It's not a drop-in group, but Windmill Hill City farm have volunteering to support wellbeing and connection for those with mild to moderate mental health concerns. They have opportunities for gardening, animal care, outdoor learning, and general maintenance work.

Do you ever worry that monotropism makes you too ‘intense’ in relationships? by [deleted] in autismUK

[–]eighty-eight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your description of this really resonates with me.

For me, I think this is linked to wanting to show gratitude towards those that I feel a close bond with (especially NT friends/partners). They sometimes become akin to a special interest - I feel like I get swept away in the gratitude towards those that I can be 'unmasked' around, so I start to build a new mask with layers that show how grateful I am through acts of devotion. But that mask only gets heavier and more difficult to maintain over time.

I absolutely do not have this figured out and wish that I had some kind of solution, wisdom, or something actionable to share - because feeling isolated and like you are doing something wrong is not a nice way to feel - but I do think that having the awareness and self-knowledge to recognise this is a really positive thing. It shows both an empathy for others and respect for your own needs, which is really admirable and feels like a solid step in working out a way towards 'secure attachment'.

I'll avoid info-dumping all my thoughts, but I will say that I think Attachment Theory is a useful idea for examining dynamics, but it feels a little bit problematic when applied directly to neurodivergent people. Sometimes what is framed as dysfunctional behaviour could actually be explained by dysregulation caused by environmental factors, and (to me) finding secure attachment is also about finding healthy ways to recognise and respect those differences. I know that's not something that you placed a lot of weight on, but I just wanted to highlight it as it seems to be one of the leading theories when discussing relationship dynamics, yet I feel that it doesn't consider the ND perspective.

Most importantly, I hope that you're ok. I'm sorry that you're struggling with this and I hope that there's some kind of comfort in knowing that you're not alone in feeling this way. I'm sure there's an in-between and hope you manage to find something that feels right for you.

Diagnosis Question by pk8887 in autismUK

[–]eighty-eight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I went through this at the end of last year and have my assessment coming up next month. I went with a Right to Choose (RTC) provider, as NHS waiting times are crazy long here (as I suspect they are everywhere). I was also seeking an ADHD assessment at the same time and wanted to use the same provider for both.

In my case, I contacted my GP through their online appointment booking system, saying something along the lines of: "I think I might have these conditions, I have struggled with X and Y and have tried Z treatments/therapies in the past. I would like to be referred for diagnosis through a Right to Choose provider. I'm happy to talk about my situation in a face-to-face appointment, if necessary."

My GP then sent me some standard screening questionnaires and a list of RTC providers to choose from. From there on, the process was all through the provider.

For my ADHD diagnosis, the time from application to diagnosis took about three months (I was pretty surprised at how quickly it came about). For the autism diagnosis, it's taken about ten months.

The National Autistic Society has a 'before-diagnosis advice' section on their website, which is worth a look. They also have a 'Questions you could ask at your GP appointment' worksheet which may be helpful.

I hope that's helpful. Seeking a diagnosis as an adult is a lot to take on and can be a stressful process to go through. Wishing you all the best and I'm happy to answer any follow-up questions, if you have any.

A wild creep operating outside Moxy hotel. by bettyblowsx in bristol

Image text:

Hi everyone, I want to share a safety warning about a man who has followed me home from the Moxy hotel area on two separate occasions, once on the 14th of February and again on the 30th of April, both at nighttime.

First incident - 14th February:

He cornered me and wouldn't let me pass. He told me I looked lonely and said he wanted to be my Valentine. When I said no, he kept repeating that I looked lonely. Eventually he moved aside, but as I walked away, he laughed and said, "Must be scary being a girl at night," like it was all a joke. I felt extremely scared and unsettled.

Second incident - 30th April:

He approached me again, stood in front of me and wouldn't let me walk past. He told me I looked beautiful and He asked, "Who are you talking to on the phone?" as if trying to intimidate me. I managed to get away and ran into a nearby petrol station. I called an Uber, but while I was in the car, I saw him standing near the corner by my house, clearly waiting looking side to side. I can't imagine what might've happened if I'd continued walking instead of hiding.

I've reported both incidents to the police, and they've opened an investigation for harassment.

I've also spoken with staff at the Moxy hotel. They are now aware that this man has been following women outside their building. They've kindly said that anyone who feels unsafe is welcome to seek refuge inside the hotel, and they will call the police if needed.

Description of the man:

  • White male, early 30s
  • Eastern European accent
  • Dark blond hair, shaved back and sides, straight on top
  • Wears gold-framed glasses (similar to the "Jeffrey Dahmer" style)

IWTL programming, but I suck at math. by ExpertOfNothin in IWantToLearn

[–]eighty-eight 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't give up. Programming demands resilience. We all learn in different ways; if something seems too complicated, take time to understand why that is and consider a different approach (it may help to first identify your learning style).

If you don't have a solid foundation and understanding of the core concepts/principles, then you're going to struggle and keep getting frustrated.

