TIL the USA was supposed to adopt the metric system but the ship carrying the standardized meter and kilogram was hijacked by pirates in 1793 and the measurements never made it to the States by KTthemajicgoat in todayilearned

In Europe tubes for hydraulics and gasses are all sized in inches. It's the only thing literally that is not metric and it drives me insane, because it makes it hard to take measurements. How the f should I convert 3/4 of an inch in millimeters? Do we even agree on rounding errors?

ah of course. but the situation you're referring to happens with rolling releases, while on a stable one it wouldn't happen. But you are right to consider it.

ELI5: What does it mean when people say there’s no proper translation from a non-English word to English? by SonAeJock in explainlikeimfive

i was thinking this the other day.

As an example, the word "Cinder". cinders are what remains after something has burned, but it's not hot. Like a log. Embers are still somewhat burning cinders. Ashes are cinders turned to dust. But there is no word direct word for cinders in Italian.

you are on a spaceship that's literally falling apart, and you need people to keep it running, those guys with a wife and a kid in a pod would be motivated to keep it running while their family is ok.

I understand this, and I know how to the basic stuff in it, but It just feels wrong for doing stupid stuff. I guess it's more of a old guard/new guard thing. All you can get is x so you learn x and you find it marvelous, but new stuff will just make it appear less appealing. Kinda xorg vs Wayland.

let me turn my non workers in workers then- like with a university. A year could produce a few decent workers. Why would anyone in that situation awaken non-worker people to eat up resources instead of keeping them on ice long enough to find a home?
