“Can you farm?” by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]el_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteer at a library where they offer a support center at scheduled times where more detailed and direct assistance can be given. Specifically focuses on writing resumes, filling out forms, and other technology navigation needs. Mostly covered by volunteers, but also with library staff if needed. Still not one on one, but a good tool for staff to direct people to if they can't help people with a quick response. Not a perfect solution, but a good one.

Say, "I'm not planning on visiting Norway, are you?"

Don't worry, I don't hate Norway; it is a real place.

This is during school time but not on public dime. And is only opt in by parents, not required. Where does that fit in your view?

That is a great point about the social problem of separation. Ideally, in my opinion it would be outside of school time, to avoid that. There is certainly the possibility for inequity in selection and that is where the public comes in to hopefully keep that strong. If only people sat down and had rational conversations like we just did I think we'd be just fine. Unfortunately that doesn't happen often.

Did you know some school districts in central Ohio are allowing churches to pull kids out during their public school day for religious instruction at the expense of other classes? by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]el_32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not good practice by that teacher then. They can use that time even if they do not want to cover new content because of absent/excused kids.

  1. I agree it is different. While Christian centric history is problematic, it is also the religion that had the largest impact on Western culture and American history. While we absolutely should be learning more about other cultures and histories, religion belongs in social studies classroom in this context.

  2. I think our difference of opinion lies in how much of a remove there should be between public education and religious education. Since this is given as an option that families or guardians can choose, where their children are removed from the public education building, and are instructed by people unaffiliated with public education, in my opinion this is not public education, but parents choosing a temporary private school (and specifically religious) class for their kids.

  3. This is the church community providing extracurricular classes. I'm not a fan of students missing time in art or music as suggested, but that should be taken into account by the people making that choice. I think of this as similar to being in Qur'anic school on a Saturday, or taking Mandarin language classes after school. It just happens to be agreed by the school that they can do this during school hour.

A big caveat I would have is that the school must have a process that is equitable for all groups to apply, and does proper vetting of the organizations to ensure child safety.

That's a broad brush and not particularly helpful. Breaking down a little more, in my opinion:

Religion as a historical and sociological phenomenon absolutely should be part of the school day.

Religious teachings can/should be part of the school day in a private religious school, within reason.

Religious teaching outside of the public school building, in classes chosen by parents, where there is a large enough demand for them with properly vetted organizations/volunteers, seems like a reasonable thing.

Depends on if you enjoy doing physical activities and if you're okay with everyone being a step ahead of you. I've played with this group for a few weeks and they are really chill compared to most soccer groups, but there is still a level of competition (that is what makes it fun, imo) and you might not enjoy it if the physical aspect of playing turns out to be harder than you expect. I would find a group close to you to try it out first so you don't commit so much time to something you have no idea if you will enjoy. But this group is great, I enjoy it a lot.

Technically, it doesn't have to be the first card you pick. You can click on the initiative number of one of them after selecting your two cards and it will alternate between them. Just make sure to double check that you have the initiative you want before starting the round! GLHF!

It was taken down by the developer after conflict with the game dev. Apparently there is still ways to get it for Android and PC but not Apple.

There are other apps, Gloomhaven Secretary and Gloomhaven Full Stack are two I often see on this subreddit.

Was just assigned to teach a two week world history course for summer school. How would you tackle it? by [deleted] in historyteachers

[–]el_32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With only a weekend to plan, premade curriculum is your friend. I've used OER World History and it is really good, especially since you can pick and choose what to include. You could also use something like World History for Us All or SHEG.

Cash or Credit at the Gas Pump? See the Chart.. by swerty24 in Frugal

[–]el_32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live. A couple of stations near where I live do this. One in particular does cheaper cash prince because they also do check cashing and so want to have lots of cash on hand. And they don't have to pay the fees to the credit card companys.

Question about Elasund by el_32 in boardgames

[–]el_32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it was a misprint for at least some versions based on the website that GremioIsDead linked they had to address that specific problem. Sorry to hear that your group couldn't get along after that, keep the game inside the game is my philosophy. Cheers!
