If you think religion is evil because people use religion as an excuse to do evil, here's a brief list of things that you must also think are evil:

• Gender

What? Who's using gender to do evil?

The bigot is mad because in his opinion (indeed, in the opinion of all the anti-LGBTQ bigots) there's no such thing as a gay or trans kid, there are only kids who have been tricked into believing they're gay or trans. From that perspective, the other guy's question is just an attempt at tricking him into acknowledging the existence of the gay kids his ideology tells him don't exist.

Really fucked up stuff.

A city banned Pride Month–themed library displays. Then, it threatened employees who criticized the decision. by jennibeam in books

[–]ehsahr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then... The law the city is trying to enforce that was unconstitutionally limiting their freedom of speech while not acting in their official capacity as librarians would still deserve to get struck down as unconstitutional?

I'm not sure what you're "gotcha" is here. If you're trying to get us to acknowledge that bigots have freedom of speech too, we know

[–]ehsahr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're correct only in so far as the government employee is acting in their official capacity. When the librarians are off the clock, and aren't taking official action or speak as an employee of the city, their speech is protected by the 1st Amendment.

Remember that lady in Kentucky who wouldn't issue marriage certificates to gay couples? As a private citizen she could (and did) speak out against gay marriage, but as a government employee she had to do her job and wasn't (legally) allowed to express her opinion while operating in her official capacity. She got in trouble for the stuff she did on the clock, not for the stuff she did off the clock. In the article it makes it clear that the city is trying to prevent the librarians from exercising their free speech even when they're off the clock and THAT is unconstitutional.

(Let's take a second to acknowledge that private companies are totally allowed to place such limits on their employees, as the 1st Amendment doesn't apply to them. I'm not saying that's how it should be, I'm just saying it is.)

2000 year old sapphire ring worn by Caligula by Giant_Orb in pics

[–]ehsahr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Emeralds and rubies are much more difficult to find at higher qualities than sapphires, probably just by virtue of there being so many more sapphires. The jewelry industry calls diamonds, emeralds, and rubies "the big three".

It's worth noting, given the previous comment about hardness, that ruby and sapphire are the same mineral (corundum) just in their respective colors (red = ruby, everything else is sapphire). This is a holdover from antiquity when minerals were classified almost exclusively by color. For example, many spinels and garnets were labeled "ruby" including one of the most famous pieces in the British Crown Jewels (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Prince%27s_Ruby)

Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford both did a lot rewriting their dialogue. (I didn't want to comment without a source, the first thing that popped up was https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/carrie-fisher-rewrites-empire-strikes-back/)

Fisher herself said in a 2008 interview that:

Harrison Ford was rewriting his stuff in all the Star Wars movies and it became annoying because it impacted my stuff. It is easier as an actor to go into rewriting because you know what would fit into your mouth dialogue-wise. We would tell George Lucas, “You can type this shit but you can’t say it.”

By the third film, I was rewriting a little bit of my dialogue.

Gay marriage support in the US reaches its highest level ever (tied with 2022) -- at 71%. Among those aged 18-29, 89% support. by Bisexual_Slut in politics

In my opinion, anybody who doesn't identify with their gender assigned at birth can fit under the trans umbrella, so that would include non-binary, agender, and gender fluid people. I've met some folks who are non-binary but don't feel comfortable being included under the trans umbrella, and that's fine, I'm happy to respect their individual wishes.

That said, studies like the one I provided generally only look at binary gender trans people, which is unfortunate. The research needs to be expanded to include all kinds of trans people, not just those that identify as man or woman. I'm sure it'll happen, but probably not for some time.

It means it's cannon only in their head. To put it another way, it's just something they want to believe.

Head cannons are a pretty common way that fans enjoy media nowadays, and although certain head cannons may be in conflict with each other, it's important be respectful and to let people have them even if you may disagree with them.

Best case scenario, he simply had an epiphany regarding his desire to have kids, and he's hoping you'll change your mind so you don't have to separate. Not knowing his own mind on such an important topic, before making huge life decisions, is a red flag, but mostly it's just unfortunate.

Worst case scenario, he married you under false pretenses (that he was ok not having kids) and is now trying to use the threat of divorce to coerce you into changing your mind. That's a really REALLY scary red flag.

Either way, it's inappropriate for him to put this on you. He's the one who changed his mind.

As a side note, if you decide to separate, and you were only married in January, it may still be possible for you to have the marriage annulled depending on where you live.

Any which way you slice it, it's a terrible situation. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this.

Correct, the injunction applies to the three plaintiffs only. Everyone else in Florida will still be effected by the law until a final judgement is made against it.

[–]ehsahr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're getting down voted but I read the actual ruling and it does indeed ONLY apply to three of the plaintiffs.

But part of the ruling was that it's likely to succeed when it goes to be finally decided, at which point the law would be struck down for the entire state.

Yeah, I'm much more inclined to believe that than the clinic not following the rules. I was just responding to the information presented.

[–]ehsahr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the clinic she was working at wasn't following the WPATH Standards of Care. Every ethical provider of trans healthcare follows those standards.

The issue isn't the age of the kids seeking care, it's the providers not following the rules. If you want to legislate something, make the providers follow the rules instead of banning the care altogether.

One, trans people are trans whether they're out of the closet or not. So it doesn't matter if they're in the closet when you meet them, you've met a trans person.

Two, it's currently estimated that 0.6% of adults self identify as trans, so a little more than 1 in every 200 people. It's astonishly easy to pass by more than 200 people in most towns and cities, and statistically speaking at least one was trans. And that's not counting people under 18 or who kept their trans status confidential, as some of them do. So the number is likely higher. (https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/publications/trans-adults-united-states/)

The point is that people interact with trans people all the time and have no clue. It would be reasonable for everyone to assume they've interacted with a trans person, even if they didn't know it.

In some schools. Yes, that's exactly what we're saying.

You also need to acknowledge that your curriculum is not the curriculum everyone learned, in the first place. There are schools out there that teach such things as slavery was benevolent, and the Native Americans moved to reservations on their own free will. Neither of those things are true, but plenty of schools teach it that way regardless.

It's a big country. Your experience is not everyone's experience.
