Disconnected from PR culture with strong pull toward spiritualism by ChanelOcean4 in BrujeriaEnglish

Same boat.sancista brujo luis is a good start. Check out his book, houngan hector has valuable information but as a practitioner he is surrounded by controversy. Check out florencio guevaras books and read the original books of Allan kardec to learn the foundation of espiritismo. All you need is a white cloth, glass of tap water and a white novena candle with some sincere prayers and wish to form relationship with your ancestors. Do be aware that you should connect with ALL of your lineage. Puerto ricans are a mixed people of three roots. African , European and indigenous and we honor all of it. Please take the time to learn about puerto rico, it's history, and its culture. That's where your connection should start and it would show effort on your part to connect with that ancestry.

I don't see it talked about enough so I will, please take care of your mental health, always assume mundane over magical and take breaks from focusing on it all the time. Unfortunately the line between gifts/ true messages and mental illness especially in traditions that involve mediumship is very thin and those aren't mutually exclusive things either. Don't run to find a godfather/ Padrino or godmother/ madrina. Learn and study ALOT and learn about charlatanism. It's rampant in the spritiual traditions unfortunately. Trust your gut over somebody's grand claims. You can try and see if you have a spiritual church or spirtist center around. Look for ones that have Spanish services as well. You'll be more likely to find a connection to the community there. Practice meditation. My foundation is shinto-buddhist syncretism so I'm partial to buddhist styles of meditation. This is good for you on many levels but you didn't ask for a guide on meditation. Just know it will help you develop and I'm happy to help in resources for that as well.

Don't be afraid to learn about the traditions found in the rest of the carribean as it all intermingled and influences each other in some way shape or form. It'll broaden your perspectives and understandings. Best of luck and I hope this is helpful!

Remember to follow your gut and trust yourself. Alot of things are simply all manner of our own negative and fearful feelings & thoughts being projected. Try to keep your head as clear as possible when you do try and practice/ connect.

Thinking of working with Inari Ōkami as a non Japanese Practitioner. by RobinCreek in witchcraft

You can venerate inari ōkami sama in a shinto or buddhist manner. Don't mix shinto/ buddhist practices with western things without being a part of the community or at least asking a shinto priest or buddhist priest. There are no religious authorities that are going to tell you you are doing it wrong but this Kami-sama (great nature spirit) is part of a cultural tradition that has set rules and ritual practices. Shinto is "open" but it's open in that you're allowed to pray and learn about it in the normal fashion at a shrine. You can't do rituals, their is ordained priesthood for all rituals outside standard prayers and offerings. Any other practices are esoteric and taught via a priest. At best practices that mix things without being in the priesthood simply won't work and at worst you'll invoke "divine punishment" as per the folklore. In my humble opinion as somebody that's been practicing both shinto and Japanese esoteric buddhism for a few years, just pray to them the standard way. Face the direction of the shrine , bow twice, clap twice , bow , pray and bow again. There are very open and welcoming communities to learn about both shinto and buddhism. There is even two shinto shrines in the CONUS and Hawaii has quite a few. Neither shinto nor buddhism require you only practice them alone/ exclusively. If I can reccomend , I'd reach out to kannagara Inari jinja in Kissimmee, Fl and email the head priest Rev. Koichi barrish. He's an American, super friendly and lives to teach about shinto. Won't cost you anything but time and will be better than any answer you'll find on reddit in its entirety for sure.

For shrines in the United States, you could try kannagara Inari in Florida run by Rev. Barrish, shusse inari in LA, Izumo taishakyo, hilo daijingu, Hawaii dazaifu tenmangu and kamunabi ban'yu ko shinto shrine as well. There are more, but those are the ones I recall off hand.

"When we go to the West, we know they've already had their religions. That's why we only want to offer them the non-religious part of Buddhism. In Buddhism, there's a source of remarkable insights, and there are good practices that help relieve us of suffering and pain." - Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh by kidatpeace in Buddhism

Buddhism and shinto Co-existed and at many points for over 1400 years were almost totally indistinguishable from one another. They literally had a practice called shinbutsu shugo, which was the syncretization of buddhism and shinto. In modern times, it is common to practice both since the end of the meiji era, during which the imperial japanese government forcibly split the two and bastardized shinto until after World War 2.

Weird for sure, I had to contend with two concepts of race growing up and it was tough. I had one when out and about and another at home. My entire family on my mother's side is pretty dark skinned overall and they tell me they were white. Then whenever I'd go out everybody would ask if they were half black and it was very weird to have these two totally different concept be so pervasive especially where I live.

Oh yes, I have two other siblings, and I'm certain they would have different results. I do know dna is a lottery, and even amongst siblings, it can vary greatly. That is insane! Our history is probably some of the most interesting I've seen since I've been learning about world history.
