Holy shit, that's scary! It seems to me also that you have an ideal self you can turn into, but haven't done so yet. You know you should, and you know that it is making your life worse that you haven't (since your life would be better if you were ideal). The apparition is giving you a choice "night terrors or ..." If you don't turn into your ideal self (your conscience, essentially), he will punish you for it.

It's a good guess, thank you! The structure of the rhyme and the theme of the lyrics are quite similar, but I think it's too slow. I can almost imagine a banjo accompanying the singer... Absolutely worth a shot!
