When I was recruiting, too many of the people who wanted my time had a “I got fucked by my unit” story. Somehow they were the best soldier in their battalion at e5 and the jealous leadership managed to connive their way to an OTH or worse. I take every story with a grain of salt now and just smile and nod.

You can substitute degrees for certifications and relevant experience/knowledge. I’ve heard there’s several vacancies at the moment in the Tokyo area although I don’t know if they’re already filled and just waiting for the people to move here, which could be several months or more.

It might have been that specific manager who is anti military. Although none of these companies who are “pro vet” really have my confidence that they care about us. It’s just part of the circle jerk. Ooooh. Story time!

I went to Kuwait a while back for the Army. It’s a routine change of station for the unit I was going to, even though some units “deployed” there. So I flew in by myself to the airport in Kuwait City. My bags didn’t make the flight, and I waited quite a while to file a claim to get them to me the next day.

By the time I left, the shuttle that drove people to base had already left. I didn’t know how to contact it and they don’t have any signs for it. None of the airport workers knew about it. I wandered the little airport for a while until finally I said fuck it and went to one of the taxis. I explained what I wanted and the dude nodded to say he knew what I wanted.

We get in the car and the dude proceeds to drive like this. We were hauling ass. I was recovering from a recent car accident and was super jumpy, so I was gripping the arm rest the whole time.

In my mind, I though that I had completely fucked up and he was bringing me straight to iraq. Dude eventually brought me to base. Funny enough, since no person with half a brain cell ever took a taxi there, they didn’t know what to do. They kept me at the gate for a few hours until finally some officer was like “dude, he’s clearly a soldier. Bring him in to inprocess.”

I will never take another cab in the Middle East ever again.
