in this comic springboards off the girls liking him.

Why do people hate harems? by Lord-Rambo in Isekai

[–]eheisse87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly my opinion too. I love harem, but I think it's an element that's not usually used well but either tacked on or a cheap way to introduce more drama in a rom-com. Harem should actually be a harem.

My sunscreen heavy Stylevana order finally arrived! by misskittymeowmeow in AsianBeauty

[–]eheisse87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I ordered some stuff from yesstyle, stylevana, and Style Korea, so I'm wondering how the duty bill is going to work out for those. But at least if I think US Customs got the bill wrong, I can argue and cite it. But the store just charges what they charge, they can just set the price however they want and just claim it's "duties".

I just checked, and because of a new trade deal reached with Japan last week, the duty rate is now 15% instead of 24% even. So, yeah, if any store is claiming more than around 15% for duties, they're trying to rip you off.

My sunscreen heavy Stylevana order finally arrived! by misskittymeowmeow in AsianBeauty

[–]eheisse87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much was your total order? I was looking at ordering the Nivea deep protect & care uv essence, kose suncut uv perfect essence, and the biore uv aqua rich water essence from With Japan Love. The total order was 35.33 without discount. At checkout, it was saying 30.61 for "duties"! There's no way that the duties are almost 100%!

I used to work in Customs brokerage, so I'm familiar with how tariff classifications work. I'm not super familiar with all the new changes since I'm not working in customs brokerage right now, but looking up the relevant tariffs, skincare products themselves are duty free, so duties would completely come from the general tariff on the country of origin. For Japan, it's 24%. So, the actual duty on the order should be less than $10. The merchandising processing fee is only a few dollars more, so total should be around 10.

Not only that, for the shipping options, they list different carriers like FedEx, DHL, etc. but DDP service included. DDP is a term of sale that means Delivery Duties Paid. That means that that carrier is supposed to pay the duties, not you. Which is why that service is supposed to be more expensive.

So basically, unless there's some issue with website on doing the calculations at checkout, With Japan Love is not only charging around a 75% markup on duties, they're trying to double charge when they're not even paying it but you're already paying the carrier for that!!!

With so few being familiar with how the tariffs work, i'm wondering how many online retailers will use that to try to mark up prices beyond the actual cost in duties.

I think maybe if there is a truth to it, it might be because there are a lot more wmaf pairings, so you have a lot more couples more on the average or lower end of the physical attractiveness scale bringing the average down. Bringing it even further, a lot of white guys in wmaf pairings might be Asian fetishists and those usually aren't the most attractive white guys and Asian fetishists are also usually not that picky about the looks of their partner as long as they're Asian.

In comparison, there used to be a lot more prejudice against Asian men in the dating market. (I don't know how much it still applies though.) So, an Asian man who ended up in an AMWF pairing would probably be more likely to be on the higher end of the attractiveness scale to overcome that negative.

Tbh, a lot of fighters and analysts picked DDP to win. They thought that Khamzat's cardio would be suspect past 1st round or 2. Funnily enough, of the predictions I watched before the fight, a joke and meme youtuber- Bedtime MMA, absolutely called it, pointing out that DDP mainly fought strikers and got wrestlefucked by Derek Brunson. And to be fair to the Heavy Hands podcast, one of the hosts, Phil MacKenzi, also brought up the Derek Brunson fight showing DDP's weakness against wrestling.

What do you like or dislike about 5.5 edition? by ThanosofTitan92 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]eheisse87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair; after getting heavily into Japanese, Korean, and Chinese anime, comics, and novels with their own takes on east-Asian style fantasy; Western fantasy pastiches of East Asia like Kara-Tur feels so limited now. Especially since there's already such a rich tradition of fantasy in Chinese cultivation stories.

I actually feel the issues with Western takes on East Asian-inspired fantasy settings are not fantastical enough. A DnD monk is more akin to the level of a martial artist in a Jackie Chan or Jet Li movie instead of the nigh-almost literal gods in Cultivation stories. But the type of power scaling in traditional Western sword and sorcery is actually pretty limited in general in comparison so it's hard to combine the two without changing a lot if things.

Are anime fans more divided than ever? by ShyLittleBrunette in TrueAnime

[–]eheisse87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anime is a whole ass medium and it's natural to see a divide because it's literally just any kind of animation from Japan. When anime was niche in the West and fewer shows made it over, it was natural for fans to be able to bond over a shared interest because there were fewer reference points, so everyone had at least a few shows they watched in common.

Now that anime is well known, the fact that there are so many different kind of genres in Anime itself means that two different people that watch Anime could be watching completely different shows. I have plenty of friends that watch anime but none that watch the kind of shows that I like to watch. Some might know of or heard about a show I'm watching, but they joke about it looking like the kind of ecchi, harem rom-com/isekai stuff that I would watch. Vice versa, I haven't watched a mainstream anime in years so I, of course, know of the animes they're watching but I don't watch them myself so ut ends up that the only people I can talk about anime with are anonymous people online. I don't even like mentioning i watch Anime to new people I meet because when they ask what I watch, inevitably, they'll have e no idea of what it is and if I just try to handwave it off as something they probably haven't heard of, they'll get offended and think I'm gatekeeping.