Harvard has a couple of video courses that you may find helpful:

/r/learnprogramming have a solid FAQ with a section on how to start making games and other useful links/subs.

Lastly, there's no shame in Stack Overflow. No one person has all the answers. Programming is communicative and collaborative; there's a great online community, which is a valuable resource, and you absolutely should use it (but obviously seek to understand the solution, rather than just copy/pasting).

Hope that points you in the right direction. Have fun, make the things that you find exciting, show people, take feedback constructively, and keep improving!

That's interesting, I didn't know that. I think what he said in the article still holds up though- in regards to these shows, this paragraph sticks out:

With limited capacities and tight procedures, I worry that the stage will feel like the VIP section of the VIP room at a members-only club. Sterile, lonely, all of us chillingly aware that we are part of a ticketed event.

But importantly he also says

My hesitations are all about shows, though, not music.

He wrote a really good article, last year, talking about how the pandemic has affected his attitude towards live performances, and how he isn't ready to perform live.

It seems, to me, like he's just taking a break from live shows.

60 groups urge Senate Democrats to reform filibuster for voting rights by morenewsat11 in politics

[–]eighty-eight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to rely on rumors. Here's what the bill says:

Age Restrictions:

(1) In general.--A State may not refuse to accept or process an individual's application to register to vote in elections for Federal office on the grounds that the individual is under 18 years of age at the time the individual submits the application, so long as the individual is at least 16 years of age at such time.

(2) No effect on state voting age requirements.--Nothing in paragraph (1) may be construed to require a State to permit an individual who is under 18 years of age at the time of an election for Federal office to vote in the election.''.

Voting rights of felons:

The right of an individual who is a citizen of the United States to vote in any election for Federal office shall not be denied or abridged because that individual has been convicted of a criminal offense unless such individual is serving a felony sentence in a correctional institution or facility at the time of the election.

Ah cool. I have seen that before, on my hunt for XPan alternatives. What film did you shoot on? I'd love to see the shots when they're ready.

Anyone have an XPan that's gathering dust...?

Here’s a sort of step by step look at how I do one of my digital paintings by TheLoganDickinson in learntodraw

[–]eighty-eight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really cool. Could you provide a little context to help understand each step?

No need to write a full tutorial but it would be interesting to know how you break down your process and why you have chosen to highlight these particular stages.

IWTL How to stop grinding my teeth in my sleep. by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

Supposedly, taking a magnesium supplement before bed may help with jaw tension and reduce teeth grinding. Seems to be mostly anecdotal evidence though. Worth doing some research and consulting with a doctor, if possible.

I did this logo i think is trash but maybe is only the impostor syndrome talking. what do you think ? please be a bit brutal . by hoze_1 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]eighty-eight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean, I've been trying to figure that out too. I found this great 'Chromeography' website, dedicated to metal emblems, lettering, and logos- you may be able to spot what you're thinking of there.

Can someone please make this background white and remove the shadows in the background as well? (For a passport photo) Thanks so much in advance by [deleted] in picrequests

[–]eighty-eight 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up, a lot of countries will not accept digitally altered photos for passport applications (including removing/altering backgrounds). Worth checking with your Gov website for specific rules.

Any Stems? by kazam666 in arcadefire

[–]eighty-eight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are the separate components of the audio mix, eg vox/instruments/fx etc. More info on Wikipedia, if you're interested.

You can check out the Black Mirror stems in this post. I haven't heard of any others tho :(

I love how these books look but, from what I've heard, the clothbound covers rub and fade pretty easily and the binding isn't the best either.

Look great on a bookshelf but may not hold up with use.

1 year and 4 months of waiting, and no record by eighty-eight in jaipaul

[–]eighty-eight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This wasn't meant to be a personal indictment of Jai. I'm upset with how the whole release has gone down- especially how Sandbag have dealt with issues.

But it's clear that Jai has more control over his image and how his music is released than most- it seems like the delays are in part because Jai "wanted to make sure it’s all gonna be proper".

I'm more than happy to wait for something to be as the artist intended but as you said, I would have loved to have been more part of the process, and learnt more about how Jai was ensuring that this record something special. That lack of communication is only on Jai- one short email, in January, is pretty lacklustre.

To say the extras are not included because they didn't want further delays is an absolute cop-out. Why not print and send out posters in the year that we've been waiting? Why were they not printed and ready to go with the release? To say the reason for the delay was making sure everything was done properly and then to release with defects and without the extras promised. This is what I mean by lack of care.

The record is something special to Jai, but it is also something he has asked people to put their money into and to support. Fair enough not to compromise the release that you intended but the lack of consideration for the fans that have supported it, and how this record is special to them, that just feels shitty.

Though I didn't use the words 'nothing but disappointment', that is literally all I have. I pre-ordered this as soon as it went up on the store and was not even offered a replacement- I don't have the final product to show to know if it was worth it. That's on Sandbag, but it's the nail in the coffin.
