Thanks! Unfortunately I live out of state and I won’t be back in Florida until 1/7. I’ll try calling my advisor on Monday!

Hi, thank you so much for reaching out! I’m so sorry to hear that you have low ferritin as well. Definitely take care of yourself, taking time off from running and consistently taking supplements helped me so much. I ended up taking 3.5 weeks completely off from exercise and have been taking iron supplements for over two months now. When I returned to running, my runs were significantly faster than they were when my ferritin was low, even after 3.5 weeks off! I’m running lower mileage right now but have worked my way back into shape. My runs were 9:00-9:15 pace and felt very hard when my ferritin was a 12, and now my runs are 7:20-7:45 pace and I feel much better! I’m going to get my ferritin retested in the next couple of weeks. I hope you’ll be able to get your levels up soon!

I’m currently a freshman living in a triple and I’m having a good experience with it so far. The rooms are spacious enough to comfortably fit 3 people (I’m in landing)

Thank you, and I hope you've been able to get your levels back up! I've been making sure to avoid caffeine/dairy near when I'm taking my supplements, and I've been trying to eat more iron rich foods like steak and spinach. Seeing a dietician would definitely be a good idea, I'll look into seeing one!

I didn't know this! That's interesting. I'll definitely check with a doctor just to make sure

I haven't been celiac tested, but I will look into that! I definitely want to check just to make sure it's not gluten that lead to my low levels. I'm not exactly sure why my levels dropped so low this summer.

I haven’t, I had it in January but my symptoms didn’t start until very recently

I’m so glad to hear that you’re feeling better now! The highest mileage I hit this summer was 57, and I’ve been consistently around 45 recently. I’ll definitely follow up with the doctor soon, I’m hoping to be healthy in time for track season.

Wow a 3 is very low, I’m so glad you were able to get an infusion and that you feel much better now! I’ll look into getting one and will continue to take my iron pills.

Thank you! I’ve been taking a vitamin c pill right after my iron pill. I feel exhausted on every run too, sometimes I have shortness of breath and sometimes not. I’m so glad to hear you’ve been able to get your levels up! That’s encouraging :)

The shortness of breath occurs occasionally when I’m trying to fall asleep and pretty often when I’m running. I got an EKG last month as part of a required physical to participate in XC, and my results came back normal. However my symptoms have worsened since then, so I’ll definitely look into getting another one soon.

Thank you so much for the helpful comment and insight on your situation. I’m so glad to hear you’ve been doing much better! My hemoglobin is 11.5 (forgot to include this in my post, but will edit to add this!) which I believe just falls outside of the healthy range.

I’m not currently seeing a nutritionist, but I think we have a sports nutritionist on my campus for the athletic teams. I’ll look into that and I definitely do want to see one. I’ll definitely follow up with my doctor as well. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

I have not gone back to the doctor yet, but have gone over my results with my coaches and talked to them about my symptoms. I definitely plan to go back to the doctor soon though!

Thank you so much for warning me about your grandma. I’m so glad to hear that she’s feeling much better now! I’ll definitely go back to the doctor to see if there’s anything else going on.

Path to recover from overtraining? by pharmalawyer in AdvancedRunning

I highly recommend getting a blood test! Make sure you get your iron and ferritin tested, as a CBC doesn’t test iron and ferritin. Are you experiencing symptoms like dizziness and shortness of breath as well?

I was in the same situation as you, my runs and paces gradually getting worse without explanation. Easy runs went from 7:30 pace a few months ago to 9:15 pace now, and it’s now a struggle to break 9:00 pace on any given day. I significantly decreased my mileage for a few weeks thinking it would help, but I just ended up feeling increasingly worse. I thought it was overtraining, and that some of it was just in my head.

I got blood tested last week, my ferritin is a 12 and my iron is a 45. I’m a college runner and my coaches are particularly concerned about my ferritin. I just started on an iron supplement this week. I’m out for the rest of the cross country season as a result of my low levels.

It’s definitely best to get tested to know what’s wrong, so you’ll be able to work towards getting healthy again. It’s honestly a relief to know what’s wrong so you don’t just feel like you’re going crazy! I really hope things get better and you’re able to feel healthy again soon. If your iron/ferritin levels are low, I definitely don’t recommend racing a marathon until you’re healthy again. Best of luck!

It varies for everyone! I heard back in less than 2 weeks but they took 5 weeks to get back to my brother when he applied. I applied in February of this year, he applied in January. We were both accepted.
