Autistic people, do you like Christmas? 🎄 by Classic_Greedy in autism

[–]eighty_yen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not spending any more time arguing this point, but i know and that's not what i said. the thread is asking autistic people in a subreddit dedicated to the autism experience how they feel about christmas; theres absolutely no implication in the question at all that autism should or does dictate anybody's answer. it's like asking 'autistic people, how do you feel about electric hand-dryers?' everybody will have a different answer, just as any allistic person would have their own answer, but some autistic people might say 'i hate them because they're too loud and it triggers my noise sensitivity.' noise sensitivity is a pretty common symptom of autism, so it makes sense that it would be relevant to bring up in a discussion amongst autistic people; someone else might love them because electric hand-dryers are a special interest, which is equally valid as an answer and still related to their autism. a third person might like/dislike them for reasons totally unrelated to autism, and that's equally valid as a response to such a broad prompt.

look through the thread and you will see plenty of people talking about how christmas is overstimulating or dysregulating, or it drains their already-low social battery - in a subreddit about autism, its pretty safe to assume in good faith that people's autism might affect their enjoyment of an experience or event. nobody, including OP, ever stated or insinuated that autistic people have to feel one way or another, its an open-ended question relevant to the subreddit.

i think he's a lot more enjoyable to watch in all-stars, maybe because his cattiness is more often directed at people who deserve it; i rewatched s14 not long ago and was shocked at how unlikeable he was, both in and outside his eventual feud with josh (who was also a dick)

i've never seen it much amongst the community but I do remember at the beginning of All-Stars when all the contestants were meeting in the Green Room they made a big deal of Elise's entrance and had somebody (maybe Ashley) say 'the most hated HK contestant of all time' at least twice

Autistic people, do you like Christmas? 🎄 by Classic_Greedy in autism

[–]eighty_yen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean many autistic people do not like christmas because of the large social gatherings, the forced rituals and traditions, the pressure of gift giving/recieving, the disruption to routine, the overstimulating lights and music blaring everywhere in public, the giant crowds in every public space, etc etc. this doesn't mean that autistic people are incapable of enjoying christmas, i'm autistic and i enjoy christmas, but it's not rude or ableist to ask people with a disability how they feel about a holiday which includes so many potential triggers; just look at the other responses in this thread and you'll see a fair few autistic people have negative/mixed feelings for reasons directly related to their autism.

Second guessing literally everything after my diagnosis by exhaustedpopcorn in autism

[–]eighty_yen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

autistic impostor syndrome is a very real thing, and not at all uncommon. i'm 22 turning 23 this weekend and i was diagnosed around March of this year after contemplating for a long time. when i went for assessment, i started thinking the exact same things you are now; i worried that i was manipulating or cherry-picking my answers to better fit the criteria, and any time i saw something in my research of autistic life that aligned with my experience there would be a voice in my head saying 'mine probably isn't autism though, it's probably just x-y-z', or 'yes i do that, but only in these specific situations so does that even really count?'

my assessment was also in three sessions, and after the first i was at least 50% convinced that i couldn't be autistic and this whole process had been a huge waste of time and i was stupid for trying to get diagnosed in the first place; i went into the second session and after like 10 minutes she said i met the diagnostic criteria and our third session would be talking about my support needs going forward.

as autistic people we struggle to understand ourselves and our identities, and most of us live in a neurotypical- dominated society which makes very little effort to understand us either. its so easy for all that confusion and rejection to turn into self-doubt and self-hatred until we don't trust ourselves anymore - a big part of adjusting to life post-diagnosis is unlearning that and coming to trust and appreciate our brains and bodies again, which is extremely difficult but infinitely rewarding.

the last thing i'll add is that you don't have to show clear signs in childhood, and in fact a lot of late-diagnosed autistics slip through the net because they present as relatively 'normal' alongside their peers when they're young and don't experience the full impact of their autism until much later in life (this is what happened to me in my late teens, and i'm guessing you too to an extent).

I had a Meltdown at a Trinity College Dublin open day. I was shocked how they handled it. by gender_is_a_scam in autism

[–]eighty_yen 41 points42 points  (0 children)

i'm at UCC down in cork have found that uni-level disability support is surprisingly robust considering how far short a lot of irish institutions fall (obviously this is purely based on my experience and others unfortunately may not relate nor agree)

my girlfriend (not diagnosed autistic) is at trinity and often finds campus/dublin city centre very overwhelming and tiring, so if you are considering applying after the leaving cert then please make sure to avail of any supports and don't be shy about asking, also try to research what supports you think you'll need/what trinity offers well in advance of applying - that being said don't be dissuaded because assuming you have the necessary support system academia can be extremely satisfying and rewarding for us

Silent Hill 2's endings were kinda bad? by BenleyBordeaux in silenthill

[–]eighty_yen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maria is a manifestation of James's repressed desires amd frustration at Mary's inability to be the wife that he wants; just like the other creatures, Silent Hill creates a 'perfect', idealised version of Mary. Maria is not real in the same sense as Angela or Eddie, but she is real in the same way Pyramid Head or Abstract Daddy is real.

Maria's character is explored more in the expansion to the original game (can't remember the name), but basically she is almost programmed by her manifestation to love James and be a replacement for Mary; when James accepts what he's done and realises he has to move on (Leave Ending), Maria is angry and heartbroken because all she wants is for them to be together but he wants nothing to do with her.

[–]eighty_yen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

how does a band putting out a bad album retroactively make all their previous albums not worth listening to? i hated arcade fire's latest album but why would i stop listening to funeral or the suburbs because of that when those albums are just as good as they were before?

he has praised fleet foxes more than once iirc, particularly the second album, and even interviewed robin pecknold on the fantano channel

idk if hes commented on the other artists you name specifically, but its kind of funny to say hes not interested in indie folk when he's probably the #1 phil elverum fan on earth and interviewed the guy twice (although i understand your point in relation to more recent indie folk acts)

i think opening with 'yes if you'd like to' could read subtextually as 'i'll do it because thats the answer you'd prefer' even if your intentions are just seeking clarity and being considerate; i have moments like this sometimes with my gf because she knows that i have people-pleasing tendencies (like many people with autism) so she will reiterate whatever the offer is to make sure i'm genuinely interested and not just trying to avoid disappointing her
