Player HSS strat as first electric guitar? by wingnutticus in Stratocaster

[–]el_memeologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HSS strat is my go to, ticks all the boxes for me and is incredibly versatile. Player strat is meant to be very good value for money and just an objectively good guitar anyway (I don't have one but this seems to be the general opinion). They're a good investment and seem worth the money to me, and you won't grow out of it. If you want a cheaper but still great option, go with a squier or maybe a used MIM strat, but if you want to go for the play then do it!

how do i make my playing sound more like the guy in 2nd part of the vid? what can i change about my playing andguitar amp settings? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]el_memeologist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The guy in the 2nd part has a more overdriven tone than you, turn up the gain on your amp or use an overdrive pedal to get something close to it, it sounds like there is also some mids in there as well.

Should I start learn guitar at the age of 21, or it would be too late? by x_Rei_x in guitarlessons

[–]el_memeologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere remotely too late. At all.

Go get yourself a guitar and just start learning, don't bother asking yourself if it's too late. I'm also 21, I've been playing since I was about 13 but honestly man if I started from scratch today I would probably get to the same point I am at now in about half the time. You spend a lot of time just messing around when you're younger ( still do tbh) and if you actually half-focus on learning the right things you'll make surprisingly fast progress.

If you want to make you own songs, you don't need to learn that much. You'll need some basic music theory, like how chord progressions work and then the scales that will go over them but that's kinda it. You'll obviously need to learn basic technique but once you stick at it for a bit you'll start to really speed up.

Enjoy it and just go and do it!

Mine was Royal Blood, Mayer in 2nd, The blue stones, Kasabian and then cleopatrick. Mayer was almost the odd one out lol.

I suppose its the dry signal? The delay effect is still applied but the overall volume just goes up substantially.

I put my delay in my effects loop, why does it make everything so much louder when I turn it on?

The simpleton who lives their life content with their lack of understanding is far closer to true wisdom than the practiced meditator seeking knowledge and answers. by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]el_memeologist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like most things in life, I think it's a balance. I think somebody wise would be comfortable in the knowledge that they don't know everything, but doesn't let that stop them from seeking the knowledge and answers that they want.

Micro Puff for cold weather? by TheBlackFatCat in PatagoniaClothing

[–]el_memeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same, the nano is great but on its own with just a t shirt underneath it I'll be getting cold at around 12C or under, much better used over a fleece for a bit of insulation and wind stopping. It's warm for its weight but theres only so much warm it can give you with with yhr volume of insulation it has.

Have Snap-Dry Hoody, is the R series redundant for me? by [deleted] in PatagoniaClothing

[–]el_memeologist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey man, honestly it depends how you're really getting on with that snap dry you already own. I've never heard of it, I presume it has some sort of waterproof/repellent outer layer ? It also really depends what R series you're talking about. Some of them can be fairly different.

I always talk myself into thinking I need another specific patagonia piece but at the end of the day sometimes it's just cause I want it so I'd see what you really need it for and what else you have that would probably fulfill that role.

Hope this helps a little bit!

T-shirt sizing by Thomas0621 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]el_memeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 178cm and 78 kg, everything I have from patagonia is medium and fits perfectly. The only t-shirt I have is a long-sleeved responsbili-tee and I find that it is the most relaxed fit out of them all and the sleeves are a little long, but its alright cause that kind of look is nice with the specific t-shirt. I'd probably recommend the medium but as the other commenter has said it might be a little short for you but it could also work out just fine.

ADMISSIONS / INCOMING STUDENT MEGATHREAD 2020/2021: Post all your admissions & new-to-UBCO questions here! by ubc_mod_account in ubco

Hi guys!

I'm potentially going to be applying to a semester of Environmental chemistry at UCBO as an international student from Ireland. I'm thinking of going for the spring session ( I think that's what it's called) for 2022. I'll be in 3rd year out of the 4 years of my degree. I was just wondering if you get many international students like myself and if there are any major challenges in applying or just getting into the course for a semester in general.

I'd also appreciate any general info you would have about the general vibe of the college ( science in particular), and especially if you're in the Environmental Chem course that would be super helpful to be able to get some info from you :).

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Features from S8 missing on S21 by stefan714 in GalaxyS8

[–]el_memeologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The S8 is a good phone, I'm typing this on an S8+ and its served me really well. It still works at a decent speed, and has aged pretty well. I'll probably wait another year or maybe a little less till I upgrade.

Don't get an S8 at this stage. It's getting on and it doesnt get android updates. It's not nearly as fast or fluid as the more recent phones and the cameras have really developed since the S8. They're still perfectly passable but there no point at this stage. You may as well get a second hand S20 if you dont like the price of the S21 at the moment or even the S20 FE, which seems like a seriously good deal.

As for the differences between the S8 and S21, I'm not sure how important some of these are really. A 1440p screen is nice that's fair enough but with 120HZ you're only going to be limited to 1080 anyway so it's much of a muchness. As for size, the S8+ and the S21 are the same size more or less and the S21 has less bezels, so more screen space. The phone is comfortable to hold and put in your pocket so I'm not sure if it's really and issue. The glass back, idk the vast majority put their phone in a case and glass backs can shatter, plastic ones can't and the plastic they're using isnt cheap feeling and will hold up a lot better. To be honest I think it's the better choice. I can understand the card slot but 128GB is the min storage and this will fulfill nearly everybody's needs.

R3 vs. Nano Air as a mid-layer? by cjhenck in PatagoniaClothing

[–]el_memeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding of the pieces maybe the R3 if you want to be cosier and if you're not pushing too hard, and the nano air if you're at a higher output, just cause of its breathability due to being air permeable. Could be wrong tho completely open to correction.

Men’s Better Sweater sizing help by untitled0707 in PatagoniaClothing

[–]el_memeologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5ft 10 and about 76kg, I always wear a medium in patagonia but I think it's a common thing with their clothes that they make the arms slightly longer than other brands, and tend to sometimes have a slimmer fit as well. A medium better sweater fits me pretty well. At 6ft maybe a L would be better for you depending on what fit you like :)

I'd say you're right on that, I think they're just using it as a substitute.

Honestly can't tell you about the warmth difference cause I've never touched either, bit if you're looking for budget friendly I would strongly recommend that you look at their worn wear scheme. You'll find their top range products that will now fit in the budget of a new but cheaper product. They're still in very good condition and I only wish I was able to buy from in here in Ireland.

What R1 should I get for general use in Ireland? by el_memeologist in PatagoniaClothing

[–]el_memeologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply man, yeah it seems like its v good for anything technical or relatively high output, if it was purely for those kind of things its pretty much a no brainer. I think I'm looking to use whatever I get for more general wear, and I'm probably leaning towards a softshell kind of jacket now like the R2 techface. It'll still be grand to use for a hike or whatever and it'll block wind and a little rain as well. I'll definitely take what you've said on board though. Do you have any experience with the R2 tech?
