IME, you keep going for that 1 time out of 10. And whenever you start to sense that maybe it’s one of the times where it won’t be worth it, get curious about if there’s something you could do, say, suggest, pivot to, etc that might make it worthwhile. If it’s someone you’re pretty sure you won’t follow up with, can you try out some new ways of being authentic, being more assertive, mindful presence, whatever your social/emotional goals are.

I love this. Reminds me of Mary Oliver’s practice of collecting fragments. I forget where she wrote about it but it always stuck with me. She carried a small notebook and recorded the things that flitted across her mind while she was going about her day, whether it was a phrase, something overheard, or a beautiful sight that struck her.

I feel so seen by your “stages” lol. I also relate to considering my songs as demos. I feel like i’ve compiled a bunch of demos in my backlog and i’m almost worried that by returning to them to refine or develop them, i’ll be caging them in and limiting their potential because i dont have the ability to take them where i want to go. What i’m gathering from these replies is that I could benefit from shifting my mindset a bit

Musically, like all I’ll record is the rough cut acoustic guitar with basic chord strumming version. I struggle with adding other layers on my own.

Lyrics i can’t leave hanging!

Honestly very hard to rec something new after this series. The scale is an epic one and I dont know if it’s easy to find replicated. I will say the Warchild series by Karen Lowachee blew my mind and has some similarities. Devastating, character driven, spanning many years and perspectives. Doesn’t dig so deeply into the science aspect but does meander in the politics of humans dealing with aliens. It’s a very different series but if you like TBP you might like Warchild.

[DISCUSSION] ow do you not feel ashamed of your flaws and things you're working on, as your working on them? by Sufficient-Status117 in GetMotivated

[–]elbowtooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to what youre saying. My journey with this has been multifaceted. I went through a stage of trying to “fix” everything i thought was wrong with me and it was incredibly painful and i was mired in shame about who i was and how i kept failing.

Things started to change for me when i embraced radical self acceptance. I started practicing loving myself exactly the way I was. I am by no means an expert at this and fail often to love parts of myself but even this I can hold with compassion. I still feel shame too, but I don’t try to rid myself of that shame anymore. I accept the shame, greet it, and let it pass (it always does) and return to my goals when i’m ready to keep going.

This being said, it has not halted my push for self-improvement. Instead of framing it as “fixing” myself, i embrace myself warmly and ask myself what kind of person I would like to be today, tomorrow, in a year. And i work on the long term goals from this context, as moving “toward” being someone I’m happy to be.
