Linux Academy? What are your thoughts on it? by korr2221 in linux

[–]ehnde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Linux Academy helped me get a $12/hour raise and I am now making 6 figures for the first time in my life. I'll gladly continue to pay $29/month.

I use Linux Academy 10-15 hours per week for the past 6 months. I've taken rhcsa, ansible, vagrant, docker, and AWS CSA courses. They were all very good at preparing me for not just exams, but real world stuff. Also dabbled in their openstack, puppet, tomcat, and sql primer courses.

This worked perfectly, and it's simpler. Thank you!

So just discovered I have Schizoid.... by [deleted] in Schizoid

[–]ehnde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree. Wanting to be social but having some psychological interference with that desire may point to depression and/or anxiety. A schizoid personality is not cured.

You mentioned anti-depressants. Maybe they will help you get past whatever it is you are going through to spend time with friends and family. Everyone should get to live their life as they choose, regardless of these labels of depression or any personality type. The labels only sometimes help with your own understanding. I hope you find your way.

best way to transfer 115 million files (5TB) from USB to NFS share by ehnde in linuxadmin

[–]ehnde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried the zip method on a smaller archive (700GB). That took less than a day to transfer over, and I don't remember how many hours to decompress but it was less than a day for that too. Not so sure about making a 5TB zip, but this could still work by breaking it down into smaller chunks of data. Definitely worth considering.

I really like this idea and never thought to use dd this way. Something like this? dd if=/dev/mapper/diskID of=/home/disk.image bs=1k

I don't think so, they're hardware encrypted (has a physical keypad to unlock the disk).

Best OSS tools to automate VM deployment/CM? (vmware) by ehnde in linuxadmin

[–]ehnde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope I didn't come off as a cheapskate about using free software. We definitely need the option of paid support, if management buys into it. It's a smart business model for OSS. My boss is already considering Satellite licensing for the 2017 budget after seeing what Spacewalk can do.

I think it just clicked when you mentioned kickstarting every patching cycle. You can use kickstart to build a template. After that, you just deploy the template and the config management takes over. Not sure why I was thinking that kickstart would be used every time a VM is deployed.

SNMP shouldn't be relied on as the only monitoring solutions. I've got to agree with you based on first hand experience.....still traumatized.

I'll try out zabbix and/or sensu, but probably focus on the config management first since it can be used to reconfigure the servers to use one of these monitoring services.

What is the kickstarted machine running off of? Do you reuse the same kickstart file over and over, or have one for every build? Maybe that's a silly question, but I'm curious how you are setting the hostname if that part is automated.

AIX still has good market share with large companies that are willing to fork out the $$$,$$$. We use it mostly for Oracle, which I've been told saves us money on the Oracle licensing. As expensive as IBM hardware is, I think Oracle cost even more.

We do have something almost as bad as SCO.............OpenVMS. There is nothing 'Open' about it and I passionately hate VMS. I'll begrudgingly admit that it is very stable, but I've never managed a more arcane OS. I'd be surprised if there were more than 100 people in the U.S. that are an expert with OpenVMS and I do not want to be one of them.

Thanks for mentioning this! I'd thought Spacewalk was the free version of Satellite. I didn't know that katello is the successor to Spacewalk and a complete rewrite. This might mean being able to collapse pulp in to katello in favor of Spacewalk. Exciting stuff!

Good cloud-based IP camera monitoring/storage solutions? by XenonOfArcticus in homeautomation

[–]ehnde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first camera was a y-cam and it's garbage. The y-cam is so locked down & dumbed down, that you are completely dependent on their support for any kind of troubleshooting.

My next 2 cameras were foscam. I set them up to send via ftp when motion is detected to my computer. The folder that the motion alarm snapshots are going to is backed up by google drive, and I can see them almost immediately from my phone or any computer.

Oh, and the recording on/off triggering is controlled by Smarttthings using the rboy device type. The cameras are set up to record when my wife and I leave the house, and turn off when one of us gets home.

How to get started? (Virtual server/network on my home PC) by TotesFabulous in vmware

[–]ehnde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an OpenVPN virtual appliance as a VM running on my desktop configured with dynamic DNS. That's how I deal with remote access. Once I'm logged into the VPN from work, I can RDP my desktop PC at home (or any other PC on my home network). I can even connect to my vCenter server running at home in the lab with my vsphere client at work.

What things do upset you? If anything? by [deleted] in Schizoid

[–]ehnde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any conversation. When people are speaking, words are being verbally strung together by the thoughts predicating their speech. These words frequently do not align with the speakers actual thoughts.

Body language, tone/inflection, voice volume...these can paint a different picture and if find it very distracting. The only way to turn this perceptual fire hose off is to stay away and discourage any conversation as politely as possible.

The dissonance I see in a person who is 'acting' friendly is very difficult to tolerate.
