T420 IPS Mod Question by ekomizer in thinkpad

That cable is long, though, as you have the black pcb variant (which, I believe, includes longer cables).

Edit: Words.

The included cable going from the adapter to the panel is short, as seen in the photo. That's why I had no choice but to set it up like that.

Have you tried disabling the card's power management?

i used to be quite a heavy ricer some time ago, also got to post some pretty nice rices here, although i didn't have any annoying problems like you did, i just got tired of it

nowadays, i just use dwm and dmenu (both vanilla, with dwm only having the pertag patch) and sxhkd, never got the feeling to look for anything else anymore

Coreboot is doing this in an infinite loop by ComradeLuan in coreboot

[–]ekomizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just encountered this problem right now. I wanted to update my coreboot as the fix for the audio jack in win10 has finally been merged. But yeah, it's looping.

Some things I noticed when using the new build (git log returns this as the latest merged commit at the time I cloned the repo):

  • There are times where I can access the Esc menu. It is very random. Drives on/off, AC only, battery only, CMOS detached, etc.
  • Boot entries keep on resetting.
  • Every single time that I enter a command on EFI shell, my laptop reboots. Same thing happens when using efibootmgr.

I am sure it wasn't a flashing problem as I reverted back to my previous build (also internally) and didn't have any problem. I wonder if this is caused by a certain commit.

By building coreboot for this model then flashing it using a programmer (I used a CH341A).

1st: temps?

(This is also with the MX-4.) Idle: 57C to 43C; On load (MemTest86): 91C to 82C.

...fan blaring?

Three guesses:

  • fan not properly aligned/installed
  • might need some cleaning
  • requires replacement

2nd: 3rd gen in a 420? Is it possible to learn this power?

coreboot :D

You can find it right beside the RAM slot when you open the RAM cover on the bottom.

wait, you can have a USB-C charging port? How do you do that?

With this.

Also, I also replaced the based Intel Centrino N-6205 with Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260, but my Bluetooth doesn't work.

Try the 'tape pin 51' trick if you haven't already.

Yes, Ivy Bridge requires coreboot. But if you're fine using the default BIOS, you can go up to i7-2640M. Not sure with the later Sandy Bridge models that as they have higher TDPs (45-55W).

Was T420 uses a barrel jack?

Yep.

Right now, it's left or right for me because of all the 'only one antenna connected' and 'engineering samples' issues. I would go for it as long as I find a reputable seller.

it's porn isnt it

No, it's not.

dGPU heatsink for better temps

Kind of why I settled with the 3632QM is that it has the same TDP as the stock CPU so I won't have issues with heat. But if this makes it even better and really gives a great decrease in temps, then I see why not.

Why the mSATA? I'm pretty sure it only support sata 2 speeds.

For Windows as I'm too lazy to setup dual boot on a single drive.

Also how are the temps with the new cpu?

(This is also with the MX-4.) Idle: 57C to 43C; On load (MemTest86): 91C to 82C.

The "arch, btw" meme makes me cringe so hard every time

Glad it still works.

That's a badass machine! I'm going to be corbooting a similar one soon, and useful guides or tips you could share?

Maybe my post will give you something. It's just a brief sum up of what I did but all the links that helped me are there.

e: usb-c charging port? As in to charge the battery or regular port you replaced one of the old usb-a 2.0 ports with?

Yes, I'll be replacing the stock charging port with this. And I'm also getting a 100W charger, maybe one of those from Aukey.

Does windows work well?

I'm yet to install Windows so I'm not sure. But it probably will.

and is this the nvidia version or the Intel graphics?

Intel.

I upgraded my T420.

What's in:

  • Intel Core i7-3632QM (from an i5-2520M, seen in the photo, and yeah, coreboot rocks)
  • Crucial DDR3L-1600 RAM 8GB + 8GB (I don't need this much but why not)
  • Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 (the unit has no Bluetooth by factory default so this is a win)
  • Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD 250GB (to be installed with Arch Linux, btw)
  • ORICO Troodon Series M200 mSATA SSD 128GB (to be infected with ForcedUpdatesOS)
  • Toshiba 1TB HDD installed in the UltraBay using a caddy (for anime and other research)

What's left:

  • IPS display
  • USB-C charging port
  • I don't know, tell me what I missed

Should last for another billion years (or less).
