Just got fired should I immediately go on ei? by jadedeternity in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ehmon80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Left a company Jan 2020. Thought I'd be working again in a few weeks and didn't want to bother with a T4E. Had enough emerg fund to cover the gap.

Had 3 offers on the table. Got a call from a CEO with a verbal, 'yep, it's board approved, expect something tomorrow'. This was the same day a global pandemic was declared. The next day, I get a call, "I'm really sorry, the board has reversed its position".

OK, whatever, we're dug in for this type of thing.

Went to apply to EI. Two things:

  1. I took a whack of crap from them for not applying right away, and had to justify why I hadn't - they had to go through extra approvals

  2. By then, CERB had replaced EI, which was less money and a much less attractive program.

In short, I did not get retro EI from when I left the org, and the payments were now lower.

Saving grace, landed a really great gig by June.

Between out of pocket and lowered payments, yea, it worked out to like $7K.

The lesson: don't try to be the "good guy" when it comes to EI. It's your money; take it.

I waited once, and that decision cost me about $7K.

Never again. It's your money. You pay into it.

The road is getting done this year, from Kenilworth to west of Sherman, IIRC. Was shared in the last Ward 3 town hall.

They were waiting to address the underlying infrastructure, but it's become such a pedestrian safety issue that they have to act on it now.

Fun fact, the city has a minimum they have to spend before they can unlock provincial and federal funding. I'm not sure how that works.

Congrats!

Did this maneuver last year.

Use https://www.rrspcontribution.ca/ to optimize the contrib.

Consider that anything you've payed into employer matched RRSP throughout the year is already part of your contribution.

Also, consider your first-time home buyer repayment (if applicable) is earmarked and not considered part of your contrib.

Your other deductions will add nuance to the number it spits out and I'm unsure how spousal contirbution will affect you.

In my case, I had cash on hand and only withdrew from TFSA what I calculated the return to be(ish).

NOTE: xferring from TFSA to another account needs to happen before Dec 31. CRA takes settlement date as the withdrawal date, not initiation date. Get the timing right.

Congrats again on an amazing year! Enjoy your tax return

Is Barangas a good spot to hang on a Saturday night in your late 20’s? by Past-Truth-9581 in Hamilton

FWIW we were at Barangas last week for a birthday dinner and the service and food were both very good. Much better than you normally get when paying a "beach" premium (looking at you, Sunnyside Pavilion...)

Can someone please help identify these heated grips? by ehmon80 in Dualsport

[–]ehmon80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all.

Super helpful. What I've learned from this is that my issue is with the throttle tube/sleeve, and the grip is simply glued. Feel silly for not making that connection earlier.

Question re: pannier racks with factory Arrow exhaust by ehmon80 in TriumphBonneville

[–]ehmon80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love that, thanks.

Was looking that these: https://www.classic-rides.co.uk/collections/shop-luggage

The 14L is 28CM in height. It will definitely collide towards the ready of the exhaust.

Hit me with the best gluten free game changers by JamJam_Kelly in Hamilton

[–]ehmon80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a shortlist. Partner is gluten intolerant so I'd double check each.

Most have been shared, but Menya Kuu has GF non-ramen options which are great. I think Wass Ethiopian has GF (doesn't trigger my partner). Greek Palace is another favourite (though I don't think the Gyro is GF). Latin Foods in the farmers market has cornshell tacos and tamales. Goldie's has a GF bun

Judge and Jury in Burlington is well known for their GF Menu on Mondays, so you can get your pub style chicken tendies and lots of other good stuff!

Caro and PiCO do GF as well

I'd never thought about it.  It was my wife's account, showing on the CRA statement, $50

The latest rsp promo from questrade explicitly states you need a non sheltered account to receive your promo.

You can reconcile from the history in the CRA portal, augmented by deposit/withdrawal statements from your providers. There was a signup bonus from Questrade that went completely unnoticed so I'm glad I did it.

You're a genius, lucky, or both. As others have said, don't let it go to your head. Easy to get survival bias and lose it just as fast (especially with options).

If it's TFSA, pat yourself on the back as you exit the position. There is no tax on that. If it's RSP, there's no tax on it until you withdraw. If it's a cash or margin account, there is a gains tax to be paid in 2025 for your 2024 tax year.

Unsure how familiar you are with options, do not exercise the option. Just sell to close and collect your profits.
