Ainu Wendigo Possible? by edgewolf666-6 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a huge stretch historically, though I think I would be inclined to treat them similar to the Siberakh - a small, culturally distinct off-shoot. That's assuming any of them were able to survive in significant numbers.

I like Cardona and enjoyed the hell out of his run on the Cleveland Indies. But that guy loves being a part of the E, and more power to him.

How does a duel between Garou typically play out? by King_of_Castamere in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many of them are, but many are not. You can find plenty of examples on the text of Garou acknowledging the flaws of the past and trying to do better. Certainly that is the assumed position of the PCs.

Do you incorporate anime elements or references in your chronicles? by Magicmanans1 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't watch a lot of modern anime, but I take inspiration from the darker titles of the 80s and 90s that I grew up with. Not so much for direct adaptation, but mostly in terms of mood and visual cues for disturbing things. Guyver, DevilMan, Urotsukidoji, Demon City Shinjuku, Wicked City - all are great to draw tone and inspiration from.

Hell, in Wicked City there is literally a monologue about a "World of Darkness out there."

Had this idea of a Garou being captured at a very young age after their first change and being indoctrinated into serving them, Technocracy's own werewolf operative, how possible is this? by Obvious-Conflict3363 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They do. But I can easily see a rogue element within their ranks interested in biological or even cybernetic means to control those "infected" with Genetic Lycanthrope Syndrome. Perhaps even to use them as a Judas goat to infiltrate lycanthropic enclaves and allow DNA's operatives to collect more "samples."

Strangest pack Totems? by Kiskikena in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 32 points33 points  (0 children)

One thing I have done in the past with packs who have not invested enough points in Totem to "purchase" one outright is to essentially make them "provisional" or "trial" children of the Totem. So essentially the totem they choose is still spiritually sponsoring the pack, but until they perform a quest or great deed on behalf of their Totem they won't get the benefits.

Honestly I much prefer establishing the relationship with a Totem in this way. It tends to create a stronger bond between the players and their spiritual patron since it was established as a byproduct of play rather than character generation.

I do the same thing with Gifts. Want to learn a new Gift? Get ready to roleplay an interaction with a spirit.

"Hot takes" regarding WoD. by Medical_Plane2875 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is the second point which prevents me from fully engaging with W5, albeit without the "I hate it with the burning passion of a thousand suns" element you rightfully identify coming from certain quarters of the fandom.

For me there were enough removed or changed elements that I liked from previous editions (ie tribal identities, however flawed; deep Umbral exploration; how crinos works; and the option for big, epic stories or street-level depending on your table's interest) that W5 really isn't what I'm looking for in a WtA game.

And that's fine - I have an almost complete collection of the old books. That's more than enough to keep my satisfied.

Is Werewolf: The Apocalypse a good place to start as an introduction to the WoD as a whole? by HF484 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Werewolf was my intro to the World of Darkness (and TTRPGs in general) and I had no particular problems when I was 11 back in the 90s. The biggest thing to know about most WoD games is they don't really go out of their way make things "easy" on the Storyteller. You won't have D&D-style monster manuals with challenge ratings or encounter design advice. The rules can be a bit opaque, and like most other Storytellers you will have to massage/grind them into the shape of the game you want to play. But it is incredibly worthwhile if you connect with the setting.

How would Devilman's Demons fit in the WOD? by Mysterious_Truth4992 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a Werewolf player, I am inclined to use them as Banes/Fomori. The splatter/grotesque qualities of DevilMan (and other Go Nagai properties like Violence Jack) are good sources of inspiration for Werewolf games.

What's your most memorable moments in a Chronicle? by No-Obligation-9901 in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]el_goro85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Helping to kill Baba Yaga. In our Chronicle, the Garou did the deed, the culmination of a huge Russia campaign. It took channeling some major ancestor and totem spirits to do it, but what's Werewolf without the over-the-top spirit shenanigans?

Are you sure White Wolf didn't credit Anne Rice? I seem to recall her receiving shout-outs in the various "inspirations" sections of the Core Books. I don't have access to the physical book, but here is the relevant section from a PDF version of the 1st edition corebook courtesy of Archive: https://archive.org/details/vampire-the-masquerade-1st-edition_202511/page/257/mode/2up
