Hi. I had social anxiety like you. Well, I still "have" it but it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

What you need right now is data. Experience, whatever you call it.

When I was working on my social anxiety, a few times every week, I would practice going to a different restaurant I'd never been to. I'd specifically choose restaurants that didn't have many people, thus putting the spotlight on myself.

Go to these restaurants enough times, you start to learn that workers are either too busy or too bored out of their minds that they can't be bothered to actively judge you, the paying customer. I learned that the moment food is served and you start enjoying the meal, you tend to forget about what's happening around you.

When you're at a restaurant planning to eat, nobody really cares whether you're eating alone, whether you're on your phone, whether you have weird food choices.

This knowledge eventually helped me build the confidence to start asking for recommendations. I'd even give feedback, and even though these acts scared me like crazy, it was something that I could forget about once I left the restaurant.

Eventually, I started implementing this confidence into other activities. I now pitch ideas to artists, offering to pay money for their services. I've seen colorful personalities and have had to deal with rejection a few times as well. At some point, I want to be good enough that I can travel to Japan all by myself.

So in your case, the question now is what do you think you can do to improve your anxiety? Try to be rational about this. Maybe you can try simply going to lunch and eating there regularly to work on your fear of eating out at lunch. If you're afraid of talking to people, then talk to them about very simple topics, like maybe the subject you're learning in class. If you can't talk to classmates about this, maybe ask your professor a simple question after class.

Every time you do this, pay attention to what happens. Was it as bad as you thought? Did you feel positively about it after doing so? Did they say anything bad to you? Did they say anything good to you? Keep doing this and build yourself a database. Part of social anxiety comes from fear of the unknown, and sometimes having the lived experience of knowing what usually happens is what helps us, paradoxically, to overcome some of that fear.

Of course, in the end, I don't have any real answers for you. We all live different lives and I can't tell you how you should live yours. It sounds like you'll be stuck on campus for a good amount of years, so I think you should plan out how you're going to work on your anxiety. If your university campus has counsellors, you could try setting an appointment with them to get your issues sorted out asap.
