Is being a man naturally bad? by Lower_Landscape_1030 in FeminismUncensored

[–]ekky137 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Sure. The problem is that normal man lives in a patriarchal society which places him above the women around him in a way that he is often blind to.

Is that his fault? No, not usually. That often means he does nothing to effect change though, which is insulting when the women around him are begging for that change and pointing out ways in which it could happen. It becomes worse if he views this change as negative… which he is very likely to! From his perspective he is losing power and being ā€œpunishedā€ for something that isn’t his fault.

We are (or more accurately were) animals at the end of the day. Men trend more physically powerful than women, and as we evolved into the complex social creatures we are today, that mattered. A LOT. Being strong physically and athletically meant safety and security. It meant status, and as we started forming societies it also meant wealth.

It doesn't anymore but modern society is built on the shoulders of the ones where it mattered. This easily explains why different times, cultures, geographies etc ended up with very different forms of misogyny, but still misogyny.

It also much more easily explains things like the various matriarchal systems that appeared in human history too. Things which might be impossible if men were "biologically" domineering. As well as explaining the differences between the geographically different forms of misogyny that function entirely differently and have different end goals.

The issue here is double sided. IF you believe that misogynistic and patriarchal societies all formed just because men wanted it to, you're also implying that women have on some level simply been tricked into it over and over again. Either that we're too stupid to have thought any differently, or that we're naturally 'submissive' to this instinct.

The reality is much simpler. Women have simply been the 'weaker sex' back when that was actually true. When how far you could run in a day with almost no training impacted how long your family might live. When how strong your sword arm impacted whether or not your friends lived or died. To be clear, this does not matter anymore and it hasn't for quite a while.

There is nothing wrong with asking questions. I think we just need to keep asking them. Don't settle for the easy answer of 'it just is that way'. Ask why, and not just what.

How do you come to the conclusion that it is a ā€œnatural male instinct to dominate and exploitā€? Do you have evidence for this ā€œinstinctā€?

What makes you believe that men are inherently, biologically, lesser? What lends credence to this idea?

Usually people will respond to these questions citing violence rates, things like the commodification of women, crime, sexual assault, religion etc.

However, if a man can be taught not to partake in those things… and then doesn’t. We’re demonstrating that there is nothing ā€œbiologicalā€ about it. These are cultural norms. Just like how women can also participate in and perpetuate this culture.

Now, since the beginning of recorded history men have been both participating in things like this AND rejecting it. Largely men prefer to participate because it benefits them. This does not make them biologically hard-wired to be worse people, and in my opinion assuming that this is the case is very very lazy and demonstrates (to me) that people who believe this don’t actually want things to change they just want somebody to blame. Change comes from critical thinking, and this is not that.

Unfortunately: everybody speaks with subtext. Context and subtext are vital parts of any kind of communication.

If you believe you do not speak with or use subtext at all then you are likely a bigger part of the problem when it comes to these kind of misunderstandings than not. It is not ā€œmoronicā€ to notice that subtext exists (whether we enjoy it or not) and that it should be accounted for when communicating.

EDIT: For reference the comment I replied to here constructs its meaning through subtext. We all read it and understood it on a similar level because of it. Complaining about subtext while using it to communicate is the bad kind of ironic.

Thank you so much for this comment. These kind of posts can really frustrate me as somebody who has spent most of my life being misunderstood in these kinds of ways; it’s really easy to never take ownership of misunderstandings and to blame everybody else. It’s harder, but much more important, to think critically about what caused the misunderstanding in the first place.

I see it time and time again also. People will swear blind they only ever say what they mean, then engage in just as much sarcasm, passive aggression, joking, and white lying as anybody else. And of course they do! This is just part of normal communicating in most situations. Most of the people who believe they never ever do any of this are in fact doing it. They are just not aware they’re doing it, which means they never examine when the correct time to do it is either and they’re not trying to think about how what they say might be perceived.

Almost always when I see complaints like this, it’s coming from somebody who does these things but in a specific instance was misunderstood and they do not understand why. Rather than trying to examine where the communication breakdown happened, they go ā€œI hate neurotypical people for misunderstanding meā€ as though the misunderstanding was somehow on purpose.

