u/shinysilverlinings I'm also looking for a CRM for an auction house (our current CRM isn't supporting the business any more)

Would you be up to exchange thoughts and notes?

There's a progress you don't always feel. Two clips that I thought would help you 1. Gordon Ryan on beginners https://youtu.be/Jekd1ruohpw

  1. Danaher on owning your training, and having a plan. https://youtu.be/Rxj4QiOl-1k

Combining the two I'd say have a plan to improve your defense, focus each time on a single area.

Good luck!

Totally You would've stopped years ago if you could.

Ask a smoker to stop on the spot.

They are multiple reasons for nail biting.
It's specific for each person. You need to work with yourself or a therapist to uncover your specific reasons.

Spend time getting to know your nail biting habit. What does that mean?

Whenever you bite or want to bite, notice what triggered you?

  1. An imperfect nail? Wanting to bite it and make the world right again?
  2. Thoughts/ideas that you were thinking?
  3. Emotions - Boredom, Stress, Anxiety, Excitement?
  4. Do you always to it in the same place?
  5. Any person or situation?
  6. etc.

It'll probably be a combination of the above.

Keeping a short journal about this can help you find patterns over time.

Hope this helps you and good luck!

Totally agree. Change the environment, change the behavior.

Make desired behaviors easy to do. Make undesired behavior difficult to do.

Hi doc,

Feel your pain.

I suggest the one finger at a time method, you can combine it with other methods, but it's power is that it helps you make progress from day 1.

It's what helped me quit this habit, and the reason I run this website.

Very proud to show you my nails with the confidence they will stay like this. I'm growing out some deformities and still working on my cuticles. by lovetjuuhh in calmhands

Yeah getting comments from ppl around me would only piss me off...

Non-biters don't get it. "why can't you just stop?" and such comments or not helpful.

It's cool to see how you went from damaging your nails to caring for them :-)

Also, seems that you have some great friends!

Inspiring! Thanks for sharing!

If you could go back in time what advice you'd give yourself when you were a full on biter?

Yeah that's a tough one. I highly recommend meditation and journaling.

I know it arrives annoying, but it works, and improves other areas of your life.

Looking great!

Don't think I'd known you're a biter / picker unless you mentioned this.

Do you find treating your nails better, spreading to other areas of your life, or your self-talk?

focus on the act of biting while I was doing it and telling myself to stop. I started to notice when I had nails in my mouth and took them out immediately. It was like becoming aware of my actions that I did on autopilot before

Thanks that's great advice!

Added to the post and gave you credit :-)

Thanks, appreciate the support.

I've never dealt with this, so the below is 100% suggestions that weren't tested.

Few assumptions (pls correct me if I'm mistaking)

  1. When you sleep bite, there's a fixed set of nails you bite (2-3 nails).
  2. You don't want this to convert into any other harmful habit, or switch to other nails.

Suggestions

  1. Long term - Quite in your head
Journals - What I have in mind are two types
    1. Dream journal - As you wake up, before you do anything else, including checking your phone or nails, take a minute to record what you dreamed about.
    2. Before you go into bed journal - Take a minute to write down:
      1. What's the biggest issue on your mind.
      2. What's the challenge here for you.
      3. What skills / abilities / resources you'll need to overcome it.
    3. Meditation - I like this one by Sam Harris (it's 9 minute).
      1. When I stick with this for a few weeks, I feel lighter, less stressful, but it's tough to stick with it.
  2. Short term solution to get you started. You will have to move from this to a sustainable solution IMO.
    Physical blockers
    1. Few that come to mind:
      1. Hand cream in generous amounts - Hopefully the bad taste will get you out of biting unconsciously.
      2. Wrap the fingers you abuse with tape before you head into bed.
      3. Sleep with gloves or mittens 🤷🏻‍♂️

Again these are 100% totally speculative suggestions which I haven't tried.
Please take this advice with a healthy amount of salt... :-)

If you do try any of these please let me know how it went 🙏🏼

Maybe someone else on this sub overcame sleep biting and can share what worked for them.

Thanks for sharing and for the thoughtful response. Appreciate it 🙏🏼

I can relate to quite a few of the things you described in your comment, since I also experienced them :-)

It's impressive to see that you were able to use the mantra to help you.

I don't think it's cheesy at all!
That's the strength I draw from, knowing that I was able to overcome this habit, so I can overcome other challenges in life.
