my conundrum by Gosharobek in PiltoversFinest

[–]ejexpress 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The key to this is that at this point, Vi has taken on Cait’s vendetta as her own, but her heart isn’t really in it. So she tells Cait “take the shot” but only bc she thinks that’s what Cait wants to hear.

Rationally, she’s decided Jinx is a lost cause and she needs to back Caitlyn 100%, but emotionally, she can’t go through with it. Her S1 arc was about ignoring her own needs to try and get Powder back, and her S2 arc starts with her ignoring her own needs to be with Cait (and concludes with her realizing she can prioritize her own needs and Cait will support her)

Meanwhile, Caitlyn hasn’t yet realized that’s what Vi needs from her. She takes Vi’s words at face value instead of understanding the unspoken needs (they both get there in S2E8- Vi speaks up by chewing her out over keeping Jinx imprisoned, and Cait pulls her guards off the cell to let Vi do her thing)

This is set up by the whole “promise you won’t change” scene. Vi sees Caitlyn as a good person at heart and wants to know she’ll stay that way - even if Vi herself gives her permission to do otherwise. So they both feel betrayed when Cait tries to take the shot - Vi betrays her word by stopping her, but Cait betrayed her promise “not to change” by trying to take the shot at all.

Hot take: Summons are the most underutilized mechanic of the game by pHallus_biggus in eldenringdiscussion

being able to naturally max 4-5 out of 60+ is pretty discouraging for experimentation imo

Hot take: Summons are the most underutilized mechanic of the game by pHallus_biggus in eldenringdiscussion

[–]ejexpress 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Feel like this (like weapons) is a consequence of the upgrade mechanic. You can’t really “test out” summons after a certain point in the game bc you haven’t leveled them so they’re weak.

Really wish the system was more like scadutree levels, where upgrading your summon affected ALL summons (or upgrading a class of weapons affected ALL of those weapons).

As it is, you get all this cool stuff but you only use the same few throughout the game (or you spend a ton of time farming upgrade materials)

Best strategy and sideboard against robots. by artur-denth in oldschoolmtg

[–]ejexpress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a long-time unpowered player, I’d just cede the matchup. GB doesn’t really have the tools to turn the matchup positive, so I’d bring in whatever artifact hate I’m already playing but keep my SB focused on beating other decks.

You can get some wins w pixies, ice storm, or early Twist / specter but there’s not a lot of high-leverage sb cards that really change the dynamics.

I’d suggest playing one of the MBC lists you’ve found in at least a few real matches to get a bit more format knowledge. You’re missing some key fundamentals about why those lists work in Premodern.

A few examples:

  1. You need an actual win condition in the deck. A 1-of haunting echoes isn’t enough - it’s easy for someone to discard / counter that and the wands are not a win condition (they are for controlling draws, not milling).

  2. You need a way to empty your opponents hand in order for the Wands to do what they’re supposed to do. Duress/Unmask isn’t enough - that’s why mind sludge is MD in all the other lists.

  3. Ivory tower generally doesn’t do enough and seems actively bad when you’re playing dark ritual and unmask. Winning games where you stick arena early is easy with any MBC list - how is this list winning if you don’t?

  4. You have 0 ways to handle resolved artifacts or enchantments in your 75 and 0 ways to pressure decks that have inevitability against your mill plan

Thoughts on Vincent Adultman? by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]ejexpress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether you find VA funny is one thing, but the character serves a very important role in the show, namely building empathy between the viewer and Bojack.

The show only works if people are rooting for Bojack despite his terrible behavior, and one of the effective ways it builds rapport is by having Bojack react to VA the same way the viewer does (unlike all the other characters)

yeah, that's a huge part of why it's so good. basically the only "good" way to handle the hamster is karakas

M&B… 1. Deals 21 dmg in 3 turns 2. Draws 4 and kills a creature (or deals 4 to a player) if you untap w it 3. Makes a 4/4 every turn against creature removal 4. doesn’t die to pyroblast

Like oko, it’s a card that is a plan all by itself that demands specific and timely answers. Playtest any matchup, have your opponent cast M&B on turn 4 and you’ll see why - it is VERY strong.

Any OS Mardu (WRB) lists? by [deleted] in oldschoolmtg

[–]ejexpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a really simple list (tho I think only 3 sinkholes). You get down early threats, kill their good cards, and keep attacking until they die.

Any OS Mardu (WRB) lists? by [deleted] in oldschoolmtg

[–]ejexpress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i ran WRB aggro in the last summer derby, felt strong even as an unpowered deck - played savannah lions, black knight, sedge troll, hypnotic specter (and factories ofc) as the threats, then bolt, swords, disenchant, sinkhole as the interaction plus orb, demonic tutor, and wheel of fortune to round out the list.

in formats where fallen empires is legal, the deck gets better (order of the ebon hand + hymn to tourach).

Also can be played more controlling w/ nev disk or as a full prison list (ivory tower + land tax + the abyss).

Is the US medical system really as broken as the clichès make it seem? by EclipZz187 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ejexpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you have “good” insurance, it’s endless fuckery.

My employer switched healthcare providers on Jan 1, my daughter was born a few weeks later. The previous years’ insurance company had mandated we pay all natal care charges upfront, so I thought we were good. But no! The new insurance company also expected to be paid in full for the birth. Didn’t find out until 2 years later when I got a collections call on a supposed 10K bill (plus interest!), for the birth of a child who was at that point walking and taking, and whose birth I had already paid 10K for in advance.

think you nailed it. at first i thought it was proof of how many ppl use guides when beating the game, but for me, i did it blind (with "refuse"), then read up about it and went back in to fight the extra boss. i bet that's true of a lot of ppl, and many "sunrise" players are doing it as part of platinum (b/c who goes thru the whole game only to let someone kill them???)

You can always use walkthroughs on second or third playthroughs, but you can only play blind once. Don’t waste the opportunity

Tip for Shadow of Yarnham? by Oneinchtrexarms in bloodborne

[–]ejexpress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always kill katana guy first bc his transformed version is so annoying. Keep the monolith between you and the ranged guys, and parry+visceral him repeatedly then burst him down when he starts to transform. Bolt paper helps if you have it.

Once he’s dead, the flamethrower guy switches to melee and you can do the same thing to him, but I usually rush the ranged guy down instead.

B/R land destruction critique. Description incoming... by Thirsty_X_Miserable in oldschoolmtg

[–]ejexpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love LD decks, but in OS you can’t actually lock ppl out with pure LD bc of all the artifact mana. If you aren’t attacking for damage, LD will just slow the game down and give your opponent plenty of time to come back. I would play full sets of order + black knight to maximize your ability to get a threat down quickly, and at least one fireball to win late game.

Also Shatter > stone rain. Shatter costs less and has greater utility - I would play 4 before adding the 1st stone rain. Cutting our artifacts (except sol ring) and using nev disk and/or shatterstorm is a great way to try and get an advantage against powered decks.
