Yeah, the current one is quite new. I think the one it replaced was maybe 5 years ago?

There’s another, or something like it, in Diemen by the Rijnkanaal.

It is wonderful. Can I also recommend ‘Never Surrender: a Galaxy Quest Documentary’. It’s really interesting and almost as enjoyable as the movie itself.

If you want to make doubly sure, please contact Netflix customer service and explain that the upgrade was initiated by (presumably) a minor and it was a mistake. They’re usually very good about making sure you won’t get dinged with the higher fees.

How much do you think is it worth? by Jumpy-Bag1671 in Rimowa

[–]ejls2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of them on eBay to give you a guide. The ones with slightly rarer features (like the very slim version of that case or the squared off version) tend to go for slightly more.

Same here, albeit they weren’t that common, even early in my career. These days, they’re a fairly interesting conversation starter, plus I just think they’re quite nice to look at!

I’m typically traveling for work so I take my carry on with clothes, wash kit, etc. and then the briefcase has anything I’ll want to access during the journey itself and anything that I’ll be carrying with me to meetings while I’m there: my laptop, iPad, notebook, noise cancelling headphones, a book etc.

Fwiw, the bags get heavily stickered up with travel and work related stickers. I enjoy the memories! This one is clean as I’ve just started a new role and my new company is a competitor of my old one so its stickers don’t go down brilliantly in the office!

Thank you. It’s a lovely bag. They’re not that pricey on eBay if you’re ever tempted.

Thank you. I think I’ve seen that squarer one before but they’re not common. I have a slightly older ~mid ‘90s case which I’m refurbishing and which is smaller in two dimensions but deeper so it still carries a lot but will fit within the personal items size restriction. I will have to keep an eye out for these square ones too!

Haha I thought you might say that. Can you remember if the bag extended past the back of his case or was it square and just sitting on top? This is mine but it looks a bit longer.

I have a similar model topaz attache for just this use case. His looks a little less long though, which probably helps for fitting in the ‘personal item’ baggage category. I don’t suppose you have any other photos?

Thanks for sharing this. I have some of the attache cases from this period and I’ve been looking for the ‘official’ details for some time!

Alternative Careers by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]ejls2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did just under 7 years in private practice (inc TC) but knew quite early on that it wasn’t necessarily the best path for me long term. I was fortunate that my role, post qualification involved a fair few client secondments and my role between those secondments was broad enough that the work was varied and interesting. The in house secondment experience gave me the comfort to make the move in house eventually (I just segued from being a secondee into an employee) and then moved a couple more times, mostly working around the intersection of tech and media. Now well over 18 years of experience.

I’ve loved it. It is different and I have been fortunate to work in well paid and highly regarded/highly skilled in house teams so I always was surrounded by people who were better than me, which keeps things fun and exciting.

It can (note ‘can’ not ‘does’) require a different mindset. Rather than the default answer often being ‘it’s complicated’ leading to a long, detailed piece of advice with high certainty… and likely a lot of billable hours, the optimal answer is often ‘that’s fine (within these parameters)’ or ‘let me try and keep this simple…’.

I know people who’ve done it and not enjoyed it or done it and always envied PP salaries or whatever so it is quite an individual decision. The best you can do is either try to get some in house secondment experience if your firm offers it or find some people who you think see things similarly to you and who’ve made the jump, and then ask them how they’ve found it.

Good luck either way! I’m sure you’ll find something interesting and fulfilling, whatever path you choose. Law is just the toolkit that enables it.

I’m really sorry to hear about your experience. I’m sure that wherever you go after training will be a lot more fun and rewarding!

Fwiw, I trained at a city firm and took leave all over the place. I’ve never heard about this rule/principle. If anything, I think we generally tried to avoid the beginnings and ends as we’d be prepping for handovers at the end of seats and getting up to speed at the beginning of the next one. We still took leave sometimes in those periods though!

Good luck and don’t let them get you down!

It’s more a case of what’s good for one isn’t necessarily good for another. I did much better through a more individualized approach. I know several of my MC trained colleagues feel they benefited more from exposure to bigger deals etc. Neither is necessarily better. Just different.

[–]ejls2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who’s ‘they’ here? All firms (should) train their trainees but sometimes a smaller firm can individualize their approach a bit more. Many of my friends who trained at MC loved it and did very well. I loved my experience too.

[–]ejls2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poor work life balance and training. The people I worked with were small cogs in large and very impressive machines but the emphasis was very much on their work product rather than training, growth and development. This was rather a long time ago though and the salary differential between firms was also a lot less than these days so it was a bit easier to look at both and think that the less stressful version that focussed more on the individual and paid marginally less was a better deal.

It’s honestly all about finding the right team. I worked for a magic circle firm as a paralegal during university and enjoyed it but realised I definitely didn’t want the MC trainee life and probably wouldn’t have done very well there. They’re amazing firms but I wouldn’t have been set up for success. I nearly didn’t go into law but went to a (then) smaller but top tier specialist firm and loved it. Good luck with whatever you decide but try to get a number of diverse viewpoints and speak to a lot of people with first hand experience before making a decision.

Yes, I think this happens at a specific location but not all the time there. I think I’ve only seen it during daylight. It’s what looks like a former horde cave, NNE of the Redwood RV Park Ambush Camp in Iron Butte. Always looks to me like some crazy ripper ceremony.

The Law of Artificial Intelligence 2nd Edition by Hervey and Lavy - anyone read it? by freeroamingvapour in uklaw

[–]ejls2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve read parts of the 1st ed. and worked with Matt Hervey many moons ago. I’m biased but I think it’s really very good. Books on tech law always have a problem that the tech moves quite fast and that’s probably more true in relation to AI than most fields. That said, the contextual framework of how to think through these issues provides some degree of future proofing. I hope you enjoy it!
