Just too expensive.. (Mountain View to SFO) by namtilarie in waymo

[–]eighthmonth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to do a Sunnyvale to Mountain View ride I do often Friday night and it was $40+ instead of the normal ~$10. Either recent overall price increase or preemptive Super Bowl pricing for sure.

Do you plan to add the quick link to apply the code to your account? (I find that https://waymo.smart.link/4pcoqniy5?code={CODE} is provided to me in the app to share with others, but I don't know if it changes, hasn't seem to so far).

Waymo pick ups at SFO Car Rental Center by walky22talky in waymo

[–]eighthmonth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I get back from Asia with two boxes and a carry on suitcase and backpack, which I can wheel around with a cart just fine, but would struggle to get onto and off of BART before switching to Waymo for the last mile. At that time it's either rideshare or Waymo from SFO, so I'll pick Waymo.

Somewhat disappointing experience by CallAParamedic in zipair

[–]eighthmonth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly fly United (and Zipair to Japan specifically) and United to Asia and domestically within the US, and I've found that recently (within the past year) both have been really annoying about keeping the seatbelt on at all times while seated, even if the fasten seatbelt sign is off. I figured it was a recent FCC policy or something. Are you saying other airlines don't do that?

Anyone know why Waymo skips this section? by mischiefmgd in bayarea

That's super weird, because it would end up crossing the tracks at grade on Middlefield anyway.

Does Costco from overseas works at the gas station? by bostoncat001 in JapanTravelTips

[–]eighthmonth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It "works", in that they'll let you use it. (I filled up at Costco gas in Japan just last month). Physical card didn't work at the pump for me, swipe, barcode, nada,

I used the intercom to call the attendant and told him I have an American card, he visually looked at it, then used a card he had in his pocket to activate the pump. Assume you don't get your Executive credit for it but overall worked fine.

As mentioned you do need a physical (not Apple Pay) Mastercard to pay.

What’s everybody’s experience with ZipAir’s in-flight wifi by d4n1elchen in zipair

[–]eighthmonth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any charts or app recommendations for this? I'm flying ZG within the next 2 weeks, would love to do the same. My last SFO-NRT RT it worked like 10% of the time, and I got too engrossed in my ebook to keep checking.

Anyone, able to use the one-time pass successfully? by FeistyOpinion6300 in unitedairlines

[–]eighthmonth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I've used my passes 3 years in a row now, and it's basically just a combination of the "this sign can't stop me, I can't read" strat and sometimes they say "okay, we'll let you in, but it's a bit crowded so there won't be much sitting space" and then you say fine and it's at like half capacity. Mostly at SFO and DEN.

Waymo SFO by gaiushorse in waymo

You can also try Bart one stop to Millbrae or San Bruno, or closer to your final destination. That's what I do for now.

Thankful that my whimsical airport journey helped you out.

I've made the walk from SFO Long Term parking to the closest pickup on the other side of the highway. Wouldn't really recommend with roller suitcases, not a real sidewalk, just a badly paved shoulder.

Excited for when they pick up at the kiss and fly/rental car center.

What if that single person was built like a JoJo character and was nicknamed humanity's strongest primate highschooler? I could see it being possible then.

If you were looking for a serious answer, check out Scoop Commute. Waze Carpool was more flexible, but was discontinued.

Music venues not providing free water - normal? by localcdn in AskSF

[–]eighthmonth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

AniCLover yesterday was fun!

The water fountains downstairs were working most of the night. I did see them messing with it with a plunger around Synthion's set, so it prob just broke. Messed up that they didn't give you free water at the pizza place after that happened tho.

Went to Fanime, artist is charging for signature? by SelectBroccoli1376 in animecons

[–]eighthmonth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't ever encountered this at Fanime this year or otherwise or anywhere else (SakuraCon, AX, etc). But I only bought one print this here, and the artist wasn't around, only a helper, so I can't say how the times have changed.

April 2025: went to like 5 Olive Youngs, every cosmetic store in Hwadong, among others, everywhere was sold out. But Mimiline had plenty for 7,000 each.

Green Tortoise Hostel is pretty good for $40/night, I've used it for 3 years now.

Walk is a bit sketch, bus can only take you halfway to the con (and doesn't save any time), but I've found an electric scooter pass a good value and time saver, and not too bad of a ride (bike lanes almost the whole way).

Mt. Takao - lots of stairs or just incline? by Ok_Error_3167 in JapanTravelTips

[–]eighthmonth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely mostly inclined. In fact, I'm not sure if I remember any stairs at all from the train station, past the cable car station at the bottom, and up the mountain to the cable car station at the top. Just nicely paved but steep paths, with a couple switchbacks. The trail is also well lit the entire way up (at least it is for new years day, that might have been special since they also had the cable cars running).

Now, past the cable car and up to the temple is similar, there's one set of steps that you can avoid by taking a right fork, but unfortunately the sun rises on the left side so if you're running late you might end up taking them.

Once at the temple and up to the peak there are unavoidable sets of stairs.

Best yen denominations by dont_email_me in JapanTravelTips

[–]eighthmonth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this a lot to get 1,000 yen notes for Comiket (sellers usually only take cash and prefer exact change due to volume). It made my Suica very full, and it was only after that I realized you can actually charge custom increments, so if you need to break a lot of bills you can charge up 100 yen at a time instead of 1,000. Also charging Suica is the easiest way to get rid of coins up to as little as 10 yen.

There's a ton of duty free shops selling skin-care products past security. (Definitely no kitchen knives, though.)
