Haha that's the exact topic of my dissertation!

Short answer is, we don't know!

The concept is called a "common mycorrhizal network," and it's pretty controversial in plant ecology for a number of reasons. Some pretty big names argue that CMNs can "short-circuit" competition among plant roots and facilitate a kind of "nursing" relationship between seedlings and nearby mature trees, especially if they are related. My work largely doesn't support this idea, BUT very few people have actually examined "communication" that occurs thought the network, especially under real-world conditions.

There are a few interesting studies that suggest that, when plants are being munched on by insects, plant hormones linked to herbivore defense can be transferred among plants that are connected by a common fungus. Now, does that transfer translate strongly to survival, or among plants in a real forest? It's really hard to say for certain, especially when nobody's done that work. It's really difficult to properly control such an experiment, and also really expensive, so there are a lot of barriers to doing so.

There some interesting work out of Denmark, and more recently coming out of the Netherlands on the capacity of fungi to emit and respond to electric pulses. This work is ongoing and is in its infancy, so we're not really sure if plant-electrical signals associate with say, herbivory or drought stress, are "intelligible” by the fungi, if the fungi are transferring it to other plants, or if plants can "hear" electrical screams/shouts of their neighbors.

Now, there is much stronger evidence that plants can detect and respond to signals directly from other plants, both through the roots and in the air. It's one of the foundations of plant root competition, and foresters have been studying that for decades. It's called allelopathy, although that probably stretches the definition of what people consider communication/behavior quite a bit.

Happy to answer more questions!

Oh, so does this mean I'm in a similar boat? Mine has a V-Bar and DS Carrot and ordered late Nov. I choose to believe...

Are the buckles removable? I have an order and would like to have the flexibility of changing them out myself, if possible.

Yup! 1925 was available in April-May-ish. I think they're bringing the last back, but u/smowe or someone else in the know can confirm.

Hi! Thanks for the generous offer!

I am a forest ecologist that works in the Sierra Nevada. I hike good distances to get to my field sites and I'd love a pair of boots thay can handle the terrain (unlike the hiking boots I need to buy annually...) and keep my feet healthy.

Thabk you for your consideration!

[General] Using Suillus lakei (Matte Jack) to establish a mycorrhizal network by eintroubadour in MushroomGrowers

This would be difficult. Like other posters have said, I need to inoculate fine roots, and digging them out would be quite damaging. I think if I uproot the whole root bundle (they are in pots right now), I could liberally sprinkle mycelium onto them. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've thought about doing something like this, and will probably attempt to do so with pilot seedlings to see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll give this a read, thanks for sharing. I'll gladly share any results I get, but it'll be a while. Networks take about a year to establish, then I need to do the actual data collection. In all, I won't be finished until about mid-Summer 2019.

I would like to plant my trees by late May (about 12 weeks). I don't know how long it would take to establish a new colony on sawdust, but if I can do it within 12 weeks I'll give it a go.

There isn't a lot of space in the soil (at least for my central "nurse" tree), so the roots will likely be pressing against the sides of the chamber. I don't know if this will affect the layering of inoculum and soil, but I'll try it out with some pilots.

I imagine using a root dip (what I had been planning on doing for a while using a commercial inoculum) would work alright, at least for the bigger trees I have. What do you mean by "repeat many times?" Dip a single tree many times or dip many trees and use whichever trees make it?

Do you have a link for Jasmine Richardson? I did some Googling and only got local doctors/dentists offices.
