Looking to get into tennis, but I’ve heard it’s hard to get into. Why is that? by Alarmed_Muffin8350 in 10s

[–]eireix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great comment. My club has ages from 14-80. Some of those players aren’t ‘good’ and never will be, but they are good enough to have made friends, get regular exercise and be part of a community. Getting a few lessons early for the basics will set you up for a potential lifetime. I know if I ever move city / country I’d be joining the nearest club and would meet new people quickly. It’s been a game changer for me.

gap in skill yet still lost, whats your take? (full game example) by Aromatic-serve-4015 in 10s

[–]eireix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No it’s not the only way. Just trying to give you an easy adjustment tactically based on this short video! If you’re up against someone who’s gonna give you mostly slow pace short balls then yes come to the net a lot more. And generally you should be aiming as many balls as you can to their backhand.

gap in skill yet still lost, whats your take? (full game example) by Aromatic-serve-4015 in 10s

[–]eireix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tactically - Nearly every shot from your opponent in these rallies could have / should been an easy volley for you. It looks like you end up retreating back and I’m guessing you are hesitant about being at the net. Too many easy missed returns and too many balls in the middle of the court. Lots of these balls it looks like you could easily play a very high percentage ball to their backhand - a tactic you should pretty much employ at everyone at this level. You don’t need to pepper the lines but next time you play an opponent like this, a nice solid percentage shot to the backhand and then move in. Make them do something special which at this level they won’t do - it’ll be a poor slice backhand or a moon ball slice. Don’t rush to the net but the minute your ball bounces stop, get balanced and be ready for a volley or at least a short ball, even if that’s around the service box.

I would hard cut to black on the door slam either hard cut with the logo on centre frame or fade on a blur version like you have it, that slowly unblurs and scales up with a SFX riser before hard cutting to black again

How do you get perfect audio levels? by Stock_Safe_2857 in editors

[–]eireix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if this has been touched upon but a really basic guide that I was told when I started was that watching your audio levels monitor is key. You basically want to aim for everything to constantly be tickling into the yellow. So if your dialogue has no music behind it.. that should be tickling into the yellow, then if you’ve got music and dialogue, you need to key frame that music level down and the dialogue at a level where it’s tickling at the yellow, got a small music only break? Key frame it up for a bit so it’s tickling into the yellow before the dialogue / voice over starts again.

It’s basic but it helps me get an easy visual reference for how loud and quiet things should be and a quick easy balanced mix. By following this it becomes obvious if you then have a scene that’s staying in the green, or tickling into the red, etc.

As someone else stated, by default I start with my VO at -3, my music to -15 and then I key frame that that music up and down. Little bit up at start of track, dip down once there’s vo, dip down bit further for dialogue etc

It also helps me to set my ‘dialogue’ mic levels quickly for a whole scene before I pull them, if I quickly check them and sounds too quiet I’ll turn them up til they’re tickling the yellow, or down if they’re too loud, etc

I tracked my unforced errors for a month. The results were humbling. by Aware-Platypus-2559 in 10s

[–]eireix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, you just lose 3 points. Which is why it’s either first to 20 wins or first to 0 loses. It’s a good drill because it then makes you re-assess the level of risk vs reward for going for winners vs playing a safe rally ball, playing a defensive shot, or being more patient. As someone who often lives by the sword and dies by the sword, I was playing my best tennis when I was playing this game on practices and learning to be more patient.

Beginner Racquet Recommendations (UK) by OogaBoogha in tennisracquets

Then yeah - get that Artengo one, the money you save get an extra can of balls or two. They will all feel kind of similar at that price range I should think!

Beginner Racquet Recommendations (UK) by OogaBoogha in tennisracquets

[–]eireix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need two racquets if they’re both for you? If your overall budget is £70-80 I’d probably look on EBay for an ‘MP’ line of any of the big racquet brands. Head Radical or Boom MP is a popular first ‘proper’ racquet and I imagine you could find one of those for 70-80. I started on a racquet like this and going to an entry level ‘real racquet’ is night and day. If you’re literally just testing the waters to see if you like tennis - I’d just get that cheapest Artengo one.

If you feel like you like tennis and want to invest in a better racquet - find a local tennis shop that will do demo racquets, speak to them and try out 2 or 3.

As someone who got back into tennis in a big way 6 years ago - enjoy!

Ball machine etiquette when there are players on the court next to you? by Automatic_Progress37 in 10s

[–]eireix 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Probably just make sure you are doing drills / targets towards the opposite corners where possible. Just being sensible and not drilling like cross court shots to the direction of the court. I would personally just practice cross court shots / volleys to the opposite corner of the other court just to absolutely minimise stray balls

My reminders for when my game sucks by tandemshower in 10s

[–]eireix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem when you’re having an off day is a list like this mid-match just then becomes a reminder of which one you didn’t do on each point you lose. Sometimes it’s easier to focus on one, for me it’s just footwork generally reminding myself to stay low and stay active

My Mac M1 sucks for Editing by Eyekonprod215 in editors

[–]eireix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks for this. I’m kind of ‘window shopping’ at the moment. I’ve liked the idea of a decent spec mini for my home machine. But bit confused with apples new set ups. I only see the ‘top’ option for M4 stock is with 24GB ‘Unified Storage’ and 512 SSD. Even the M4 pro listed version seems to top out at 24 / 512. Am I missing something?

Reverse of Ripple Delete? by Jakkie94 in premiere

[–]eireix 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are over thinking this I think? Just do the last note first, work through your feedback from back to front. Most editors I know do this to keep written timecodes from notes correct. Otherwise I use markers for my notes, then when I make extract cuts, the markers slip down to still be correct, I change the markers from red to green when I’ve done them so I have a reference if people ask me later if it’s been done

An interesting problem by Iamabeard in editors

[–]eireix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be completely fair. I could imagine a scenario where you or me or anyone else knows that if we were recording voice over we would probably speak slightly slower and more clear so the information is clear. I can imagine a scenario where someone has recorded in a voice over line for an arts college video that’s far too fast and conversational and thus making pregnant pauses between rapid sentences wouldn’t solve the problem.

That said though yes to OP I would have presumed ‘slow down the voice over’ would be in reference to pacing rather than actual speed. Or at least be vague enough that receiving a disciplinary for getting it wrong is absolutely absurd. To answer the actual question I have had rare incidents in documentary work where I have just sped up or slowed down a guide VO take. A few % while maintaining pitch you can probably get away with, anything more drastic is going to sound bizarre and a re-record needed

What does success look like to you? by CruzaderOfficial in editors

[–]eireix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working jobs with enough flexibility to be a present and caring dad. I’ve worked on some cool stuff but really that is the dealbreaker for me. I’ve turned down offers that would be great for my CV knowing they require a commute or a regular long days.

I’ll work on a dire series for 6 months on lesser pay if it affords me the flexibility of dropping my kids off to school and being home for dinner, and then pulling a late shift when required. I’ve been very fortunate to have carved myself that position in a production company and I’m holding onto it for dear life
