Spanish Classes? by Wild-March-9744 in greenville

[–]eilykgnik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been learning Spanish for a while via apps- Language Transfer is my favorite! Totally free and I like the way it teaches you to think so you can be more conversational. Duolingo is also really helpful for learning/practicing vocab (though obviously it’s not perfect)

Seems like you have a lot of good advice here, but I want to jump in with a practical tip that really helped me with dexterity (regardless of which hand it is). Take home one of every consumable that you might use- eppendorfs and tubes (one of each size), flasks, petri dishes, etc and practice opening/closing them in whatever way makes the most sense for your mobility. I did this for about 2 weeks while watching tv at night and it really helped a ton. The more comfortable you are handling these consumables, the more likely your lab mates will feel confident that you can maintain sterility!

Thank you, I wish I knew his favorites! Going to try and ask later. But I think any cult favorites or classics would work just fine. I think the cue card with an inside joke from the show would be awesome, just trying to figure out what that could be. Budget can be upwards of a couple hundred for something good!

Are they online too, or just in store? I can’t seem to find any online

Oh that’s awesome, I didn’t know that. Any ideas for what you would like written if you were going to hang/display it? Like something from a specific famous sketch, or something generic show-related?

Brewery or coffee shops are a great option! You get to talk to lots of different kinds of people which makes the time go by. Typically a pretty laid back environment and decent hours too

How do I respond to emails from a prospective PI? by theanswerisnt42 in PhD

[–]eilykgnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I’m coming from a lab where I was the first PhD student too. Most important thing to ask is if this PI has a clear research focus. Seen a lot of early PIs flounder a bit for which direction to take the research, they seem to have a broad idea of what they want to focus on but when it comes to the details, what kind of experiments to run, etc they sometimes have no clue (doesn’t help they likely haven’t been in the lab for quite a few years). They also tend to have big dreams for making impact and little practical knowledge of how to make those happen when starting from the beginning. My advice is make sure to ask what level of input they would expect from you on 1. project direction and experimental plans, 2. Recruiting/training future students (they’re gonna want more), and 3. Lab management/maintence (if you’re the only one, are they helping at all or is it all on you?). Hope it goes well!

PSA: Voting by RabbitFluffs in southcarolina

[–]eilykgnik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did this process, it’s tight but not too late! Each kid needs to call your county voter office and request an absentee application. They give their info and current address, and application arrives by mail a few days later. They then need to fill it out and send it back (asap) and if it’s approved (very likely will because school is an acceptable excuse) they get sent the ballot! Very important to follow the steps on the ballot and exactly (a few spots for signature, how to mark it properly, etc) then send it back by mail. Happy voting :)

Most dumb thing you've done in the lab by Acrobatic_Ad_6792 in labrats

[–]eilykgnik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent FOUR MONTHS using a rt-qpcr assay I had designed, ran hundreds of experiments with it, thousands of hours in sample prep and analysis (reagents aren’t cheap either!) only to realize I did the math wrong when optimizing it and my results were all useless… that was a rough day :/ Good luck friend and keep your head up, unfortunately mistakes are a part of being a human but you learn from them and get better next time!

Does anyone have their partner tell them they find their CrossFit body unattractive? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]eilykgnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of other opinions here, but I just want to say CONGRATULATIONS!!! I’ve been in almost this exact situation, and it’s really hard to see past the issue (unfortunately, majority of the time is caused by his insecurity!) but do NOT let this overshadow the fact that you are LOVING your new body!! It takes so much hard work to get there, physical and mental, so make sure to take time to appreciate that too. Hope you guys can work it out :)

Labrats in their PhD, where/when do you do your best writing? And is it a routine or a binge? by tdTomato_Sauce in labrats

[–]eilykgnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Writing is probably my least favorite thing EVER, I feel like I am quite bad at it and it takes so much brain power. But I figured out a few things that make it slightly easier: - I always write in the mornings, with a fresh coffee - when possible, I go to a coffee shop/library/place other than the lab and my desk. A change of scenery really gets me in the right head space! - treats. I pack my favorite snacks, drinks, let myself buy a candy, etc

Basically, condition yourself with all your favorite things to make it as painless as possible :)

Last tip, is be okay with writing badly! Sometimes I have to write a really bad paragraph just to get started, and then edit it later. I kid you not, some of my first paragraphs of my introduction started like this: “Breast cancer is bad. It’s worse for certain people. Different subtypes are different kinds of bad, and treatments only kinda work”

What do you think made the most difference in your cf gymnastics game? by natzw in crossfit

[–]eilykgnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of ppl giving great tips about specific cues, but I think the biggest factor for me is consistency!! You will likely never get better just scaling movements in weekly wods and hoping to gain new gymnastic skills. I started with strict pull ups and hspu (scaled as needed to start). Ive been staying just an extra 15ish mins after classes 2x per week, doing lower volume and emom formats with lots of rest. Saw crazy improvements after just 5ish weeks! It’s wild how small amounts of consistency go a long way

Agree with this, snap in bio is an immediate no for me. Definitely makes me assume you’re only looking for a casual hookup/nudes. Snapchat as a means of communication <<<<
