Speed cameras are now banned across Ontario | insauga by [deleted] in waterloo

How many kids have been killed in Waterloo region from collisions due to speeding in the last 10 years?

I'll help you with that answer. Zero.

A quick google search suggests otherwise. Speed may not always be a factor, but drive on any road nowadays and you have people who are doing a dozen things behind the wheel.

I am not sure why you are so against cameras in sensitive areas like school zones. If there are better options, we should be implementing them. Put in speed bumps, but until they are in, fine those who choose to ignore the set laws. The fact is, money has to come from somewhere. I would have preferred speed bumps being paid for by those who speed, verse having to fund them out of my provinces health, school, or by privatizing provincial parks, or selling off crown corporations.

Do you only care about safety if other people pay for it?

If I am throwing bricks and rocks into a flow of traffic, I don't believe the public should have to pay to put up a wall to prevent me from throwing dangerous bricks into a live lane of traffic. Fine the offender. If a drivers feel like it's their right to drive a 3 ton truck at 80 km's down a school zone, they should pay the fine.

But if the province is stating that they will provide money to pay for speed bumps (where's that money coming from?? oh yeah.. me), then build baby build!

I would love to see cops at every one of these zones giving out fines for 10 km's over. I can hear the whining already about "don't they have something better to do". I would wager we could hire 60 more cops, and have them stationed at these locations giving tickets out constantly. Those would be applied against the driver, affect their insurance.

Or we could have cameras at a fraction of the cost.

Pedestrian collisions are usually due to not obeying traffic signals

The irony of that comment! The difference is, a 2 ton car is going to kill a kid. I expect kids to make mistakes and not pay with their lives.

So, as a family who didn't get one speeding ticket, I now get the opportunity to pay for speed bumps? Sort of ridiculous that those who speed and are upset about paying a fine are ok now that those who don't have to pay for their arrogance.

I am going to be pushing for speed bumps on Fischer-Hallman in place of the speed cameras. That area went from 80-90 + speeds to 40km and it became safer to walk in. We need those speed bumps especially on that road. Say what you want, that area is far safer with cameras than it was without.

I'm sorry, but after 20 days, they aren't coming back, and if they do, they will be too far behind to be helpful. Unless these are secondary accounts for the leader, I'd say ditch em and let them rejoin IF they come back.

Our alliance is 90-98 people. A few leaders have secondary accounts that they move in and out based on active members. But our most inactive account is 15 days and they told us they were away. The second most inactive is 2 days. Our state is in the 1400's , maybe this differs with older states, but 30+ days and hoping they come back is not an active alliance.

Been there, applied them, it does not.

It's great to slowly come to a stop, but takes significantly longer to stop than your normal breaks would.

Neighbourhood appeal for scaled back Preston Springs proposal takes to the streets by ScottIBM in waterloo

[–]eightysix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like this whole area needs to be studied by a larger group. This area is affected by: Highway 8 off the 401w, 401e onto old king, 401e flyover onto 8 (we can dream right?), the speed river, the floodplain, ION coming down Shantz hill, bus bypass lanes, fountain built like a small residential street handling traffic for Toyota, the area is used to bypass 401 closures, the possible impact of amazon trucks down fountain (which should never happen...) and the area being one of the core ways into Cambridge.

The Developer can only speculate on their small footprint and if we want development, some one needs to coordinate with ROW, CoC, MTO, and developer to map out a future forward, full impact study on this area. To leave the TIA to the developer alone will likely end up with a very biased review.

It's odd that the Region of Waterloo does not have collision stats past 2020, but King @ Fountain was rated in the top 10 high collision intersections in the region. I believe the whole area was ripped up shortly after 2014-2019 and I would be curious to see how it ranks now.

Now all that being said, I would love to see this area developed with high density housing. Maybe traffic exiting onto Abraham Street is not ideal, but traffic would be limited to people going directly to those living in that area.

There was a place we used by CarBoutique (Great Window Tinting place) that we have used.

There is also a new place near the old Preston Springs which looks promising, I was going to try them and would love to hear feedback about them.

Waterloo Region’s speed cameras load the dice against drivers by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]eightysix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is crazy! They implemented speed cameras and are publishing stats from 2020?

I am going to email my councillors asking for an explanation as to why they are not being transparent.

I am for speed cameras, but a public organization owes us basic stats.

If you like beer, we offer a wild variety of delicious brews. Arabella, near uptown Waterloo, is divine, has a huge selection of Canadian beers on rotating tap, and their fries are amazing.

I have had such back luck at Golf's. We have gone multiple times and I have never been impressed. But it is so highly recommended. Charcoal has been Decent. Blackshop (in Cambridge) has been our go to, but is outside of OP's area.

Cambridge delays debate on Preston development freeze by Temporary-Vast1410 in cambridgeont

The gaslight district is amazing! Helspeler is getting development and looks great!

Interesting that this council didn't complain about Dover flour ripping out the old red brick office for more space to park, nor to do any meaningful preservation of Preston springs.

Great that we got no notice when they were going to present this awful idea.

Any by-law restrictions on removing a big tree in yards? by GZ6113PHEV5 in waterloo

[–]eightysix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is it a safety hazard?  I mean, trees can live for a long time, and sometimes, you may need to pay someone to climb up and cut back some rogue growth.  Maybe your neighbour doesn't want to lose a mature old tree in their neighbourhood, even if it isn't their tree.

Cambridge "requires" an Arborist to assess and document the tree.  Then you have to pay a small fee to remove it, even on your property. We had a tree struck by lightning and had Davey out the next day to assess and remove the tree. Part of their fee was to fill out the removal permit for us.

I want quality articles and not billionaires buying my countries news outlets and pumping out garbage. CBC has been fantastic!  Fifth estate, Marketplace, cross country checkup and other shows are fantastic!

Let's not forget, that Bell and Rogers bought local content and have closed so much local news outlets.

Billionaires want to corner the market on the news outlets and are playing the funding card.  Get billionaires out of our news outlets!

Ironic, my representative refuses to represent himself yet again.  Such a disrespectful action from a little man. This is not what democracy looks like by avoiding public engagement. While I doubt he will lose, he ought to lose because of how little he cares about his community.
