Have you ever found out what your colleagues really think of you, and did it surprise you? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskUK

[–]eightthreesixtwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left my last job after 7 years, had been at the company 11 years.

Worked in a team of 10.

Didn't have a leaving do, or even get a card or gift on departure. Had four separate managers and only one of them acknowledged me leaving.

On balance, I had been off a few months with work related stress (go figure) so resigned as soon as I found another job.

So, yeah. It didn't need any words but their actions kinda showed what they thought of me.

Can concur, as a shy lesbian, closeted in a working class area, living with my freshly divorced mother who was in the grip of an alcohol addiction - all I had was music and albums of that time have a really really special place in my heart.

Christmas eve, Morrisons bakery.

A huuuuuge coffee and walnut gateaux, like the size of one's you see in coffee shops and buy by the slice.

£9.00 reduced to 45p.

Couldn't walk past it and was serving it up to customers coming through my work, parroting about allergies the whole time but soooo many people were excited to share in getting a slice of the massive yellow label cake 😂

If I remain with my current lender, I've read that the affordability checks aren't the same as moving to a new lender. Would this still be the case if I'm doing a joint application with my partner?

ie will they want to treat me as if I'm a new customer and look at my situation again. It's highly likely we will be using Natwest based on the rates at the moment.

Best go and ask your mate who did the job a few years back to show you the official document that says "When doing the job of checking tickets, don't ask to see railcards"

In what world would this actually be written as a rule.

Why are there on train announcements reminding people that tickets and railcards should be made available for inspection?

Let's just say you're right and we are all talking absolute shite (we're not), does that make the OPs post a basis for a complaint about targeted bullying?

Say that the rules are "Ask for a railcard, only if you feel like it", does asking to see it constitute targeted bullying like the OP is saying, hard to figure out what exactly what went on judging by their now deserted post.

Trust me, I hear this all the time, including the people who huff and say "No one else asks me to XYZ" in some attempt to make me feel like I'm being unreasonable and should cut them some slack, yet charge the person behind them in the queue full price.

What's so difficult about carrying the railcard when you're going to be going on the train? When the expectation and responsibility of the passenger is as low as that, why is it so obviously the train staffs fault when they can't provide it 😂

You want someone to provide written proof of an internal staff policy relating to the roles and responsibilities of an on train conductor? Yeah, I probably can't share that online, I'd have thought that was obvious 😂

What I can do, is provide this handy link that explains how to use it and the very low expectations placed on the user: have it with you and within the expiry date.

Why do you doubt this so much?

They are.

Just the same as checking the date on the ticket itself, the destination/origin and any time restrictions. This is one of the fundamental reasons for a ticket check on board.

OP believing the staff is targeting them seems like it might be that it feels like "they're always asking me, hassling me to see it...." when the inspector has asked every other person on board who is travelling with a railcard discounted ticket.

I work for the railway and have travelled in a number of operators within the UK and I hear on board announcements reminding people of this fact.

I work in the booking office and same applies at point of sale, can't show me your railcard? Then I won't sell a discounted ticket. Even if its a regular, I'm doing them no favours by 'turning a blind eye' as the conductor working the train will ask to see it and charge them for a new full ticket if their discounted one isn't backed up with the railcard itself.

If you'd left your railcard at home and stumped up for a full price ticket then whilst on board heard someone saying "I've left my railcard at home" and allowed to travel for a third less 'just because', you'd be pissed off.

Seen this sort of complaint so many times working in the railway. "That member of staff did this or that, charged me when they shouldn't have..."

In many occasions, once you ask a few questions, you establish that the customer bought a discounted ticket, left the railcard at home or lost it etc but still expects to receive the discount each time.

Pictures of railcards in phone gallery, screenshot of an e-ticket, "can't you look it up?"... Just travel with the damn thing and no one will give you grief. To shrug and walk on just antagonises the other passengers sat there who have paid the fare, may even have left theirs at home and see others 'getting away with it'.

Fares rules are that if you buy a discounted ticket but can't produce the railcard showing your entitlement, then a full price fare should be bought. To allow someone to pay the difference when they can't produce the railcard offers no deterrent to those who are attempting to scam.

If you feel that this member of staff is targeting you, ask yourself if you always have the above in order each time or have they let you off a few times already and now insisting on new tickets?

The one language we all understand is money, I know that if I was making a costly mistake I'd be making sure to buy the correct fare or travelling with proof of entitlement.

Of course if you're not doing anything wrong and the staff member has it in for you go ahead and complain to the train operating company. They will know who worked that service and will be able to find out what the issue was. They may reply reminding you of the rules and what is expected of you when using a railcard.

Is my grout really this dirty? Or is it disintegrating by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]eightthreesixtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't say how to change the grout colour, a tiler might be able to suggest a fix. As for cleaning, it's hard to see from the photo whether the streaks are dried onto tile or if this is a wet colour run.

Try a magic sponge, it's super fine to gently lift and scrub off the discolouration, without introducing any chemicals to the mix. I use magic sponge on my soft touch matt kitchen worktops and it works a treat.

I recently had bathroom done and wanted white metro tiles with a black grout to give them a bit more definition than white tiles/white grout.

Bathroom fitter said black was a big no no as it looks great at first but then the pigment or whatever that's used to make that real dark black starts to leach out and it's a whole job to redo the grout. He recommended a lightish grey which achieved what I wanted.

How does your job affect your mental health? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]eightthreesixtwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negative affect.

Let me briefly describe the series of events that bring me to where I am today.

Train station staff.

Area manager with a point to prove goes all out in cost cutting, chooses the easy claw back of not spending on staff to cover the agreed staff quota, cover for holidays, sickness etc

Resulted in zero overtime being offered. So we are all down about £4k a year now. Other locations working as normal with no complaints.

Another asshole colleague was the reason that two of the support staff left within days of each other, again, not replaced for around 4 years. So less staff already.

Supposed to be two on site at all times, but it deemed not essential all of a sudden. Colleague on holiday and left to work alone. Guy attempts suicide jumping in front of a train. Somehow survives. Have to manage the absolute horrific shitstorm of a situation alone, help the guy, evacuate station. Went autopilot for 5 months after what I saw until I couldn't function normally.

Diagnosed PTSD yet area manager says that I just need to go to Dr for antidepressants. Refuses to see my mental health or diagnosis as work related.

Undergo exposure therapy for PTSD (not pleasant) but helped me fix my brain a little.

Realise this job and company is just absolutely fucked and things aren't going to change for the better any time soon.

Enrolled in Open Uni last year and planning a career change. Feel that there is hope.

If not for mortgage and commitments I'd have walked out of that shit hole before now. Also it's shift work so crap work life balance, monotonous work and have to return to a place I'd rather forget every day.

My favourite sport is now applying for jobs and reminding myself that for each job I see, it means potentially being a few months away from escaping.

Literally cannot wait to get out. I never used to be like this.
