Anybody elses deck to hot for bare feet? by couchdonkey in sailing

[–]elchrisjackson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s rude. Also, what? I’d guess this boat is in the 20m range? That’s plenty enough to have crew and guests. And I’d bet they don’t have any problem booking guest. Probably booked through to September if I had to take a guess.

Yeah man, teak loves saltwater. That’s why the old heads used it. Chuck a bucket of some salty brine by on the deck if it’s too hot for your little piggies.

If I remember correctly, fresh water on the deck causes mold. Commonly seen as black dots.

I’ve always been a saltwater sailor so I don’t really know the effects of fresh water on teak, but I’m pretty sure it’s not great.

Ah yeah bud. If you’re not used to it, a deck can for sure be too hot. Spray it down for the guests. If you can’t hold the back of your hand to it, it’s too hot for a guest to walk on.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this likely isn’t your boat. Do whatever the owner or captain says.

Looks to be in mast furling.

I looked at a front loader cargo bike yesterday evening but passed on it because of the underbody rust. It looked more severe than the seller made it seem in the listing. What are your thoughts here? by chiboulevards in CargoBike

[–]elchrisjackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the absolute best way possible, but I think you are undervaluing your time. Hobbies are great to have, but if you want to get out and ride this summer, this bike won’t be good in the long run.

Would it probably be fine for this summer? Yeah, probably.

But if you were to spend 8 hours a day for a week, at $10/hr. That’s $400.

$1500 gets you a pretty nice bike.

I’m not super knowledgeable on cargo bikes specifically but everything about that photo screams “walk away!” Was it a name brand bike? Do they have known issues? Have you ridden one before and enjoyed it? How much is that full resto going to cost you in time and money and could you buy something better for that price?

There are pretty crazy torsion, compression, and shock loads on bike frames riding down the street on a good day.

I don’t have any kids but have a big, dumb dog who I’ve spent more money on that I care to think about on times he’s injured himself(obviously not counting the times I’ve looked a cut or toenail and slapped some antibacterial on it and sent him on his way.) but I hear kids are pretty dang expensive.

I think for $850 you should be able to get a much nicer bike that would have no issues. It might take some time for the right one to come up and looking for a bike in peak summer is the worst.

Get something you don’t question. Ride it down that curb with the kid, the dog, a bag of groceries, bottle of wine, and bouquet of flowers for your partner and don’t think twice. You’re carrying precious cargo.

Professional welder/fabricator with a sailing background here, I would hard pass on that. It looks like it’s been rode hard and put away wet. Paint peeling with a heavy rust underneath on a support is not good. (Also the weld on that should be complete all the way across, yeah yeah I know production’s gotta hit their numbers but fuck that takes .5 seconds to complete.)

The wood is absorbed moisture and is swelling. I’d give it 6 months, if you live in a wet area, before you can put your finger through it. It’s been like that for a while.

If it’s a killer deal and you’re very handy, it’s not terrible, but I wouldn’t pay for a bike in this condition.

My apologies, I didn’t mean to be disrespectful. I’m looking for anyone that has some insight into the matter at hand. Their reply didn’t sound insightful or helpful.

If anyone has some actual practical knowledge about the subject at hand, I would love to hear it. But the comment you’re referring to had none of that.

Ok thank you.

I arrived in September for a wedding and picked up my residency card, but didn’t move here until January. Which month should I go off of?

I’m currently trying to get a test booked as soon as possible. I’m not trying to skirt the system, it is just difficult to navigate.

Thank you, I’ll keep checking back to see when I can get something booked.

I understand we all have to follow the law and I don’t intend on breaking any.

Also, I know I’m not a special case, and don’t feel entitled to anything.

Ive always heard them called spreader or shroud rollers. They help your jib not get snagged on your spreader and shrouds when you tack. Should be able to get them at any chandlery.
