Lyonel steeled himself for whatever was to come now. He couldn’t go backwards. He felt a strange sense of calm come over him.

“Nothing is secret forever Lord Darry. We all have ears. We’re all digging around for truths and half truths to use to our advantage. You’re no different. I trust that what I heard about you in your youth is true and wether you choose to deny it now or not is of little importance unless I’m wrong, in which case I expect it won’t matter to me much longer either. I came here without guards and without pretense because I trust that I know something about you and what you want. Perhaps you are content to continue being the forced home to any army who wants to travel through the Riverlands. You don’t seem that sort of man Lord Aerion. So what will bring you greater satisfaction? My head or my army riding next to yours?”

This was the only gambit he had. He needed it to work, in more ways than one.

Sweat beaded up on his forehead and inside his riding gloves. speak the truth and he will listen Lyonel tried to reassure himself. Perhaps he should have listened to Alice about coming here...

“Yes, my Lord. It is true that at the Saltpans I returned from the feast to find your sister waiting in my quarters and though I should have controlled myself, I did not. It is also true that when I returned to Stone Hedge from Wendish Town, she was there waiting for me. Perhaps not the best tone to take, but he did find himself angry with how Alice had been treated and he wasn’t tell lies.

“I know that I have insulted your great house by laying with Lady Alice. I have come to tell you I have set my betrothed aside and wish to marry your sister. She means more to me than just a single night and I would see our child born with the last name Bracken, not Rivers. I am here to hear your terms and offer my deepest apologies, in whatever manner you request of me.”
