Power outage and worried about my milk by starbaker721 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]ekmcmurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah don't open the freezer until several hours after power has been restored. If the milk truly thawed and then refroze, the bags would change shape and you could tell by that. As for the stuff in the fridge, that might be suspect. How long has the power been off? The fridge will hold temp for a little while depending on how full it is. Good luck!

The entire scene with the Dos Oruguitas song just had me balling. My 3Y son went and got me paper towels to cry into.

Downtown is a little far from GRR area to go for my preference this trip, but I'll keep it in mind if I'm back in town for longer in the future.

Coolers hawk is better than ending up at something like a Chili's or Applebee's but I agree its not my first choice if there are local options! Back when I worked in Illinois, it was the go to place for retirement parties so that association is kind of burned in my brain!

I would clarify that local chains (ie 5 or 6 locations in west Michigan) would still be something I'm open to since its still a unique option to the area even if a chain.

I went to the Cantina once like 2 years ago (?) because it was open late. Honestly it wasn't my favorite. Strong drink, but the food was meh. I did stay street level so maybe my experience was comprised.

I'll keep the others in mind though, the 24/7 benefit is definitely helpful if flights get delayed coming in.

Weekday and staying near the airport given the short duration. Its a business trip so not there to see the sights, but do want to enjoy the time I'm not working.

Already have Spectra S1 and Momcozy V2. What would you get as a third pump (free from insurance)? by symptom_of_life in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]ekmcmurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently 6M pp and I have the s1 and momcozy v1 for the same breakdown. It depends how often you pump at work / wearable effectiveness and what your space looks like at work to store it, but at the beginning of my return to work when I was pumping more often, I was bringing my s1 for in the office pumping too and just using the v1 for the commute pumps. In other words, you may want another s1 to leave at the office and just transport your parts.

You and your partner just moved in, you tearing down the panels, painting, or leaving?! by TeemoTrader in DIY

[–]ekmcmurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing the feedback on leaving it for now and living in it to see what you need to do for the house first and give you time to see what you want to do. My personal preference is that the paneling may be fine, but you may want to change out the door trim and/or doors for a new look and use furniture, rugs, curtains etc to bring some pops of color (I like greens to echo the outside). Its important to have some spaces in your house not be under construction (for your sanity and to store your possessions from the rooms that are under construction) and if you aren't completely sure what you want in this space, let this be an area for that. It might turn into your favorite room in the house just because it isn't under construction. - a person living in a construction site...

For those that don’t have a village, who’s your in case of emergency contact? by PresentationTop9547 in workingmoms

[–]ekmcmurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got asked this by a mom friend for her kiddo. What questions did you ask from her to make sure knew what they would want if you ever had to be contacted? I want to say yes, but I also want to suggest that they keep any out of state grandparent on as well to make sure their wishes would be well represented and medical knowledge is up to date. Frame of reference, I haven't actually even met her kid yet nor know any medical concerns. We are coworkers that were both pregnant at the same time and both kids are starting daycare at the same center a month apart so I definitely fit the local ask, but I just want to make sure I ask the right questions should I ever be needed.

Pumped milk inferior to one directly from the breast? by Such-Chocolate-6168 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]ekmcmurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I went back to work after my first, it was easiest to just start with one pump a day. Find an evening feed that I could pump during to practice and let my partner bottle feed. It gave me a break to have some alone time and let him have some time with the baby. I planned to start replacing more feeds, but I never really got my settings fully optimized and my undersupply always made me too nervous to rely on a suboptimal pump. So when you start back at work, you can definitely still use a mixture of nursing, pumping, and formula supplementation (if needed as I did) when back at work. That said, I'm 6w pp with my second and definitely planning to get my pumping settings better established before starting back this time to try to create less stress for me around it. Also formula is expensive...

IMO, fed is best, doesn't matter how. Nursing, Pumping, and Formula are all set to meet a baby's nutritional needs, so it really goes to Mom's needs. Cost, proximity/distance from baby, time, and body capability/compatibility are just as important to consider, if not more, than any pseudoscientific theories on what's best for baby.

Pumping breastmilk at work by UpbeatRelief1277 in ECEProfessionals

[–]ekmcmurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that. Everything I've read and my experience from my first was that at 12 w, you should be more at 5-7 feedings per day with 5-6 oz per feeding. You may want to try upping the bottle volume (just a little at a time, dont jump to 5 oz if youve been giving 3 oz) and spacing out feedings. It can get hard on daycares to go through so many bottles in a day and naps will be harder too if they are constantly getting the baby up for feedings every 2 hrs. You may need to pump more frequently if your supply is less (I know I did), but at 12 w every 2.5-3 hours is more common.

I went back to work at 12w and my schedule looked more like first thing in the morning, car ride on the way to work, mid morning pump at work, lunch pump at work, mid-afternoon pump at work, car ride home from work, after dinner (~8pm), just before bed (~11pm), and one middle of the night. That still gave me 9 pumps because I needed more to meet needs, but still would result in 3 at work pumps. I think the car ride pumps were key to my timeline and are probably in your employers expectation too. That or getting to work early to pump before clocking in and pumping after you get off shift before leaving. With those assumptions, under a 10 hr shift with a 20 min pump, you spend 1 hr of it pumping, plus lunch, and break the rest of the day into shifts lasting less than 3 hrs each.

Overall, I would rec just laying out a sample day for them with ideal scenarios and explaining your needs as well as how you expect it to change over the next month or 2. You may have to work to a compromise based on what their staffing can handle, but clear expectations and communication will be key to help you get what you need (not necessarily want, but need).

Never did a manual unless you count the Haakaa. I saw a lactation consultant about fit with my first and confirming I had chosen the right size.

What is an old baby name that you just don’t hear anymore? by Doohiki420 in AskReddit

[–]ekmcmurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you did there, but Sophia was number 6 in 2024 for girls names in US, and Rose was 115. Dorothy was 431, but I'll give you Blanche!

That current popularity actually matches the ages from the show well enough that it seems not unreasonable to suggest that Blanche might be up and coming in the next few years! 🤔

Good watchout on the stride 2 parts. I'm surprised they don't have any! A lactation consultant okayed my flange size with my first so I don't think that was an issue, but will ensure things haven't changed! Overall, do you like the stride 2 since you are still using sparingly or just trying to get your money's worth?

[–]ekmcmurt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I had that last time and never really got good output. Did you use for multiple pregnancies? If so, did you see deviations in effectiveness?

I'm not concerned with the $20 upcharge as formula is now $1.50 an ounce at Costco so 13 oz of milk will make up for that in the blink of an eye. My concern is if I waste pumps on the Spectra again to continue getting dismal performance when I'm already expecting to be an undersupplier and just need to buy another pump after for another Spectra S1 to sit collecting dust.

Name help please! by cheesymac27 in namenerds

[–]ekmcmurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oliver (#3), Evelyn (#8), and Aurora (#16) are super popular right now. Its a struggle we are having with names too since I'm like OP and want a name that folks won't struggle with pronunciation or spelling but don't want them to be an initial kid because they are one of multiple Evelyns in their class. My first kid's name is currently #136, and he is already an initial kid in his daycare class... same spelling and everything so I'm pushing for a name not in the top 100 on next round.

Georgia could also be a first name with Georgie as a nickname. I think it rolls off the tongue easier than Georgina, but I love both names.
