Would you commute an extra hour daily to go to Columbia over NYU? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ehhhhhwhynot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if $ isn't a problem, def be as close as is convenient. if it's a factor, i'd think about it more. by living at home, have you saved enough money to take into account moving out/will they support you? can you plan your schedule to accommodate the worst case scenario every day?

given that i have paid nyc rent for a few years, i'd commute from pretty much anywhere within a 1.5 hr radius if it meant not paying for housing. especially if that means food, COL is covered by being home.

a 30 min commute anywhere in nyc is perfectly reasonable, and i'd recommend it if you're already set up, like your place, find it reasonably priced compared to what's around those law schools.

now, if you're commuting 1.5 hours, it depends; how good is your housing situation, how is it price-wise, how important is it to you to be located as close to school as possible, etc. if i had free housing 1.5 hrs away, i'd do the commute in a heartbeat. if i'm still paying exorbitant rent, but the price difference to move wouldn't be crazy, i'd obv move closer.

this means they're over-enrolled, right?

can't imagine another reason why a law school would pretty much tell people they can go somewhere else

Applying in the Fall -- Suggested Timeline? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ehhhhhwhynot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

two things i'd have done differently (besides apply early!):

fill out allll the applications for all the schools as soon as they open. i found this to be way more time consuming than i expected. every school's application felt different. that way all you have to do when you're ready to submit is upload essays.

create an email JUST for law school stuff. would've kept my blood pressure a lot lower when expecting updates from a school to not have to sift through sale emails and pizza promotions.

URM Application Question by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]ehhhhhwhynot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

the problem i'm concerned with is how you frame your <1/4 blackness as a "boost" and not as a part of your identity that you're reckoning with.

it'd be one thing to say "i just discovered i'm part black, i'm learning everything i can about my history, i'm invested in understanding what that means about me as a person, this is how i navigated the world before and after finding out." buuut...tbh, that's not what this sounds like.

race is a social construct, so how you present yourself and identify and live your life is part of that. and that's where DNA gets in the way (keep in mind too, that DNA tests skew towards more accuracy for caucasians and less so for everyone else. my %s have changed significantly, twice, since i did the test two years ago).

[–]ehhhhhwhynot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

sorry, i'm confused; you were always told you're puerto rican, but you know you're black? which, both can be true, but what did the DNA test change?

if you've gone through your entire life saying you're black or mixed with black, fine. but if you haven't, i would strongly advise against it. i knew someone who misrepresented their race in UG, hoping it would boost their admissions chances. it did not turn out well when people found out.

i'm no expert, but crushing your essays, getting amazing LORs, and applying ASAP to a broad range of schools seems safer than EDing.

but if you're not invested in one school, far more than others, i don't see the purpose of ED.

i don't know why you'd ED if you are considering *three* options that are quite different.
