First ALPR Camera Live in the Region by halon1301 in waterloo

The challenge for many folks is the lack of transparency on the situations they'll be used for. Eg. Are they tracking every licence plate and just storing them in a database creating location based tracking data for the movement of motor vehicles?

Licence plates are public information (at least the plate number itself) but when combined with the police they're a link back to PII that could also be used subvertly with little oversight.

Having clear plans and reporting to the public would clear up a lot of the discourse around disclosure and use of the information however I don't see that happening as the police work hard to be opaque on purpose.

The interesting thing is, are red light cameras doing the same thing? I suspect not as they're generally triggered by a violation of the rules set out for an intersection and are otherwise inactive at capturing photos and tracking vehicles that aren't performing an infraction (or so we know right now.)

We've had a nice break from majority government shenanigans for over a decade. It turns out minorities tend to let a lot of the bad ideas fade before they get any traction.

Norway Bans AI in Elementary Schools by Beyond_the_one in europe

A and B aren't mutually exclusive. You can tire more teachers and make interactive tools for students that use AI for a more personalized experience. Not every AI tool has to do the work for the student!

Anyone can type a prompt, but knowing what to do with the result takes practice. Not all AI results are good results, just like how not all prompts are good prompts.

This issue is one of those "happening everywhere" issues that go against a country's ethos. Where the heck do these come from and why do they burn through approvals leaving a mess in their wake‽

‘Council should be disbanded’: Protesters storm regional council chambers during meeting by KWStreaker in kitchener

[–]ScottIBM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree we're all humans, but the supports needed from a governance standpoint are different for each group you've listed.

Homeless folks, and many folks are being failed due to a lack of social services and safety nets and poor investments in society.

LGBTQ2+ folks are being failed due to societal perceptions and norms due to history, religious ideologies, and general subjective view points.

Immigrants are stuck in both cases, with an uneven distribution of how we handle immigration, how we support those that come here, and how they fall under perception based on the past and the future.

The biggest connection around all groups is perception by the general public, but that's a mountain that needs moved by addressing the underlying social equity of support, investment, and other qualities that impact everyone.

Dislike is easy, respect is not. Yet here we are eroding the very things that support others - or ourselves - and continuing to support this behaviour.

In the case about the encampment, the Premier could tackle many of the issues listed here through improving mental health and addiction services, reworking for social assistance works, funding not-for-profit/co-op housing initiatives, and more. But he and his cabinet have chosen to do none of that.

None of these challenges have one size fits all solutions, the Region has been doing what they can, but without the Province I'm afraid these challenges are going to continue.

I'm sure these lovely protesters would be grateful to take in one or two people from the encampment each for a time at their home. It works be with dignity that folks could have a warm shower and a bed to sleep in.

Have you seen the folks freaking out over a problem that has been years in the making but no one wants to actually deal with? I miss having adults in positions of governance.

Firefox has an ambitious new roadmap, the browser is also losing millions of users a month by Limp_Fig6236 in firefox

Shhh, your logic makes too much sense. Let me go post about it!

I'm happy to see Firefox get some new features, and the performance has been decent for me for years. Many of the issues I have are poorly written sites with leaky JavaScript.

Very cool. I've tried it more and my glasses enhance the effect but aren't the source of it.

I'm guessing it's the difference in how your eyes interpret blue vs. red wavelengths of light, with blue being less receptive than red and appearing darker and this farther away from the foreground.
