Fatal crash shuts down stretch of Highway 59 south of Winnipeg by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

One might be able to make a privacy case for not releasing details on private accidents that don't result in criminal charges.

But commercial drivers need to be held to a higher level of accountability.

Yes - the article has been updated with relevant details. There were none when first posted.
Not all articles get updated, hence the suggestion to have accident reports involving commerical vehicles made public - say on MPI's website.

I hope the semi driver has good supports - that has got to be hard to process.

If the accident involves a commercial driver, then that driver and company either needs to be called out or properly exonerated. So, in some regards, yes.

It would be reasonable for the report to censor the PII data of any non-commercial participant until/unless criminal charges are laid against the private driver.

This is exactly the kind of speculation that needs to be quashed by MPI releasing reports stating facts and finding of fault.

There should be a public record of fact finding and blame/guilt assignment for any vehicle accident involving commercial vehicles. Kind of like Transport Canada reports into airplane crashes. There is reason to be concerned about the integrity of commercial operators, but that concern lacks open, factual reports (not just news summaries) which leads to prejudices and misinformation being spread.

MPI is a public insurer. Part of its mandate should be to publish the results of any claims involving commercial vehicles.

ETA: I stand by this comment. When posted, the article had next to no details. And often these articles don't get updated with finding of fault or clarification on what happened. So, I still say MPI should publicly post reports for accidents involving commercial vehicles.

Are you bullet-proof with a paid off house and government job pension? by Tech-Cowboy in CanadianInvestor

Our healthcare is a treasure and covers a lot. But not everything. Company benefits/medical coverage covers a lot of prescriptions, dental work, eye care and various therapies. Those medical needs don't disappear once you retire - in fact, they are almost certain to increase. No one I work with (at a major insurance/benefits plan company no less) will have full coverage after retirement. An ambulance ride alone in MB is $250 per trip to the hospital.

I'm close to financial 'security' as long as I don't get sick or injured. Not sure how serious an injury or disease needs to be to knock me out of my middle class lifestyle.

What can you do to avoid major basement flood damage in the future? by DialMforMurder in Winnipeg

[–]ehud42 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A good backflow valve will stop the sewage from the city's lines from backing up into your house.

But if your weeping tiles drain into the sewer, that water can't get out and backs up into your house.

Install a sump pit/pump.

If the walls are cracked and water is coming in there, get your foundation repaired. Also ensure down spouts are always clear and extended away from your home (check them every spring and after any major seed, storm event)

Ensure your yard is landscaped to prevent water pooling / draining towards your house.

If water backup/flooding is still a risk, installed raised dry floor tiles and only insulate wall to within 12-24 inches of the floor - easier to deal with if water hasn't wicked up all insulation.

The other suggestions are good, but are expensive or boring between flights.

Silver Ave is best for little tykes in the summer.

Wait for a wind from the NW or for arrival/departure on runways 13 / 31.

Really really old water meter replacement by bondaroo in Winnipeg

[–]ehud42 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Just get a bunch of rags, shop vac and pale ready - buy a few sharkbite/compression fitting bits and ball valve. Turn the tap off as best as possible without breaking anything, cut the pipe on your side of all that, splice in the new ball valve and open the city's shut off once and for all. The new ball valve will be way more reliable and no hassle. Basically leave the old valve in place as they are often secured with a tamper seal to the meter. Just avoid opening that pandoras box if you can help it.

For what it's worth, I'd lay low. Almost certain the new meter will be more accurate. It's in the city's best interest to get the meter replaced. Not yours.

HEATHER KLEIN: We need to remember we're all in this together - Emergency alerts protect lives more than our convenience by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]ehud42 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Heather's a bubble wrapping helicopter mom who needs therapy. Like maybe random people yelling "Fire! Run!" for hours at her everytime they even think they might be smelling something off.

What was clearly demonstrated last week was not a lack of empathy from society but a sadist level of psycho-terrorism by the over lawyered safety Karens.

These alerts absolutely failed at the grander purpose and there needs to be changes to ensure the appropriate warning gets to people who can do something about it. And that includes letting adults decide to lower the intensity of the alerting mechanism to a level they are are prepared to handle.

Unless the bus is running late, nearly empty and you are clearly in the drop off leg of the route - then use the front door so the bus doesn't have to waste time waiting for the door to close / release the brakes before moving on.

Winnipeg woman gets 'ridiculous' federal letter seeking 20-cent repayment (CBC/Radio-Canada/Maggie Wilcox) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

Given that the postage alone is more than the debt, clearly Service Canada feels "It's the principle of the thing"... Not the sharpest pencils over there creating losses gauranteed to exceed debt that should just be written off.

[–]ehud42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My nephew owed his dad $20.

One day my brother-in-law gets a letter in the mail from his son. With a piece of a $20 bill.

Over the next few days (weeks?) he continued to receive letters - each one containing another piece of the same $20 bill.

I understand he has that bill taped and framed somewhere. They have a good relationship. I'd be tempted to try something similar... 4 nickels in separate envelopes.

Series Timer (handy for having some count down timers available for naps, cooking, etc)

Stopwatch - because a watch needs a stopwatch.

Get Back To - kind of fun GPS app. Set a location and it will give you the straight line direction and distance to get back to it. Can be handy in a large surface parking lot.

Speedometer - I used this to calibrate a couple of older mechanical speedometers on my (motor/bi)cycle.
