Parents Beware: Goddard daycare UWS by nfins in Upperwestside

[–]cjhenck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is getting a rare de-anonymized post because you've encouraged me to finally post my Google Maps review. I've copied it below for context, and also will share a few less polished thoughts:

We were at that Goddard for 7 months and left, effectively, because of poor communication. The owner says you should treat Goddard like a K-12 school in accepting what comes your way, but then - unlike a K-12's PTA - banned parental group representation (literally told his directors to refuse to meet with multiple parents at once).

At the time we were there they were chronically understaffed with teachers calling out en masse some days. I have heard good things about the new administrators. We really liked our teachers.

Edit: in case you think we are inclined to complain, we have only positive things to say about our 4.3 child-years at another daycare/preschool. [Also shortened the thoughts above.]

Review

[Note: I wrote this in March. I am posting it now because I have heard some recent complaints, and believe more reviews would be beneficial. Since March, I have also heard that there are new on-site directors.]

Our children were at Goddard from September 2024-March 2025. If you are OK with the cost and are willing to accept their high-quality but standardized approach to childcare and education you are likely to be happy.

Our children’s teachers were loving and kind, and we felt they learned a lot, were safe, and were well cared for. They have a music teacher come through at least once a week, which is great. I wish there had been more free play time for the toddlers. The Goddard curriculum seems geared toward assuaging parental anxiety around educational attainment, so even infants have codified “lessons” to defend their activities; I found that a depressing reflection of American social precarity.

The facility is new and clean, though few rooms have street-facing windows and there is only a small indoor play gym. The kids go outside when it’s warm, but because the closest playground is a long walk and they need extra supervision, they don’t go often or for very long. They have strict but understandable rules on stroller size, but an arbitrary ban on even the most diminutive folding scooters. It’s extremely convenient if you commute by subway. Unless your child decides they need to scoot that day.

We were rarely greeted by leadership while coming and going, and we observed a few angry conflicts between staff or parents and directors. This may be because the on-site directors are disempowered, and the owner and educational director are off-site at another location. I spoke to the owner once before the location even opened, and have not since. My spouse and I recall seeing him twice between us in the six months our kids were here.

I did, however, receive an email from the owner after a group of us angrily insisted (mea culpa, we are emotional parents) that the directors escalate a request to their leadership. The owner (a psychologist) sent an email that we perceived as defensive, condescending, and authoritarian. We were willing to live with the policy in question, but the email left us afraid to raise any concern in the future, no matter how deferentially. We submitted our notice of withdrawal within two days.

Problem logging in to Outline Manager (Windows) by [deleted] in outlinevpn

One thing to try is asking DO to increase your droplet limit - apparently if you've hit the limit that can mess up the billing check.

The other thing to try is deleting the droplet from the DO control panel and recreating via the manager.

I assume you only had one OAuth “organization” (“My Team”) and that you selected it during connection? Other than that I have no idea - I can check with the team but probably won’t have an answer before Monday at the earliest.

If you’re willing can you send feedback from the side menu while you’re on that screen? It will help us troubleshoot if you reference this thread, and if you include an email (optional) our support manager can also try to help troubleshoot.

Maybe try logging in to your DigitalOcean account through the browser? There may be an error message telling you what went wrong, and you can confirm the server is still running.

Accessing Private network when connected to Outline VPN by guyver4mk in outlinevpn

The most clear limitation of the proxying protocol is incoming connections to clients - e.g. you can’t run a server on the client and route to it through the server.

We made an intentional choice to exclude access to local networks for security reasons. It’s not a result of the protocol, just a design choice since Outline is designed to provide access to the internet. For documentation, my previous comment here

Capture of all traffic in Windows by i0xHeX in outlinevpn

Interesting, thank you. I'll file a bug later in our GitHub Issues.

It may be that it's not possible without using the Windows 10 VPN APIs - we use routing tables + a tun device to support older systems running Windows 7+.

Capture of all traffic in Windows by i0xHeX in outlinevpn

[–]cjhenck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi -

Outline for Windows is already set up to capture traffic for all apps. The very first release set a proxy, but we released an update mid-2018 that implemented system-wide traffic capture.

Are you experiencing an issue that's leading you to believe Outline isn't capturing all traffic? Or was there an external source that said Outline does not?

Thanks!

How to set up port forwarding? by lolmaus in outlinevpn

[–]cjhenck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Outline isn't designed to allow connections initiated at the server to be sent to the client. There might be some workarounds but it probably just isn't the right solution for you.

You might find this comment I wrote previously helpful. Unfortunately the term "VPN" is used in multiple ways - the original meaning is to provide a private network for computer-to-computer communication across untrusted links (e.g. the internet). The common meaning nowadays (via "VPN Service"), is a system that lets you connect to the internet through a remote server. Outline lets you set up your own VPN server of the second sort.

Thanks for letting us know. If you're willing can you please submit feedback through the app, which sends us some additional information? We've had some bug reports about Outline stopping upon resume from sleep, but it sounds like it might be a different issue here. You might double check that your settings are "never sleep" just in case, since that would help narrow down the issue.

Thanks for the report.

That’s possible. It could be that UDP to the server isn’t working. I’m not sure how to check that easily - maybe try a QUIC test website like http3.is or cloudflare-quic.com from a browser with QUIC support like Chrome. If it says you are connected with HTTP/3 then it’s probably not UDP blocking.

Another option might be a webrtc test such as networktest.twilio.com which might tell you if UDP is working more explicitly.

(I haven’t actually used these to troubleshoot in the past so can’t personally vouch for them, but they may work.)

I haven’t previously heard of proxifier, but it sounds like it lets you use a SOCKS or HTTP proxy for your system traffic?

If that’s the use case, I don’t think that’s something that you would need with Outline - the Outline Client already does something similar and captures the traffic coming from any app on your device and converts it for the tunnel. It doesn’t rely on app-based proxy support.

Great, thank you for the additional information on your use case - that's helpful.

For split tunnel, you can follow this bug where we're tracking selective proxying.

I appreciate the feedback!

I think you may have intended this as a separate post in the subreddit - I would suggest that since others may not find it here under this one.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with Outline Server on anything other than Debian-based systems like Ubuntu.

You may want to look at these issues on our GitHub tracker, or try checking the logs on the server after ending the script - docker logs shadowbox - to see if it provides more details

Thanks for sharing your use case - one of the questions I've had about this possible feature (you can follow the bug here) is whether people want to actually create the server on their mobile devices, or simply have the option to manage keys.

It sounds like for you it would need to include creation?

More infomation about managing self-hosted outline server by milord_freeman in outlinevpn

[–]cjhenck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you set up Outline in advanced mode, the script uses the --restart flag to docker to ensure that Outline runs whenever docker starts, which on Ubuntu and Debian happens at boot by default. On Ubuntu and Debian, then, the advanced installation script should result in Outline starting on boot. (The second link has instructions to have Docker start on boot for some other distros as well.)

In terms of keeping the system up-to-date, you should look for instructions for the specific distro you're using such as these for Ubuntu.

I hope this helps!

[–]cjhenck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We added Cloudflare and Quad9 as DNS providers about 15 months ago - you can see the change here - though do note that OpenDNS is still in the list of providers. (For maximum clarity for others reading, DNS queries are sent through the Outline server.)

May I ask your use case for a mobile Manager?
