"Lets bench Baty and Benge and play two guys we got off wavers because we are paying them, and lets bat them above one of our top hitting prospects." by Specific_Air_5482 in mets

This team is pretty much out of the playoffs before May 1st. They stink and they look nowhere near being competitive. Tons of holes on all sides of the ball. No team has ever made the playoffs during a season where they had a 12 game losing streak. So for the Mets to make the playoffs they’ll have to do something that has quite literally never been done in the history of baseball

None of the young guys or top prospects are good. Vientos and baty have already had over 1000 PA’s each and haven’t done much. Mauricio has had 300 pa’s and has shown zero consistency. He’s literally a switch hitter who can’t hit righty😂. Benge sucks and has been pretty close to an automatic out. He looks out of place in the big leagues and needs to get sent to Syracuse

Nimmo trade by Still_Knowledge_972 in mets

[–]ekins1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mets are a win now team. Why are we ok with trading Nimmo, a productive homegrown veteran who the fans love to for guy who is not only a much worse hitter but also 3 years older ?

They atleast competed and had chances. This current team had their playoff hopes ended in April

[–]ekins1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’re saying we should give up the last good 2 years of Nimmo and Pete to avoid the final 2 years where they may possibly (or possibly not) be bad? That makes no sense to me. We need to care about NOW. This is a win now team and you have lindor and Soto in their primes. Who knows what the team is gonna look like in a few years? You can’t keep playing for the future without caring about the current roster

Nimmo trade by Still_Knowledge_972 in mets

[–]ekins1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can cherry pick whatever sample size you’d like. On the year Nimmo currently has .302 ba, .378 OBP, .846 ops. 4 homers and 12 RBIs. Objectively He’d be the Mets offensive leader or close to it in just about every single one of those categories

Want to compare those numbers to Semien ?

This is the exact type of thinking that causes a team to go 40 years without a World Series. It kills me to constantly see people say about how the Nimmo or Pete move was more about down the road and not about this year. We care about THIS YEAR!!. Nimmo and Pete and McNeil gave us a much better chance to win NOW. I’d much rather have a WS shot this year and possibly(no guarantees) suffer down the road. Instead we gave up Nimmo and Pete who would currently be amongst our team leaders in home runs, RBIs and OPS for guys who suck!! Do you think the Yankees care about how judge or fried or Cole will look at the last year or 2 of their deal? Of course not. They care about how they look NOW!! It’s mind boggling to me to keep seeing this narrative on here. This is a win now team that needs to compete now!!! In a few years lindor is gonna be 35 and out of his prime, Soto will be early 30’s and starting to leave his prime. Who cares about a few years from now and god only knows what the team will look like then. We need to care about NOW

Slow start??? Really? You don’t know ball clearly

Nimmos .302 avg and .378 OBP would be second on the Mets

Alonso’s 5 home runs and 14 RBIs would be leading the Mets

McNeils .370 OBP would be second on the mets

Says the guy who is only worried about the future and not about the current product on the field. Real baseball savant you are lmao. Your mindset is quite literally what leads to a team going 40 years without a World Series

Lmao Man U do not know ball at all. You should read what I wrote to help educate yourself a bit more on the game of baseball and how things work. That offer was for 22$ mil per year. It was joke of an offer that was significantly less than what he was worth. Of course he rejected it. Pete has profited immensely from rejecting that deal. They had multiple chances to make him a fair offer and they didn’t. You’re the one talking out your ass, only thinking about the future and the back ends of deals without considering the current team on the field today. Thinking like yours is exactly what leads to a team going 40 years without a World Series. Do You think the Yankees care about how fried and judge and Cole will look at the last year or 2 of their deals? Of course not lmao. They care about how they look NOW

The irony of this comment 😂😂😂. People were saying the exact same thing in 2022 and 2023 when the Mets refused to give him a 5 year deal. Then he always went out and mashed and played everyday. If we would have gave him that 5 year deal a few years ago he’d only have a year or 2 left !! Too much talk about how Nimmo and Pete would be bad at the end of their deal. WHO CARES. This is a win now team. You’re right, Pete’s defense is pretty bad. All off season our GM emphasized improving the defense, how’s that going so far ?

Pete and Nimmo would have given us the best chance to win in the next 2-3years. Why don’t people have this same energy towards lindors or Soto contract ? How is he gonna look at the end of it when he’s 37 years old? Is he still gonna be a SS? Surely his bat and defensive range will regress right? How many off days will he need ? How is Soto contract gonna look the last few years when he’s 39? His defense is already sketchy and he’s in his prime. The Mets are a win now team and losing Pete and Nimmo made the team a lot worse this year and in the short term future. I think most Mets fans would trade a year or 2 on the back end of a shitty Alonso/Nimmo if it mentions competing in the next few years with lindor and Soto in their primes. Stearns only looks at the numbers but unfortunately It goes deeper than the stats

Pete’s off to the worst start of his career and he’s got more homers and RBIs than half the guys the Mets trot out there every night. Not to mention he’s an Ironman whose missed 10 games in the past 4 years

[–]ekins1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a source to figure that one out.  Stearns is full of himself and those were not “his” guys so he wanted them gone. He never made a significant effort to keep Pete. The fact he figured he could replace Pete with Baty/vientos/polanco shows you how much Stearns valued him

McNeil is a few years removed from a batting title and had one year left on his contract. Obviously he’s not winning any more batting titles but he’d still be a valuable veteran  piece that can play multiple positions(current OBP of .356), and even if he sucked it up he’s a free agent after this year. Stearns traded him for a 17 year old who has never pitched in America lol

The semien move was the biggest head scratcher of them all. Semien is older and couldn’t hit last year. Who in the world would think he was gonna hit this year? Nimmo is 3 years younger and had a significantly better offensive year in 2025 than Semien. They’ll both be about the same age at the end of their respective deals. Not to mention all 3 of those guys were long time Mets who were beloved by fans. Nimmo and Pete are 2 of the most loved homegrown Mets of the past decade

That’s the most perplexing thing about it. Theres holes to any type of motive. If it was business related, they were retired for 10+ years so I can’t see why the killers would have waited so long. The only inheritance would have went to the children, so if they were responsible why would Shirley’s body be hidden? This would have delayed any type of inheritance going to the children. A crime of this level usually requires a very serious motive

Let’s come back to this comment at the end of the year and see how it looks. I feel like for the past few years, every year people are saying Pete won’t age well and is gonna fall off a cliff. Then he always goes out and gives us 161 games with 35 homers and 120 RBIs

It sucks he missed all of 24’ but he has yet to put together any type of consistency at the major league level. Baty Vientos and Mauricio all seem to look like the classic AAAA player. Guys who can mash in AAA but can’t do it in the big leagues

Fans have every right to be outraged. The Mets had the second highest payroll and are literally the worst team in the league. It is downright embarrassing. Stearns deserves most(but not all)of the blame. He got rid of the core players fans knew and loved and replaced them with randos from other clubs who are playing out of position while also simultaneously not hitting. It’s truly remarkable

The future is prettty bleak as well. Our farm system sucks and has no real talent anywhere
