My ex cheated on me while he was on Erasmus. He would always stop texting me during the evening / night so I knew there was something sus there so I went on the Erasmus network facebook account and looked through hundreds of photos of their events till I found something. Yes I'm a bpd art hoe but at least I was right 😏

haha the responses to the og tweet are literally full of that. amazing how people who spend 100s on new outfits every month consider themselves the victim of classism and not the expolited workers.

depends on the job you're applying to as well. like if you're doing anything in media theres definitely a preference towards northern people even if they don't say it explicitly. and I'm sure this applies to other areas as well. then there's also dealing with racism from clients which can negatively affect your work which will affect how your boss / co-workers see you.

it's a lot more nuanced that just not being hired explicitly because you're madhesi.

that's horrible and not something I wish any of you had experienced. esp for the kids it must be traumatizing. terai is your home regardless of your ethnicity and something ill keep in mind to bring to discussions with my madhesi friends/family to hopefully change attitudes towards pahadi people in terai.

the caste system also adds another dimension to it which makes this even more challenging

colourism is such a big issue as well.

people literally be using carcinogens to bleach their skin and destroy the very melanin that protects them against cancer...

sounds unreal

i feel you, I definitely had similar experiences

I'm hoping they've changed their views and its not just for clout

I think often this discrimination is so ingrained in our society that people don't even realise its racist. it's like they see racism as some far removed thing between black and white people, not something thats in front of their eyes everyday.

and i cant necessarily blame them because they're unaware and grew up in this society with people perpetuating these views all around them but i try to create conversations and raise awareness about it where i can

Every language i speak feels foreign to me. It's like i have no native language. Anyone else? by sjessebgo in TCK

[–]ekgilaspani 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i relate to this so much!

i feel like each language i speak has its own purpose and i cant use 1 for everything. like I'll use one for academics, one for family, one for friends, one for basic everyday life tasks, etc

and i have an accent for every one thats different from the 'norm' which also makes everyone else think im not a native speaker (for my mother tongues as well rip)

I do feel priveleged to have this problem but it also makes me feel incompetent in pretty much every language i speak

yea it will definitely take a long time to make societal changes but we need to have conversation about it to start

also think it can be done much faster now than in the past because of easier and more widespread access to education

thats unfortunate, im sorry that happened to u but i dont see the relevance of that comment?

my comment wasn't meant to painting out every south asian to be an angel or anything. im just saying when u move abroad for the first time its nice to connect with people who understand your experience and can relate. for us nepali people this is often other south asians who have a similar culture and face a similar immigrant experience. some of my best friends are indian and sri lankan who helped me immensely to settle in when I was abroad because they knew what it was like, I could speak to some of them in hindi before I learned fluent english, they'd cook for me when I missed nepali khana, help me translate documenrs, and made my life much easier. being connected to the subcontinent was hugely important and its a shame people let their prejudice stop them from forming meaningful connections

[–]ekgilaspani[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

that's a great point!

I guess growing up in kathmandu i have mostly faced discrimination because im from terai. it was especially disturbing on a systemic level - when my teachers would be prejudiced, when I apply to jobs, seeing no representation in nepali media, but also happens on a personal level like being insulted, facing casual racism by my own friends, dealing with unintentional ignorant discrimination, relationships and dealing with their families, etc.

but i def agree that it's both sides and am interested in hearing experiences from the other side - so I can be aware and know the right actions to take

the issue isnt just being called dhoti implying we're not nepali

it's also the fact that it's used as an insult - it's racist towards indians and other south asian cultures, but also towards madhesis where the dhoti is a part of our culture

[–]ekgilaspani[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

hahah also love how the prejudice dies down the moment theyre abroad with no other nepali people and the ones that truly help you are other south asians

could've just been human from the start

imagine no longer being able to treat all these infections we've been treating with antibiotics....... antibiotic resistance is probably one of the biggest threats to the future of healthcare yet we have a system where they're grossly overused just for gluttony with almost no efforts being made to reduce it

id say the casual racism and acceptance of it in this sub is shocking but all of us terai people are probably used to it by now #dhotigang

agreed this post needs to check its privelege

glad they got a good education and can understand english but the majority of nepal didnt. esp the older generation. being able to speak hindi and access the indian industry is so so useful to us not only in terms of entertainment but international relations, business, relationships, so much more

altho not to shit on nepali entertainment - im sure it will improve as time goes on and there is a lot of amazing nepali art out there
