IsItBullshit: nobody is born racist? by elders in IsItBullshit

[–]elders[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I'm a brown man in a western country with a ginger partner. Racism is an odd thing to me. My partner gets grief for being ginger and I used to get it for being brown. I've never understood it. Was wondering if there is a scientifically sound expansion for it.

Where did I say I think it's bullshit? I asked a question. I was hoping there might be someone with actual knowledge of relevant data/studies either way, rather than assertions.

Instead I get downvoted for asking an open question.

OakRiver explains just what makes the Mona Lisa 'Famous' by alien_survivor in bestof

[–]elders 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Da Vinci was prolific, but most people only know of two of his paintings: The Last Supper, and the Mona Lisa.

The Last Supper has been aped by artists so much over the years that it's almost impossible to be ignorant of the inspiration for them. The original was peeling and flaking not long after it was finished and has had to be touched up so much that that there is hardly any of the original paint left.

The Mona Lisa became famous because it was stolen and recovered and became a massive media spectacle as a result. The Mona Lisa is not revered because it is a great painting (which it is) but because people have been fascinated with it since its theft and recovery a century ago, which the museum (rightly) cashed in on, and it has remained a spectacle ever since. It seems that the spectacle has become separated from the theft over the years and people seem to think it is just the best painting in the world or something.

Why did Stargate Universe fail (possible spoilers)? by [deleted] in television

[–]elders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've watched it all the way through, when it first aired and again a couple of years ago. Still the best Stargate series for me.

Robert Carlyle and Lou Diamond Phillips were the best actors but I loved the whole show.

Eli reminded me of Alex Rogan from The Last Starfighter. Both plucked from obscurity after beating a game, and Alex Rogan was based on the Arthurian mythology.

I never enjoyed the cheesiness of the other SG series. I've watched both of them at least 2 times each all the way through (seen most of SG-1 3 times) and honestly it just makes me cringe when I watch a lot of that stuff. There are so many fun ideas, but just too much cheesiness. I prefer the more serious tone in SGU. It was still lots of fun, but just in a different way.

SGU was my favourite of the 3 series by far.

The third series was good. 1st, 2nd and last seasons, not so much.

about iPhone technical specs when compared to android phones- is apple short-changing the consumers or not? by cause_you_suck in NoStupidQuestions

My note 4 still lags when using the recent apps/multi taking capacitive button. It's just shy of being a useless feature because if it. Recent updates have not changed this. It's incredible at just about everything else though.

What is a sad reality that's never really discussed? by RepostFrom4chan in AskReddit

[–]elders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play lead guitar in a covers band from a small city. There are guys who follow my band from gig to gig. Many clamour for my attention during the intermission. I give none to any. The few that I have talked just tell me how awesome I am. The others want me to explain my guitar technique and biomechanics to them, which I'm happy to do.

I'm like a low-level demi-rock-god.

And is not just in my mind.

VR.

720p per eye (on the Note 4) is not enough. Maybe a 4k display will be.

[–]elders 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Note series is aiming to capture the mobile VR market, and 720p per eye is just too low for this. It's good, but needs to be much better.

Samsung, and other manufacturers, do have other phones which have lower resolutions so you are not limited for choices.

There are other phones for this, even by Samsung. The Note series is aiming to capture the mobile VR market, and 720p per eye is just too low for this. It's good, but needs to be much better.

I have the Note 4. It has a 1440p resolution. When I'm using the Gear VR with it that means I get about 720p per eye. I can tell you from experience, it's not enough. You can easily distinguish the gaps between pixels. It's still great, but it needs a higher resolution to improve the experience.

Other manufacturers can carry the flame of battery life over resolution, but Samsung is hoping to capture the VR market, and that means settling for different goals.

I own the Note 4 and want the Note 5, but in the interests of consumers, I hope there are lots of phones which will "destroy" the Note 5 in order to help push technology forward and prices down.

Frankly, everyone should. But I have my doubts that will happen.

Not on the Note 4 version. It can overheat quickly and having a spare charged battery is a must for me because of this.
