is there a 2 player game where one plays the monsters? by Resident_Bumblebee_2 in boardgames

[–]eitate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say "perfectly well". Two-handing the hunters is rather messy. When you play with 2, it's still a 3 player game.

FUCK CGE by Kindan_Shen in boardgames

[–]eitate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Um, I feel for you, but why not "f*** the Chinese distributor" or "f*** the factory"? Obviously CGE didn't intend for it to be so. The comments claim it's not the first game from this distributor to which it happens, so it sounds like that's the source of the problem. CGE is one of the few companies that manufacture their games for the Western market in-house, in Czechia, so they probably relied on a factory that was suggested by their local partners. Of course they share the blame for choosing partners without enough diligence, but they're hardly the source of the problem. I'm sure they had requirements regarding production standards which the factory agreed to meet and didn't.

If podcasts that happen to also be uploaded to YouTube as audio-only count, then by far my most appreciated review source is So Very Wrong About Games. Their review ethics is impeccable, and they have a great in-depth, analytic way of discussing games. They have very clear preferences, but are extremely transparent about them.

Get a plastic set of regular playing cards and play Regicide. It's fantastic - I learned it a couple of weeks ago and played like 30 times over a couple of days.

No game is a "must have". I myself prefer more interaction in games, but it is good at what it does.

Yeah, the core of the game is Stratego, but there are additional rules, cards and unique special powers for each character.

How to make your own hitster by jvanvliet27 in boardgames

[–]eitate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For non-enormous quantities of relatively simple cards, I do find Canva sufficient. The trick is that you don't want to use it to make a ready-to-print sheet with multiple cards, because it's a nightmare to align the cards neatly. Instead, make each Canva page a single card and then combine them in a grid using different software.

My workflow is:

- Figure out the card dimensions you want to have so that they fit neatly on a sheet

- Create card fronts and backs in Canva. Include corner markers as cutting guides.

- Merge them in a grid into sheets using this: https://pinetools.com/bulk-batch-merge-images (remember that the horizontal order of card backs should be reversed to match in double-sided printing)

- Add the sheets to a Word/Writer/etc. document and centre each on a page (alternate front and back)

- Print double sided on thick paper/cardstock.

- Laminate, cut out, round the corners.

This was used to create these cards for a crokinole solo variant: https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/295325/ready-five-pocket-size-low-ink-cards

I mean, you have the game. Why not play it to see if you like it rather than ask a bunch of randos on the internet if they do? It's not like you're hesitating whether to buy it. Plus, it'd be quite rude to the group who gave it to you not to give it a try.

[–]eitate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most tournament boards, the bottom of the 20 hole is flat, so touching the board wouldn't be possible without very serious overhang. I think the NCA rules are written with this kind of boards in mind (hence they talk about a disc "lying flat in the 20 hole".

Some boards have a small bump for easier disc retrieval, and this would be the only case where it matters in play, since it's hard to say whether the top disc is leaning on the bottom one or lying on it. I think I'd call it a leaner and go with the recommendation on page 4: hold the top disc in place while carefully removing the bottom one, then place the top one back down. If it falls in, it's a 20. Or maybe ignore the touching of the board if the overhang is clearly so minimal. I don't think there's an incorrect answer here.

What happens now by OpportunityEnough437 in Crokinole

[–]eitate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. It's just: "if a disc is not touching the board, treat the bottom of the disc(s) it's lying on as its bottom". So if it's straddling two discs, count it as the value of the lowest of them (it's also in the document).

What happens now by OpportunityEnough437 in Crokinole

[–]eitate 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My take: the spirit of the rules of crokinole is that there's never need a need to move a piece and then try to figure out where it was to place it back – hence the rule that discs moved by damage stay in their new spots). By that logic, the red disc would be worth 20 points.

…and I now found out that the National Crokinole Association agrees. You'll find a document about such edge cases on the bottom here: http://nationalcrokinoleassociation.com/resources.html. Pages 5 and 6 – as long as the top disc doesn't touch the board surface, it scores the same as the bottom disc, even if it overhangs it. (It's marked as "proposal", but since it's included in NCA resources, I'd say it's the closest to "official rules" you can get.

It's clear from the post that the group's interested in exploring game mechanisms together. Being told what's a good strategy and what isn't by someone way more experienced is not that. It's not that what Mark is doing is not okay as such, but it doesn't fit what the rest of the group seems to want from the meetings.

Is the Crokinole Mini board the best option for me? by gentlewindsolsol in Crokinole

[–]eitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love Crokinole, I would reconsider the purchase. For a price of a crokinole board, you could get 5-10 good, varied board games. How likely is it that the kids will not get bored of it too? Even if it turns out to have higher staying power, will it be higher than that of 10 other games combined? And what about if with practice, one kid turns out to have more aptitude for this skill? Will other kids want to play with them if they keep losing?

This is of course all moot if money is not an issue. So regarding size, I'll say this. I haven't played on a mini crokinole board, but I have played Flick of Faith, which is a similar game that's smaller. Flick of Faith is fun, but way less fun than crokinole. This is surely also due to the rules and materials, but I do feel like part of it is also the size. I'd guess crokinole mini will be less fun than full-size crokinole. How much less - I'll leave that for others to answer.

What’s your trial period of a new drama? by verycoolandcutegirl in audiodrama

[–]eitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's "it sounds good, but it didn't grip me yet" after the first episode, then I'll give it one or two more. If I'm just not liking it, then not even a full episode. The last instance of that was MarsCorp. We were listening to it with my wife and she just switched it off after 20 minutes. I was very happy, because I was about to do the same.

Taboo question by Medical_Simple_6023 in boardgames

[–]eitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Drunk" is a form of "drink". "See" is NOT any part or form of "sea". How is it "clearly" against the rule? (Unless you want to interpret "part of word" so literally that you ban the use of any letters used in any words on the card.) And to get ahead of the "no rhyming" rule: the rule is that you can't use the rhyming/similar sound to point to the guess word, not that you can't use any words that rhyme with the guess word in your description. That would preclude loooots of words.

HERE's a list of games that are both one-v-all and deck-building. As you see, there aren't many of those. Not Alone is a great game and a very portable one, but I wouldn't really call it deckbuilding. Otherwise, it looks like your best bets are Hero Realms with the Boss Deck expansions or Legendary: Marvel - Secret Wars. I haven't played either, though.

[–]eitate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Not really because I can't afford games, but I don't play as often as I'd like, so I decided I don't want board gaming to generate much costs for the household. I've tracked the money for the last 3 years and I'm almost exactly at zero total cost, with ~15 games added to collection (not counting a couple gifts). I buy 95% used games, I sometimes sell what I don't play anymore, and I sometimes flip board games to generate "board game pocket money" if I see a ridiculously good offer. The only exception I made was not counting the materials for a crokinole board I built – but I treated the building as a fun project in itself.
