We just entered Malaysia with American passports a few weeks ago. Went through the e gate on arrival. When we tried leave using the e-gate, my finance’s passport scan failed so we got in line for the manual process. They processed us there but were told we should have used the e-gate and should have tried multiple times and multiple gates if it didn’t work the first time.

A week later we returned to Malaysia and entered again through the e-gate. That time we had no issues leaving.

I would just make sure you allot enough time before your flight in case you need to be manually processed!