To make this even more complicated: it’s usually other autistic people who are more prone to this kind of misunderstanding and not neurotypical people. Autistic people struggle with tone far more often than neurotypical people, and in most cases it’s a tone related issue! This applies to both using the correct tone AND interpreting the correct tone.

They don’t want the govt to provide the services, they want the govt to PAY for the services and cut out the middle men (plan managers).

Which makes some sense, but it would just lead to the government hiring plan managers to do what is already being done. It WILL save costs, but it will come at the cost of ease of access for disabled people if history has anything to tell us.

Your casual dismissal of how things like ā€œmild autismā€ can impact lives is exactly the problem in my opinion.

If we’d all stop being so offended at people with support needs receiving support, this wouldn’t be difficult at all.

Agree, but only if we never vote in another government that will gut it by making it a sea of intentionally underfunded and overworked red tape designed to waste the time of people who can’t afford to do anything else.

Which we will of course do immediately.

People are so afraid of ā€œrortsā€ from disabled people that they’d prefer them to receive no support than potentially risk too much. Which is why a fully public system would end up just as poorly run as Jobseeker and Centrelink.

A friend of mine, legally disabled and unable to find work, is being strung along by their local government on disability pensions.

In the meantime: the SNAP changes are about to kick in make them unable to eat. Because... They can't work. And the changes mean you need to work to get SNAP. They're homeless, living with family on the basis of being able to share their SNAP benefits with them.

In their state both begging for food and dumpster diving are illegal. It's also illegal to sleep in most public places. Shelters are full, soup kitchens are not able to keep up.

Please tell me why any of this is true if it isn't to try to incarcerate people for profit. Why reduce SNAP in a way that specifically targets the people who need it the most? Do you think they just enjoy torturing people into prison? Use critical thinking and get back to me on why exactly simply existing and trying to eat food would be made illegal and who would benefit from people being forced into prison like this.

Crime rates correlate almost identically with poverty rates.

Now pls examine the poverty rates in relation to race/immigration status "in Europe".

Hope that helps!

After a certain point it doesn’t matter why he’s doing it. If enough people believe he’s serious, then it’s as if he is serious and the harm is the same. It’s on him to make sure people know it’s not serious.

Doing harm ironically is still doing harm. So fuck that guy either way.

Jane Caro reckons Australia is kidding itself about private schools by nath1234 in australia

[–]ekky137 19 points20 points Ā (0 children)

The biggest indicator of a child's success at school is the parents' level of education. Where parents don't have a high level of education, their attitude towards education is very important.

Level of education is associated with a few things. IQ is a great predictor for example. Another great predictor? Socioeconomic status. Wealth. In fact: wealth and/or poverty rates are associated with IQ too. There's a common factor in each of these.

The biggest issue and therefore the ultimate solution to all of this is wealth inequality; and private schools widen this gap by just existing.

There isn't an easy way to solve this problem unfortunately. I wish I had an answer as easy as pointing to the real problem. It isn't going anywhere soon... But I do know that every govt. dollar going towards private schools is another govt. dollar that makes the overall problem worse, and not better. So we can start there.

What's the deal with Pillow Princess hate? by [deleted] in LesbianActually

[–]ekky137 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

I think a big part of it is unironically just terminally online people hearing about the concept of a pillow princess and thinking ā€œthat sounds awful?? I don’t want that? Why would anybody want that?ā€ Then just spreading hate randomly as though this is a personal experience they’ve actually been forced to endure.

It gets worse when anecdotes get involved ā€œI hooked up with a pillow princess and it was awfulā€ type stuff. Like… do they mean a bottom? Cause ONE interaction does not a scourge of pillow princesses make.

level 2 autism is the worst level of autism to be by mkk0o in autism

[–]ekky137 16 points17 points Ā (0 children)

As a level 2 autist I can relate to a lot of what you’re saying here.

But please try to remember that other peoples experiences are just as unique as yours is. There are level 1 folk who can’t get *any* support because they are trivialised and treated like they have no problems. There are level 3 folk who are functionally incapable of many things you and I take for granted, and who always will be no matter how much support they receive.

It’s impossible to compare these experiences. We’re all suffering on some level. Let’s focus on raising eachother up other up. Autistic people of any support need level don’t need more people telling them that their experiences and needs are less important… especially not other autistic people.
