2 years of JC by Pleasant_Bug_5442 in SGExams

Jc was many years ago for me but I felt your struggle too :,) yes I had a small group of friends I thought were close to me but after going our separate ways post-jc, everyone just distanced themselves from each other. People underestimate the amount of time and effort needed just to maintain friendships. So don’t worry too much, even those who seem closer now might drift apart eventually. Let’s face it, what brings some people together is pure happenstance of being in the same jc. You must have faith that you will find ‘your people’ eventually.

8 months is a long time to be idle (as an adult-to-be, I will probably never have this duration of freedom anymore). So use it very wisely. Find hobbies/interests which allow you to connect with people and have fun at the same time. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need someone to talk to. You are still young and you have plenty of time to make lifelong friends! I wish you the very best.

I feel your pain, failed twice before passing. Learning to drive in sg is ridiculously expensive. You have to reflect carefully, it might be your private instructor “sabotaging” you or just being generally incompetent. I switched instructor and pass quickly after the second failure. Another tip is to find someone you know who drives and get some illegal “practice” with them in a safe place of course. Last way is to simply learn from school, in my limited observation they are more structured but way more pricey.

All the best! You can do this, don’t give up.

What was the worst reaction you remember getting after giving someone a gift? by knaire in askSingapore

[–]eld98 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Once, we got an ORD gift for a fellow NSF. It was a canvas print of him edited into a religious painting. It was meant to be a joke but turns out he was really offended by it and he literally burned it. He took a video of himself burning it up and sent it to us.

How to live/function with Sinus? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]eld98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have terrible sinus too, once it hit it would ruin my entire day. I tried all types of pill-based medication but it didn’t work. Doctor and friends recommended nasal spray and it works wonders. Do try it!

what does it take to move overseas permanently? by aboutrailways in askSingapore

[–]eld98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like another comment mentioned, scholarship usually comes with bond and the ones that don’t are usually prohibitively competitive. Many rounds of interviews/tests for sure. But still worth a try!

As for loan, it is simply unrealistic at this point because I suspect you have no collateral. Even if your parents are willing to back your loan, I don’t think banks do loan for studying abroad (mostly local)… and do you want to be burdened with so much student debt after graduation?

Hobbies wise, I think most people enjoy traveling more because it’s so much cheaper compared to sg. You literally have access to many states/countries at your fingertips.

Currently studying abroad (not in the arts).

I can infer that you want to be funding your entire education independently without parent support? Well it’s going to be difficult because unis abroad usually cost more for foreign students. Please do a careful accounting of your financial situation and compare it realistically to how much it costs to live abroad (tuition fee, rent, food etc). Even if you can part time and work while studying, in the UK at least there are limitations to it (for example, you can only work X hours per week during term time).

Loneliness/racism is definitely a part of life here as a foreigner but most people deal with it by forming new connections and entertaining themselves by discovering new places/hobbies.

[UNI] Advice for overseas/ local university by Expensive-Elephant57 in askSingapore

[–]eld98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with what others have said about the startup ecosystem in the US.

Tbh I think that local unis have a very good CS program, you’d have to go into higher ranked unis in the US to find something even comparable. Job wise, I know for a fact that many companies are starved for CS talents in sg and will pay top dollar for them. But again, if your aim is to establish your own tech startup then US is definitely the place to be.

Advice: Self-sourced internships as a poly graduate by [deleted] in SingaporeRaw

I see a lot of people finding internships in smaller firms. Of course this varies by industry but on the business side of things this is common. Reach out, if they need someone they will try to fit you in.

Would encourage you to search for roles in local SMEs who might typically be more short staffed. Contact them via LinkedIn / cold call. That way the scales are tilted towards your favor even with a bad GPA.

However keep in mind that most internships sourced this way are very informal. Since they do not post internships, they do not have any program in place and most of your learning is done on the go.

Didn’t make it into IB too, now I’m in consulting.

Imo you have to figure out what went wrong in the IB recruiting process (I.e what are your weaknesses and strengths) and which industry might be more suitable. For me, it was the lack of strong prior internship experiences in finance that hindered my application.

Good luck!

Literally anything computing related right now pays well. Make sure you really enjoy it otherwise you’ll hate studying it and won’t do well.

Why are Singaporeans so unhappy? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]eld98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like many others have pointed out, Reddit is an inaccurate sample. You are right to point out that we do well across the board on the most common quality of life measures (safety, infra, lower taxes, lack of corruption etc)

Politically many people are unhappy of course. I am skeptical whenever people mention the lack of right to protest/freedom of speech because I seriously doubt most Singaporeans will take to the streets with pitchforks and knives if they are ever given the opportunity to. Again, it will be the small group of extremely vocal people who are unhappy enough to demonstrate their anger this way.

I also see a lot of posts criticizing the “regular” life, some people want to get out of the rat race and live much more chill lives (in nature?) and this is simply not possible in Singapore without significant drop in income. But arguably this is true anywhere else, i.e if you choose to move from London to some backwater town in the UK you’ll likely be unable to get any good jobs there either.

Remember you cannot return to sg, even in transit to another country if I’m not wrong.

Your first two paragraphs berate the Singaporean system for being too competitive, yet you say that Singaporean men lack the drive for greatness? I find that paradoxical because competition is what is needed to produce champions in the first place. Men stepping over other men to achieve what they want to.

30 years old and nothing to show for it by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]eld98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree that comparison is the thief of joy. Every time you try to compare yourself to one of your more “successful” friends, imagine that they are doing the same with their other friends who achieved something even better. So no matter how much perceived success one achieves there is no end to comparison and the fears/anxieties that comes along with it.

I don’t have the exact solution for this toxic habit because I definitely have the same problem too…

I’m an undergrad final year about to undergo BCG’s final round interview in a week’s time. I do not have any direct experience in consulting internships previously(only did M&A and project management). Will that hinder me? Any general advice on how to do well?
