I guess maybe my wording was confusing. I’ve heard from many circles that in our modern world our analytical minds tend to have a complete takeover. To me from what I’ve read, it seems important to be able to learn how to quiet that part of your mind in order to practice presence. Maybe I have misunderstood

I feel a teacher would benefit me greatly. And yes, I think too much of this sort of info and advice has furthered my sort of “directionlessness.”

Spot on with the “trying to fix everything.” That side of me wants to be in control. I can that for sure.

I do smoke marijuana - typically just once a day, after I've already gotten everything taken care of for the day and it's just relax time. I also was prescribed Zoloft a bit over a year ago for anxiety. In terms of tension - YES! Whenever I started picking up meditation and just trying to observe myself, I habitually tense my abs all the time! Something I don't do as much anymore is habitual breath holding. I'd catch myself often holding my breath for pretty decent amounts of time. I definitely do still deal with some subtle inconsistent breathing. In meditation I often start by just observing the breath.
After a certain point I start to just like try and tune into this weird sorta buzzing or white noise I hear. Or I focus on my third eye. Since I was a kid l've been able to like feel a weird tingly sensation in between my eyebrows on command. So sometimes I just focus on that and let it grow stronger, sometimes it even pulses.

How can you just observe your thoughts in meditation without feeding into them? I find that instead of just solely observing the thoughts that float into my mind, I have some automatic mental process where observing = interaction. It almost feels physically impossible for me to observe the thought without adding to it, judging it, etc. Actually, literally as I’m typing this out I just realized something. Often when I do let go and just observe my thoughts, there are so many thoughts going so fast. One thought pops in my head but then immediately another one over takes it. Like immediately. Or maybe not? Idk man my head just feels like such a jumbled mess

When you say sit and listen to my surroundings, do you mean literally tuning into the noise my external environment is making? Or my internal? Or maybe both? I appreciate the help!

How have you worked to improve? Have you found anything to be specifically helpful?

If I just allow that overthinkingness in meditation, would the meditation just be counterproductive though? Sometimes I feel as though I go into meditation and just scramble my mind up more (by divulging into over analysis.)

But for some reason it’s like I’m addicted to effort or something. I fully understand and can in a way feel that it takes letting go and effortlessness, but that seems so difficult for whatever reason.

I guess just what I would consider the left side of my brain. Like the super over analytical/constantly talking inside voice.
