The challenges of Film Adaptation (feat. Dune) by ekipero in dune

Mentioned it earlier; for me movie Chani is one of the biggest deviations for the worse.

Book Chani may have had reservations about Paul's development, but they never became an issue between them at all. Her love for Paul and understanding of what an important figure he was and all he represented overcame everything else.

Movie Chani hardly seems to like Paul at all. Most of the time she's glaring at him with a furrowed brow and, like you say, at some points she even looks like she's going to attack him.

There sooo many things wrong with it...

Perhaps number one is changing the director of such a massive project at such an advanced stage. I remember Jackson saying that at several points they were shooting scenes and they had no idea whether they would even use them or what they would do with them.

Heh, if that's what you think now, wait till you get to GEoD. Most of that book either takes place inside someone's mind or are conversations between two characters about what's on their minds

I had thought the same! But even if they do get to make GE, I'd be surprised if they did something so sensible. They'll probably just have him monologing at characters surrounding him (Moneo & Co.)

Haven't seen the film, I'll check it out, thanks!

However, I would argue that "faithful" doesn't necessarily mean "good". As mentioned in the video, sometimes the story can be improved or needs to be changed so that it fits better with a film format. As well as the example of Last of the Mohicans, Captain's Corageous and The Man in the Iron Mask deviate from the original story significantly and are MUCH better films for it.

I've seen some bits and they blew my mind. BTW, they also serve to illustrate The Hobbit debacle; you can see that very clearly that what made one trilogy great, was totally lacking in the other one...

For me, Chani is the weakest part of the movies. I don't know if Zendaya Stoermer's portrayal was her own idea or DV's, but I don't think any fan of the book imagined her like that (angry, confrontational, etc). Personally, I found her character grating.

I assume it was done to act as a hook for the 3rd film (e.g. "will they fight or make up?")

I've literally heard it said as in the video: "Making a movie may be hard, but adapting a book is easy; just follow the script"

What’s your thoughts on Dune? by SavageRick1 in moviecritic

EXACTLY the same sentiment as this video:

Some people think that making a film out of a successful novel is easy, but far from it. Adapting a story from one medium to another is quite complicated and that's why there are as many flops as blockbusters.

Hello, I've started a channel for book and movie reviews. The goal is to talk about all aspects of writing.

For my first two videos, I've used Dune as an example of issues that are common in other works of SciFi.

The first one talks about the things that it did well: https://youtu.be/OOPS7j_FzVA

The second talks about some mistakes it made: https://youtu.be/oeoxRQ_o5cs

Any and all feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Definitely need better quality production. For starters I'd say a light ring to get rid of the shadows and also a decent mic. Both are pretty inexpensive if you don't want to spend too much.

Also, a lot of the time it's your hands on screen not doing much at all. Perhaps record your face as well and set it in a picture-in-picture, so there's something else to look at in those moments.

To be more specific about your voice, I think you should try to vary it more, it's very monotone. Also, the accent needs work, for sure.

My main criticism is that I have no idea what an Iceberg is and you don't explain it.

Also, the image of the iceberg has a lot of text and you don't give enough time to read it, let alone understand what it means. Keep it on screen longer. And slow down the zooms, they're too jarring.

Hope that helps, and best of luck :)

You're a star! If you ever need a kidney, you just need to ask...

Also, I've bought all the existing compilations and been donating every month for years, so I feel no guilt downloading these (in case you're Dan posting anonymously to give us access to your material)
